While you may be tempted to just stare at the Mach 4's swooping top tube and elegant striping, the magic in this machine far surpasses its aesthetics. The 2018 Pivot Mach 4 Carbon V2 Mountain Bike Frame leaves just as big of an impression on the trail, with its 115mm of DW-Link suspension, lightweight carbon fiber, and XC ready geometry, that's just as apt to tackle all-mountain trails. Better yet, the Mach 4 lands its self with the lowest standover clearance you'll find on a 27.5-inch wheel bike, allowing it to accommodate riders of nearly any height with ease, allowing for everyone to power up hills and conquer mountains. The V2 doesn't fall short from the Mach 4 tree, so to speak, and sticks to the geometry that we love, but — ahem, boosts its self into modern standards so it can remain future-proof for the time being.
The Mach 4 Carbon V2 stays true to its roots, keeping the geometry nearly identical to its most recent predecessor. That isn't to say it remains unchanged though, making space for bigger tires and more versatility, the Mach 4 was boost-ified in the rear, stretching the rear axle out to 148mm for a stiffer, more responsive wheel, up to date with new hub standards, and allowing for the clearance needed for running up to a 2.6-inch tire. The bigger space, and wider tire, means you can run lower PSI in the large volume, keeping traction locked to the ground through loose and wily corners, and giving you just a little bit more squish when you roll into rock gardens that buck you a little bit more wild than you were expecting.
Hard corners and off-camber landings don't have to sketch you out on this XC machine—its built to be stiff and hold up to it all. It may come in as a lightweight, weighing in at only 5.1lb, but its meticulous carbon layup doesn't compromise on stiffness. With hollow-core technology, and high modulus carbon fiber, the frame achieves its vibration-damping stiffness with vigor, showing its prowess through tough terrain, tracking lines with deliberate accuracy. Pivot's carbon fiber is among the top available, using an internal molding bladder that presses against the CNC machined mold to eliminate resin pools, leaving the inside of the frame nearly spotless, plus the front and rear triangle are both molded as one piece, meaning there's no excess material tossed on as an afterthought to piece the frame together. The results is an incredibly light and stiff frame that's so confidence inspiring that it's backed by a whopping 10-year warranty.
Suspension duties for the Mach 4 Carbon are handled by the proven DW-link design, which yields 115mm of smooth travel while counteracting speed-robbing pedaling forces. This translates to race-worthy acceleration and consistent contact with the trail. Stand up and stomp on the pedals and you’ll be amazed at the grip you get on loose dirt. Because Pivot worked closely with FOX on the FLOAT DPS Kashima shock tune, your suspension and shock will combine to provide travel that’s responsive, predictable, and uses every available millimeter without feeling like you're constantly bottoming out. As with prior iterations of the legendary Mach 4, you’ll feel like you’re riding a bike with more travel.
To keep everything tidy and quiet, the Mach 4 carbon comes with full-length internal cable routing, including internal routing for a dropper post. This frame can be paired with a 100mm fork for pure XC speed, but it’s also at home with a 120mm fork for increased confidence on rough trails. The longer fork will slacken the ride a bit, but with DW-link suspension in back, the Mach 4 Carbon rides high in its travel, so you won’t experience any front-end wandering.
