Sure, dropper posts have been wowing riders in the mountain biking world for several years now, but we're tired of hearing about mountain bikers having all of the fun. Gravel riding and cyclocross require a massive amount of versatility in bike handling, so it's about time there's the versatility in the seatpost to match. And few fit the bill better than the PNW Components Pine CX 27.2 Dropper Seatpost. No longer will you be stuck in the saddle for long rough descents, or awkwardly trying to move behind your seat without getting caught on it, you'll be ready to take over the wild beyond with your new dropper post with a drop-bar specific remote.

This lever was designed with a slimmer profile that doesn't take up too much real estate on the bars, but a generous thumb paddle that makes it easy to stay in contact with the remote, making actuation second nature and hassle free. It is equipped with "spin-stop" technology to keep your saddle from having any side-to-side play, or ending up completely crooked after a crash. PNW achieves this with brass keys fitted to the stanchion that slide into a slotted lower, enabling adjustability top to bottom, but little to no left to right movement, insuring a secure and reliable ride. 3 Star Post, 2 Star CX Lever

I found this post decent but not spectacular. I really like the function of it on the right terrain - riding some steep doubletrack and hiking trails it was fantastic to get over the back of the saddle on a gravel bike.

However this post is on the heavy side for a dropper, adding a full pound to my bike. It worked well enough (see my complaints below on the CX remote) and construction quality is quite good. This dropper is quite simple internally and easily rebuildable, and that I greatly appreciated. Installing saddles is a bit annoying but no worse than many other posts and I didn't care for the position where the cable attaches, it got in the way of the seatpost clamp on my bike.

I really wanted to like the CX dropper lever on my gravel bike after a month of riding. But I don't. My biggest complaint was difficulty of getting clean cable routing - the position forces the housing to curl around to follow the bar contour which introduces a lot of cable drag. Then the inline barrel adjuster didn't want to hold the housing straight unless it was adjusted all the way in. I don't know what brand the included cable was, but my Park Tool cable cutter really didn't want to cut it cleanly and the cable end position behind the lever made it fussy to cut short enough to be unobtrusive. It was hard to get good tension on the cable before clamping without a third hand, and lastly, there was no grip to the lever blade so by thumb wanted to slip off on rough terrain. Oh, and you have to completely unwrap your bar tape for install.

The kit includes cable and housing, so everything you need for install. 3 stars for the post, 2 stars for the lever. I'll probably try a different brand next.

Completely changes fat biking

My Salsa Beargrease did not come with a dropper seatpost, as most fat bikes don't. However, being used to moving the seatpost down on my other mountain bikes for descents, descending switchbacks, and being able to return it to an ideal height for climbing, fat biking is way more fun. In loose powder I can drift around a turn with my foot which I couldn't do with the original seatpost. I've used this dropper in single degree temperatures without a problem. The seatpost diameter on my fat bike happened to be this CX size. In order to make the lever easier to use while wearing gloves inside my bar mitts I installed it with the PNW loam lever. It was super easy to install. The price was right to make an upgrade on this bike that I don't use all year. Being able to adjust the seatpost also allowed me to adjust the angle on my bad hip to pedal a 32 mile race much more comfortably than I had when I rode that distance on that bike before without the dropper post.
