Prepared for anything.
Borrowing from its top-tier mountain shoe, Pearl Izumi created the X-Project 2.0 Women's Shoe to offer a slightly more wallet-friendly option for the self-sponsored rider, which features the same carbon sole as its pricier sibling and requiring few sacrifices for its more palatable price. Aimed at riders who need light, responsive shoes with a tread that won't leave them struggling through run-ups and barrier hopping, the X-Project 2.0 makes a worthwhile 'cross or XC investment.
Pearl Izumi starts with a synthetic upper that achieves its streamlined, contoured fit with the use of heat-bonded seaming rather than traditional stitched seams. This translates to a breathable and flexible upper that's far less likely to create hot spots or pressure points. The bi-directional closure system gathers equally from each side, further contributing to the shoes' tailored fit and allowing you to dial in the precise fit that will work for you without ending up with numb feet halfway through a race.
Within the shoe, Pearl Izumi's 1:1 Insole System provides arch support specified to the left and right foot, while an EVA foam heel — borrowed from softer, springier running shoe technology — helps absorb impact when you're forced off the bike to run through a challenging, rock-laced section of trail.
Underneath the shoe, the power transfer you count on in a race is delivered via a full-length tapered carbon fiber plate, which manages to dutifully deliver watts to the pedals while remaining forgiving enough for you to hike or run with. The rugged outsole, built with durable rubber tips on hollow TPU lugs, adds significant traction but very little weight to the shoe all-together.
- Off-road cycling shoes for CX and XC
- Carbon stiffness underfoot keeps pedaling efficient
- Hollow lugs save weight while adding traction
- Upper with heat-sealed seams reduces potential irritation
- Center-mounted dial wraps the foot rather than pulling across it
- Strap on forefoot for dialing metatarsal fit

- Fit: True to size

I have ridden these for about 2-3 months now and have really liked them! Looking to maybe even buy a 2nd pair. I love that they hug my heel so that there's no sliding of my heel when running or walking w/ the bike. I also like the boa on top because my other mtb shoes have a side ratchet and during cyclocross season, the ratchet would come loose w/ dismounts. With the boa on top of the shoe, this does not happen. So stoked on that feature.
Love the way the shoe fits! It's hard for me to take them off because my foot is seated so well in the shoe, which I love--like I said, no sliding around in the heel. I was getting foot cramps in my other shoe pair, but with these, I have inserted the arch support and find it fits much better.
Wear and tear has been really good so far. The shoe is sturdy and takes a beating with the 20-65 mile mtb/gravel races I've done on them so far.
For a lower budget shoe, this one rocks! Would buy them again.
- Fit: Runs small
The shoes are beautiful and come with a lot of "size tuning" features such as a thicker insole and extra arch support. They do run small and are not consistent in sizing to less expensive Pearl Izumi cycling shoes.
Hi! what is the difference between this shoe and the X-Project 1.0?
Hey Christina - The X-Project 1.0 is the top of the line in Pearl Izumi's line up and designed for XC or cyclocross racers. The 1.0 has two BOA dials for more adjustment in the fit (meaning no numb feet) and the upper is made of 0.9mm Second Skin synthetic which is supposedly the thinnest material out there. This X-Project 2.0 is a parred down version of the 1.0 in a women's specific model. I am an avid mountain biker so Feel free to contact me directly with any additional questions.
