Description

Why We Like The Vpd Air+ Tee

For riders who require maximum back protection without hindering their ability to move freely, look no further than the POC Vpd Air+ Tee. This trail essential features a lightweight and ventilated 3-layer back plate, which utilizes flexible mesh, to keep you rolling down the trail with serious protection that doesn't compromise mobility or breathable comfort. Sleeve and chest comfort pads further enhance flexibility while also absorbing harsh shock and chatter, and the perforated construction helps you stay cool by wicking sweat away from your skin. Silicone strips at the bottom of the elbows and hem provide a secure fit that won't ride up thanks to their grippy design.

  • Lightweight three-ply back protector with ventilated comfort
  • Three-layer back protector certified to 1621-12
  • Flexible mesh moves with you and wicks sweat from skin
  • Perforated design promotes cooling airflow
  • Low-profile chest and sleeve pads add comfort and compression
  • Front zip closure makes for easy on and off

With respect to other reviewers, I think this is a somewhat under-rated product. In summary, if you wanted to have poc's "Air"-level protection all-around + a beefier (eg "Air+") back, this is as close as you get. Comparing to the Spine 2 Jacket (vpd 2 back) and the VPD Tee (air back + air elbows).. VPD Tee (long sleeve version with no chest or shoulder protection) has an "Air" back, 3-layer thinner layers, ~360g, all perforated. VPD Air Tee (this one) has an "Air+" back, 3 thicker layers, ~550g, less perforations in the center. VPD Spine 2 jacket is an even beefier, VPD 2 back. Weirdly, the velcro piece for the cummerbund is there on this Air Tee, but it doesn't come in the package. Shoulders are certainly better fitting on the VPD Spine. Spine uses the vpd2 molded material, VPD Air Tee (this one) uses the same thing as air knee and elbows, eg a cut sheet (not molded). VPD Tee (long sleeve) has no shoulder protection. Chest plate here is a a single thicker layer, certainly less beefy (but also much lighter) than the chest on Spine 2. It's very wearable just-in-case. If the shoulders fit ok, this seems like it could work for a lot of people. I sent back the Spine 2, it is beautiful and not much more relatively speaking but too heavy duty for me. Long-sleeve VPD Tee is really a great XC thing, with light back, air elbows, and three huge stash pockets. I'll probably keep this Air Tee for DH in combination with separate air elbows, though will swap in the lighter back from the long-sleeve. Can confirm that there are no arm grippers, unfortunately.

Pointless. Buy the Spine 2.0 jacket

I have the VPD Spine 2.0 jacket, which I like. Tried this since I wanted something cooler. The 'tee' is completely redundant to the 2.0 jacket. Physically comparing both side by side: the material (not the pads) is identical on both. Zero difference. The tee's shoulder pads are not as nicely shaped as the 2.0, with a weird hump over the shoulder. The chest pad is one-piece here vs. three thinner layers on the 2.0. The latter is oddly much more flexible than what you get here. This tee does not come with the cummerbund thing that the 2.0 jacket does. Both have a superb closure system with the zipper. Fit in the L/XL size for me is great: 5'11", 185lbs, 43.5" chest. Shoulder pads are not removable here, back and chest panels are. VPD 2.0 jacket is the same. I do prefer the back panel here, which is three independent layers vs one giant VPD board on the 2.0. The only conceivable way this is cooler than the 2.0 is the slightly larger perforations in the back panel. That's it. And the tech features listed say it's level 1 protection, but the actual jacket says it's level 2 (back only). Which brings me to my final point: POC: your technical descriptions suck real bad. For example, which is it? Level 1 or 2? Your write-up for this 'tee' says it has silicone below the elbows to keep the sleeves in place, and refers to sleeve padding. This product obviously has neither BECAUSE IT IS A TEE. If you're going to ask a lot of money for your products, don't make people guess which features they actually have.

Well does the shoulder pad go over the shoulder? More specifically the AC joint?

Re whether shoulder goes over the ac joint, I would not rely on it. Better to think of those pads same as air knees and elbows. They’d cushion direct impact to the shoulder and a bit around it, more down the arm than up towards the neck.

Design Flaw

Unfortunately, the unremovable shoulder pads make this shirt a no go as far as I can tell. They are extremely uncomfortable unless you are the perfect size, ruining the prospect of rib and back protection for those unwilling to undergo the uncomfort. While it is possible that this would be reduced by breaking in and heat, I think the safety will be compromised by the time the vpd 'breaks in'.

Does this have shoulder protection? Shoulders look puffy in the picture but I can't tell. Thanks!
