Protection for all but winter's worst.

The way we see it, there are three tiers of cold-weather gloves that any year-round cycling wardrobe has to meet. The classic knit glove is the first piece of cold-weather kit we put on in fall and the last we take off in spring. The heavyweight lobster glove is the kingpin of winter cycling, keeping your fingers warm through the worst conditions. In between these two extremes lies the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Softshell Lite Glove, which thrives in temperatures ranging from the high-30s to the mid-50s, providing enough insulation and wind-resistance to keep the cold out without causing us to overheat and get all clammy with sweat.

The back of the gloves are comprised of P.R.O. Softshell fabric, a wind- and water-resistant material that also insulates and wicks. It keeps your hands warm and dry, but without the extra insulation from the regular P.R.O. Softshell Glove. Pearl Izumi uses soft, durable Clarino synthetic leather on the palms, and the index fingers and thumbs are tipped with a bit of the same material, with added grip to make them touchscreen compatible.

Before you worry that winter gloves signify a total loss in dexterity, we'll remind you that Pearl uses its 1:1 glove fit and palm construction on the P.R.O. Softshell Lite, so you'll enjoy freedom of movement with no restriction between the thumb and forefinger while your hands are on the hoods. The wrist cuff is exaggerated to keep nasty cold drafts out, and a soft bit of windproof fleece on the thumb lets you wipe undesirable matter off your face before you stop into the coffee shop post-ride. Finally, a wealth of reflective elements help keep you visible to motorists in the often dim conditions that characterize winter riding.

  • Midweight glove takes the sting out of cold rides
  • Softshell fabric blocks wind and rain while insulating
  • Fabric continuously wicks moisture while you ride
  • Slim fit won't restrict control of the cockpit
  • Grippy palms preserve dexterity while shifting and braking

comfortable and warm

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

As usual with this brand, I'm impressed with this Pearl Izumi product, especially considering its price. Of course, temperature ranges vary from person to person, but I like these gloves in the high 30's to high 40's.

I really appreciate the soft material on the thumb which feels good wiping my gross, snotty nose on cold rides. Another nice feature is the ability to use my phone with the gloves on, and I can even text decently thanks to the touchscreen compatibility and dexterity afforded by these gloves.

If you've got really long pointer fingers, consider sizing up. Pointer finger length is never an issue for me in gloves, but with these they feel just a tad short, but not enough to bother me.

Warmer Than Expected

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

These gloves are relatively thin and fit true to size. Because of the thinness I was worried about how warm they would be but they actually performed better then expected. I've gone on three mountain bike rides with them where the temperature was anywhere from 38-45 degrees and they kept my hands harm for the entire ride. Now I wasn't going very fast so results on a road bike may be different. An unexpected bonus is that the smartphone touch integration is the best that I've ever found on a glove. It works perfectly even with the iPhone 7 digital home button.
