Mountain Biking

Ben Brown's Bio

I've been mountain biking pretty steady for over twenty years. Fell in love with it during college at Virginia Tech and have done quite a few races over the years focusing mainly on XXC events including the Wilderness 101 and Stoopid 50 (twice each) and eleven straight Shenandoah Mountain 100 finishes. My kids are stealing the show now with more talent than I ever had. We love to travel around the country and find new dirt to roll. Still riding a lot of backcountry XC, with more enduro stuff too. Really having fun chasing my kids nowadays. We have checked off Whole Enchilada, Wasatch Crest, Fruita, DuPont SF, and a bunch of others.

Nice try but fatally flawed
1 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

After less than 3 months using this rack the thin metal box that is the tray cracked around the area closest to the front hook base due to the following forces:
- torque applied during the act of securing front wheel
- torque applied releasing front wheel
- driving down any road
- riding over rough pave, potholes, speedbumps etc

The bikes never liked to stay put no matter how carefully you tried to secure them. The inherent flexibility of the structure hooking the front tire causes metal fatigue and the wobbling you see at first gets steadily worse until failure. At this time replacement parts even if they become available will not solve the lack of engineering, so good luck.

Enduro worthy

Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

My fourteen year old son bought these for racing in the very competitive West Virginia Enduro Series. These shoes are paired with his Shimano SPDs and work great. Personally, I prefer the Kestrel BOAs myself, but these young rippers like laces. I’ve noticed that Five Ten has upped the quality and durability of their bike shoes over the past 4 years, guess Addidas has helped them there. Their shoes usually fit just true to size.

Still making the best looking Enduro lids on the market and even more comfortable than the A1. Love the features on this stylish helmet like the adjustable visor that uses nice anodized hardware to stay where you want it. Their gear is always stylish and well made. Their stuff stays tough and doesn’t get ratty.

Park Tool made changes to the FR5 without changing the part number. So when I migrated my drive train to Eagle 12 speed my trusty old cassette ring tool no longer works (the inside depth was too shallow for the new design and couldn't get purchase on the grooves). This particular version has a guide pin which greatly stabilizes and simplifies its use.

I've used both Shimano XT and XTR pedals over 20 years for Trail riding and XC racing. Finally getting into the rowdier sport of Enduro racing on a big big bike with lots of travel and now this pedal's huge platform makes total sense. They feel just like the others - but more stable, especially under my five ten Kestrels.
