Accelerate.

For 2017, Pivot carries over the much-loved geometry of its Mach 429SL Carbon Mountain Bike Frame and adds a Boost rear axle for a bump of stiff responsiveness. Boost brings the axle from 142 to 148mm, and those extra six millimeters of width serve to amplify the Mach 429SL's ability to both spring up climbs and drop in with much bigger travel rigs. It also opens up clearance for compatibility with both 29in and 27.5+ wheels so you can choose a wheelset to best meet your ride style.

As with its predecessors, the Mach 429SL enjoys a svelte, race-worthy weight thanks to Pivot's proprietary hollow-core, internal-mandrel technology—the same process that was employed for the original 429 Carbon. Pivot did scrutinize the 429 layup, though, refining both the structure and the composite materials used. As a result of those efforts, the podium-hungry Mach 429SL Carbon is one of the lightest full-suspension frames Pivot has ever made, and it doesn't involve any sacrifices to stiffness or ride quality.

The Mach 429SL Carbon features a proven dw-link suspension design, which yields 100mm of smooth travel while also counteracting speed-robbing bob forces. This translates to consistent contact with the trail and snappy, responsive acceleration. Stand up and stomp on the pedals and you’ll be amazed at the grip you get on loose dirt. Pivot worked closely with FOX on the Float DPS Kashima shock tune, so the 429SL's suspension and shock combine to provide travel that’s responsive, predictable, and uses every available millimeter. As with prior iterations of the Mach 429, you’ll feel like you’re riding a bike with much more travel.

Full-length internal cable routing—including internal routing for a dropper post—keeps everything tidy and quiet with sleek, clean lines. Pivot pairs its 429SL builds with a 120mm fork, and the frame can be paired with forks down to 100mm in travel to dial in on pure XC speed.

  • A versatile, race-ready XC 29er
  • 100mm of responsive dw-link suspension
  • Moderate geometry for XC speed and rowdy trail sessions
  • Pivot's carbon construction targets weight and stiffness
  • Boost axle widths increase stiffness for a snappy ride
  • Internal cable routing provides tidy, clean lines

Don't buy this bike!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

[Unless you like to go fast!] If going faster and having more fun is your goal, then this bike might be for you.
I purchased this frame as a complete bike in a 27.5+ configuration. The front fork is a Fox factory 34-Fit4 120mm travel, i9 wheels 27.5+ boost. RaceFace dropper post, SRAM X01 eagle drivetrain and Level TLM brakes. An Ergon carbon Pro saddle and Deity carbon bar with a Renthal 50mm stem round out the cockpit.
The best way I can describe the performance of this bike is: That it fits in between a hardcore XC and a trail bike. The handling is super tight, and the bike works very well in tight turns. It pedals like a hardtail and rolls really well. Climbing is as good as any, and better than most I suspect. I also found it to be quite good on descents, though a bit twitchy due to the very quick steering. Once I gained a bit of courage, I realized that I could go faster through any turn than I ever have before. Many reviews have stated that the suspension feels like it has more than 100mm [R] and I have to agree.
There is not much that I can find wrong with the Pivot Mach 429SL, keeping in mind that I am not really qualified to review it's performance beyond my capabilities. And this bike is way beyond my capabilities. I just wanted certain characteristics from my bike, and this one delivers.... A great trail bike that is fun to ride and can be raced competitively on our tight, challenging trails.
