Octal X Spin Helmet

Serious cross-country racers are known to use roadie helmets while competing off-road since road helmets are generally lighter, more minimal, and offer better ventilation. POC realized this and decided to tweak its ever popular road helmet, the Octal, continuing with the features that make it so popular on the road but adding a little more coverage for the protection you need while buzzing, along doing your singletrack dance between the trees. The Octal X found its way into the lineup and proved itself worthy among those who shave their legs and care more about watts/kg than how big the gap is between the doubles. XC pilots can still get rowdy and go fast too though, and this model, the Octal X Spin Helmet, adds POC's patent pending rotational impact protection system.

Spin is designed to lessen the effects of certain impacts by reducing the amount of force transmitted to the head and brain. It uses an innovative and unique pad, sitting directly on your head, that can shear in any direction during an impact. In short, Spin pads allow the helmet to move relative to the head during certain falls, helping to reduce forces transmitted to the brain.

POCs proven aramid bridge technology adds structural integrity to the helmet and the Octal X Spin boasts extended coverage over the back of the head and at the temples, for added protection no matter what surface you're riding on. True to its dirt-focused intention, the Octal X's shell extends to cover more of the liner foam than the Octal, which improves overall durability against low hanging branches without sacrificing lightweight functionality. Large is too large. Medium is too small. I am a size L in every other brand of helmet. My measurement is around 60cm. In this brand/model, L is too large, with a ton of side-to-side movement. I returned it and ordered a size M, which "looked" a lot more normal but was too small front-to-back and the dial/strap came completely out when I tried to adjust to fit. Too bad, I was willing to shell out the bucks at full retail.

Awesome: ventilation, eye garage, fit, weight, comfort, and added safety features. Unlike some mips liners, the spin pads are not noticeable. Less awesome: the MTB-style straps that sit off the face. They’ve been a hassle with sunglasses, regardless of brand or whether you place them over or under the straps.

My head measured 58.5 and the medium is a good fit. Lighter than my Giro road helmet

Is it close to a tight fit? Room for more space? I’m hesitant since I am a size 59 since a medium fit too snug on the omne. Thanks

I typically have one good crash a year, and this years involved hitting my head. My trusty Giro did the job, and is now retired. My wife has a POC that she really loves and with the way hers fit my head, it felt more secure... so I sent Kaylee Rakowski an email on Monday and she upgraded my shipping so that I could have a fresh Helmet right away... lots of riding planned over the 4th of July weekend. It arrived and the fit is perfect... thanks for taking care of me!

Addendum: A couple of observations after 3 rides in moderately warm temperatures (80+ degrees) The helmet went unnoticed on my ride, which is a good thing, the fit is solid and there were no odd pressure points. Being bald, I wear a skull cap most of the time for sweat management and to keep my scalp from getting sunburned. With the larger vents, this really is important.

I had been wearing my road bike helmet for mtb, and finally decided to buy a proper mtb helmet, and I absolutely love it. I have a small head and it doesn't look too big at all. It fits great and I barely notice it on my head. I have a GIRO road helmet and am thinking about getting a POC after my experience with this helmet.
