Go low.

While we appreciate substantial gloves with palm padding on gravel epics and trail outings, our criteria for gloves on race day are quite different. We want minimal interference between hands and hoods, we want low-profile uppers, and we want as few additional grams as possible. Pearl Izumi's PRO Aero Gloves deliver.

They're made to keep your grip confident and secure during the hot races of late summer, omitting any palm padding and opting instead for a synthetic leather palm to ensure sweaty hands don't send you sliding off the hoods. They're finished with a bit of aerodynamic texturing on the back of the hand, which Pearl claims reduces drag. While we lack the wind tunnel facilities to vet that claim, we do know that being glued to the drops during frantic finales definitely increases our chances of placing, and the low-profile wrist certainly looks the part of a racer's mitts.

  • Race gloves for the hot days of summer competition
  • Unpadded palm provides perfect purchase in the drops
  • Low-profile, slip-on body uppers reduce opportunities for drag
  • Breathable material expels moisture into the summer air
  • Soft wiping surface keeps sweat off your brow, too

Needed a glove without padding

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: medium

Poorly placed palm padding causes numbness in my hands, Every time i find a glove with pads that fit my hand they discontinue or change it. Tried no gloves and had no numbness, but lots of sweat. This glove was a trial. Bought medium as usually wear medium in PI, but fit too tight at base of fingers so sized up to large. Very comfortable now, not constricting my fingers.
1. No pads, no numbness but still have protection if touch the pavement
2. Good road feel, good bar grip with no slipping and no sticking.
2. I like the absence of velcro -- no snagging. A bit harder to get off, but not dramatically -- well worth it to not have velcro.
3. Very sleek, very light, but i would like more color choices such as white for the heat.
4. After 10 or so rides and post-ride hand washing they are holding up quite well, but time will tell. I have Castelli Corso Pave pull-ons and they started to tear between the thumb and forefinger after just a few on and offs.

1. Thumb wipe exists, but it is 'aero' as well, i.e. it is not as plush as on other PI gloves. Harder to clean that part as well.
2. Limited colors. What about white and silver PI?
3. Cuff is fairly high, past the wrist versus all my other gloves

Summary: Pros outweigh the cons as lack of hand numbness trumps all the cons. I use this almost exclusively now. If i was to redesign i would enhance the thumb wipe, shorten the cuff rise, loosen the junction of fingers/hand junction, offer white/silver, white/red type color options. That would be a perfect glove.

Pretty cool

I usually don't wear gloves but thought I'd give aero gloves a try. Next best thing to riding without gloves. The thin palm material makes my hands feel close to the bars. Like another reviewer noted, it has a tight fit. It takes a little time to remove them especially with sweaty hands. Hopefully they'll hold up for a long time.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

My favorite summer gloves.

1. Aerodynamic. Good looking. Great price.
2. No pads. Many experienced cyclists prefer gloves without pads because they provide better bar feel, grip, and control. Also, no pads = more comfort because there are no pressure points caused by the pads. You don't need pads in your gloves if you have cork/gel tape on your bars.
3. No velcro. So they don't snag your expensive jersey. And you can throw them in the wash with your other kit after your ride. So convenient.
4. Sweat wipe on glove.
5. Very high QC standards from Pearl. These won't split apart on you after three rides.

1. A little hard to get off because of no Velcro. But it's worth it for the convenience of being able to throw them into the wash.

Sizing: Pearl Izumi gloves usually fit true to size. For example (for me): Pearl Izumi = L. Spesh = L. Giro = XL. Castelli = XL.

Nice review. Agree completely. Great glove. Smokin deal on sale!
