Description

Ventral Air Spin Helmet

Drawing inspiration from both the Octal and Ventral, the POC Ventral Air Spin Helmet blends  superior ventilation with optimal aerodynamic performance, giving riders the best features of these two race-proven helmet designs. Factor in the advanced crash protection offered by the fully-wrapped unibody shell, a high-performance EPS foam liner, and the SPIN rotational impact system, and it's easy to see why the Swedish company has already won a prestigious Design and Innovation award for this new helmet.

The Ventral Air Spin features precise ventilation ports and internal channels to control air intake and release at both high and low speeds. This provides a supreme cooling effect over the entire head, making this an ideal helmet for long mountain climbs and riders who prefer a lightweight, highly-ventilated helmet. When it comes to aerodynamic performance, POC used CFD testing to ensure minimal air turbulence and reduced drag. According to their tests, at speeds below 25mph the Ventral Air is comparable to the Ventral in terms of reducing drag. At speeds above 25mph, the Ventral is more effective thanks to a more aero-focused design. That being said, the Ventral Air offers superior cooling to both the Ventral and the Octal, and also features a slimmer, more attractive profile than the Octal.

POC decided to upgrade the Ventral Air Spin's protective properties with their relatively new SPIN rotational impact protection system. This design minimizes the traumatic forces from crashing at an oblique angle by allowing the helmet to rotate independently around your head in the case of an angled crash. Spin pads placed inside the helmet are fixed in place, but exhibit a bit of movement, which gives the helmet a bit of shear in the case of a crash. These pads are made of a silicone-based material on the bottom for extra impact mitigation, lined with traditional foam on top for sweat-wicking comfort.

  • Lightweight helmet offering superior ventilation and protection
  • Innovative airflow design cools around the entire head
  • Helmet shape enhances aerodynamic profile and minimizes drag
  • Spin pads reduce rotational forces from an angled impact
  • Fully-wrapped unibody shell increases helmet safety & integrity

do NOT buy this helmet

This helmet is UNSAFE as the dial adjuster does not work properly. On my 2nd helmet. The 1st would loosen up 1-2 ratchets every 15 minutes. The 2nd won't even ratchet/click/lock as of the 2nd time out. And don't bother wasting your time with POC Customer "Service" as they will never return your call or email. I do want to highlight that CC Customer Service has been great.

    Bad Fit, Unhelpful Customer Service

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

Unfortunately cant recommend this helmet, while the helmet was a good fit based on the guidance CC provided, the helmet itself is just huge. Probably the bulkiest helmet I've ever owned, making it uncomfortable to ride it. Although its light, you can just tell its taking up so much room on your head that its awful to ride it.

I raised the issue with customer service and given I was outside the 30 day return window, they werent willing to offer me much. Frankly, I expected more when buying a $250 item especially given all the lip service CC gives to its customer service.

    Phenomenal helmet

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    This helmet is awesome. Period.
However, because it is awesome, it merits a little bit of discussion. At first glance, this helmet appears to be stylish (as road helmets go), yet not too over the top. POC’s helmets have a very distinct shape to them and this one is no exception. The helmet is relatively light as well compared to some helmets at a similar price point.

When first trying this on, it is good to note that POC has come through with several methods of adjustment. The helmet can be adjusted at the chin and with the rear dial as usual. The inner framework of the helmet can also be adjusted using the little holes that run front to back on the rear half of the helmet. I personally did not require a ton of finicking with the fit of the helmet and was pretty much able to just throw it on, adjust the rear dial and roll. On first try on, the helmet is very comfortable and feels like a pillow. I have an oval shaped head and feel like this helmet did very well for me. I usually wear a medium or large and I felt like this helmet fit true to size.

I used the black color of this helmet and coming from another helmet with a koroyd system in it, I was really looking for a helmet that excelled in ventilation. The Ventral Air Spin did not disappoint. I usually go for helmets in a white color to prevent overheating, but this entire summer, I found that even in a black color, I never felt like the heat was overbearing. In fact there were several times where I actually had to reach up and check to make sure the helmet was there because there was so much wind going through it. The padding held up really well during the time that I used it and I never felt like it was too little or too much. The chin strap had a nice cover on it as well that kept it from digging into my throat. The design of the chin strap also kept it at a reasonable position below the chin so that I didn’t have to constantly fiddle with it. That same design also kept it away from my ears comfortably.

Now onto the safety. While this is a road helmet by design (it could be used for XC mountain biking as well), I decided to take it mountain biking with me on a ride. I’m still glad that I did as I happened to have a really nice little digger that day when I wiped out around one of the corners on the track we were riding. I went straight to my shoulder and the whiplash made me hit my head pretty hard. I stood up really dazed from what had happened, thinking I for sure had a concussion. I pulled my helmet off and looked at it and saw that everything on it was completely intact. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that I did not get a concussion that day. Personally, I credit that to the Spin technology in this helmet. If you’re not familiar with Spin or MIPS technology, they are impact dispersion technologies that reduce the chances of getting a concussion from a crash on your helmet. POC created their proprietary Spin technology as answer to MIPS (used by many other companies). And for me, the answer is loud and clear, Spin is every bit as good as MIPS, if not better when it comes to impact dispersion.

If you’re considering buying this helmet, I couldn’t recommend one more strongly than the POC Ventral Air Spin. It’s a fantastic helmet that will do exactly what it’s been made for and maybe even more. This is by far the best helmet I’ve used to date. Hands down.

