Why We Like The Phoenix 29 Carbon Saint Mountain Bike

Erupting onto the scene in 2010 and quickly making a name for itself as one of the most renowned DH machines in the industry, the Pivot Phoenix took podiums by storm, on both sides of the equator. The bike combined ultra-capable geometry for charging harder and faster through the world's toughest DH courses, and now it's back once again, but with a bold new strategy — 29in wheels. The Pivot Phoenix 29 Carbon Saint Mountain Bike provides the wagon-wheel quick rolling power of 29ers, with the frame's leading edge geometry and carbon fiber for a steed that will stop at nothing (unless you want it to). It combines the deceivingly light carbon frame with Shimano's Saint components for a bomber feel that's burly enough for sheer rock walls, gap jumps, and massive drops to flat, thanks in part to Pivot's proprietary molding technology.

With its lofty wheels, the Phoenix 29 aims to rise above its predecessor, with more speed, and improved performance over previous iterations. It came as a brain child of Pivot's designers and its Factory Race Team, who flexed their noggins together to craft a downhill rig that had previously only been constructed in dreams. It packs in all new geometry, suspension design, and a new chassis in order to boost the speed capabilities and stability for roosting down World Cup DH courses. Unlike the linkage of the 27.5 Phoenix, the 29er boasts lower linkage suspension design, which not only lowers the center of gravity for stability, but also frees up some space for both coil and air shocks, so you can fine tune your ride to your preferences.

The Phoenix 29 Carbon features a full-carbon frameset with Pivot's own take on the DW-Link suspension. DW-Link describes an adaptive travel path that balances the suspension to eliminate bob and provide a consistent pedaling platform, even while climbing. Similar to other popular designs in its ability to balance chain-pull and downward pedal stroke, DW-Link takes things a step further with anti-squat functionality that reduces bottom bracket sag and allows Pivot to lower the bottom bracket placement and slacken the head tube angle. This translates to a lower overall center of gravity, which in real-world terms means better cornering stability and overall handling precision across even the hairiest lines.

Pivot pairs this tech with a FOX Float X2 rear shock for a smooth, powerful ride that hugs the trail through every turn. The new design for the 29in Phoenix moves the linkage lower, and more compact to pack in a whopping 190mm of travel in the rear, increasing stiffness and lowering the center of gravity. In layman terms this means you can tackle the course with confidence that every bit of power you expend while climbing is bringing you one pedal stroke closer to dropping in. Up front, a Fox Factory 40 GRIP2 fork boasts a whopping 203mm of travel to keep your front wheel solidly planted on the ground and smooth out even the roughest of rock gutters. Molded rubber downtube and swingarm protectors help reduce vibrations and protect your frame from the inevitable bumps you'll encounter out in the dirt.

The Pivot Phoenix 29 Carbon Saint Complete Mountain Bike features exceptionally durable Enduro Max cartridge bearings throughout the build to keep everything moving smoothly no matter how many miles you ride. Shimano's gravity-specific Saint components drive the Phoenix forward, top-end components to provide bombproof durability that you know you can rely on when the going gets a bit hairy. A Pivot cockpit keeps you firmly in control, and a set of DT Swiss hoops that roll smooth and tough as you send the gnarliest of trails. This bike was built to shred with the best, so get out and get after it. Plus, the hassle-free, full-length, internal cable routing with Pivot's exclusive cable port system keeps things neat and tidy.

*Due to unprecedented demand in the global supply chain and the bike industry over the last 18 months, material weight and exact components are subject to change.
