Just when you thought the Mach 429SL was as perfectly dialed as it could possibly be, the engineers at Pivot managed to make it even better. 2017 sees Pivot's flagship XC 29er back in action with the same much-loved geometry as its predecessor and the addition of a boost rear axle for even more stiffness out back. Those few extra millimeters only amplify the 429SL Carbon XT/XTR Pro Complete Mountain Bike's ability to scamper up steep climbs and shred along with much bigger travel sleds on the drops. Finished off with a mix of Shimano's XT and XTR componentry, this bike is roaring for you to zip tie on a number plate and toe the line. As an added bonus, boost spacing opens up clearance for 27.5+ wheels should you want to bump up the volume for off-season adventuring.
As with its predecessors, the Mach 429SL enjoys a svelte, race-worthy weight thanks to Pivot's proprietary hollow-core, internal-mandrel technology—the same process that was employed for the original 429 Carbon. Pivot did scrutinize the 429 layup, though, refining both the structure and the composite materials used. As a result of those efforts, the podium-hungry Mach 429SL Carbon is one of the lightest full-suspension frames Pivot has ever made, and it doesn't involve any sacrifices to stiffness or ride quality.
The Mach 429SL Carbon features a proven DW-link suspension design, which yields 100mm of smooth travel while also counteracting speed-robbing bob forces. This translates to consistent contact with the trail and snappy, responsive acceleration. Stand up and stomp on the pedals and you’ll be amazed at the grip you get on loose dirt. Pivot worked closely with FOX on the Float DPS Kashima Factory shock tune, so the 429SL's suspension and shock combine to provide travel that’s responsive, predictable, and uses every available millimeter. As with prior iterations of the Mach 429, you’ll feel like you’re riding a bike with much more travel.
Full-length internal cable routing—including internal routing for a dropper post—keeps everything tidy and quiet with sleek, clean lines. This frame can be paired with a 100mm fork for pure XC speed, but here it’s presented with a FOX 34 Factory 29in Kashima Boost fork for increased versatility and confidence on rough trails. The longer fork slackens the ride a bit, but with DW-link suspension in back, the Mach 429SL rides high in its travel, so you won’t experience any front-end wavering on climbs.