    POC Ventral Air Spin... AWESOME!!!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This helmet is the most comfortable helmet I have ever owned. The twist lock ratchet for snugging up the fit is awesome. I wore this helmet for Ironman, and not once did I need to adjust it, or push it back into place. Over the course of 6.5 hours, the helmet never left my head, and there were not pressure points causing discomfort or headaches. The air vents are HUGE, and provide the most air flow I have experienced short of not wearing a helmet. It is light weight, and I hardly know it is there. I'd buy another one of these in a heartbeat!!!

    Limited fit options

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small

I wanted the POC Ventral Air Spin but never saw a large to try on at any LBS. Finally, I ordered a large size, like my nicely fitted Bell Gage and other helmets. While the POC circumference was just barely adequate, the straps allow for no adjustment (i.e., lengthening) at the ear. I considered whether I could handle the straps as-is, for like two seconds, but I decided to return the helmet, as I knew that the straps would quickly become annoying. It's certainly too bad, as the helmet is stunning. But if you have a longer face, expect that you might have fit issues with the POC given the lack of any strap adjustability. PS: I contacted POC directly to confirm that it wasn't just operator error and that the straps are indeed designed with no adjustment at the ear.

I had sizing issues too. I wanted to go with medium because my Octal large ran way bigger than I wanted. It’s a bulbous looking helmet and the large sized looked huge. Interestingly, the POC Ventral Spin (non-raceday version) I ordered in Medium should have fit me in the upper range. It was too small on the head and straps. However, when I ordered the same helmet in the medium sized Raceday version it fit me perfectly. Weird right? I’m happy with the helmet. Another substantial feeling helmet from POC that performs well and is lightweight with less of the a bulbous look of the Octal.

The first POC did its job.....

I previously owned a POC Octal. Last year I was in a collision with an inattentive driver. My GPS stopped at 25 mph on impact. My head hit and demolished the drivers side steel mirror and roof pillar. The impact side of the helmet was cracked and one of the retention straps snapped. No concussion. When I ordered a replacement helmet there was no debate in my mind what brand I was going to go with.

I ordered the Ventral Air Spin as a replacement and it fit out of the box. I live in Phoenix and was very impressed with the Octals ventilation. The Ventral Air Spins ventilation is as good but this one seems to fit better. While I hope no one has to test the protective properties of any helmet I assure you a POC will do its job and do it well at the moment of truth.

Sizing. what head circumference is which size?

    Hi Linda,

If you click on the size chart, the circumference of your head is listed for this helmet, the Ventral Spin. So if you follow the Ventral Spin circumference measurements you should be able to find your size.

This one should be on your short list

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've been wearing the Kask Protone for about 5 years now and it has been my favorite helmet I've used, so this is the benchmark for me to compare the POC to. After 5 years it was time for a new helmet, and I wanted to try something different. I've had my eye on POC for quite some time and after some research the Ventral Spin Air was the one I ordered. I wanted a helmet that was aero, but it's so hot and humid where I live ventilation was key. This does both very well. It feels just as light as my Protone, but ventilation seems a bit better. The fit systems on both are pretty comparable, but I do miss the ECO chinstrap of the Protone. The only negative is the POC is slightly tighter on my head from my temples to my ears. I notice this when I am eating (chewing) at a rest stop, so I would say the fit runs smaller than my Protone. The Spin technology was another big reason I chose this helmet. You won't notice it when you're wearing it, but it's nice to know it's there. Looks are subjective, but I think this looks about as good as a cycling helmet can. I give both helmets a 9 out of 10. The fit of the Protone is slightly better for me, but the POC gets the nod for ventilation and safety.

    Top of the Line Protection

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

When MIPS came onto the scene, many were skeptical of it's claims and the increased price tag. Now, a few years down the road, most protection companies have adopted their technology into their lineup but only POC has improved upon it. SPIN offers a new level of rotational forces mitigation for repeated impacts, lessening the consequences of the big crash you'll hopefully never have.

The Ventral fits incredibly well, offering excellent ventilation and adjustment. The only downside for me and my large head is overall profile - it is not a small helmet. However, the safety benefits far outweigh the issues of vanity. I doubt I'll trust another brand with my brain for a long time.

    Sizing/Fit POC Ventral Air

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium and Large

I love my POC Octal. I wear a Medium and it's a perfect fit. Best ventilated helmet I've ever worn. Have had Medium in Specialized Prevails in the past for comparison. So, I ordered the Medium in the Ventral Air. It's not the same fit. It feels smaller front to back and sits a bit higher than the Octal. The straps are Not adjustable vertically despite what some have said and they sit on my ear lobes. They are too 'short'. I tried the Large and it is simply too big even with the retention system fully-tightened. The Medium will probably do but no telling how it will feel after wearing it for hours out on the bike. I did feel some minor 'pressure' that I have not felt with the Octal. Hard to pinpoint the reason for poor fit. Maybe the SPIN padding is a little bulkier or the design is simply different. Disappointed with POC but pleased with the service from Competitive Cyclist.

Great fit, comfortable and good airflow

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium

This is my first POC helmet, (I currently own several KASK helmets and used to use Giro Helmets). This helmet is a bit larger than the KASK (both sized medium in attached photos), but you don't feel the added weight at all. The helmet is very comfortable along the forehead area, unlike the KASK valegro and the rear ratchet system fits and works great. My only negative would be that does pinch your hair a bit if you have any kind of hair length. Oakley sunglasses fit inside the vent holes on this model without issue.

Great fit, comfortable and good airflow
