Escape comfortably.

For what seemed like an eternity, bib shorts were designed specifically for men, with little thought put into them that would accommodate feminine anatomy, and instead restrict our movement, and add obstacles to our ride. Over time, though, we've seen progression in construction, and design with women in mind that push bibs into our favorite category of cycling attire. The Pearl Izumi PRO Escape Bib Shorts for Women capture this transition perfectly, targeting our anatomy just as we need it with a clip right below the sternum, and an open lower back for breaks when mother nature calls, so we can finally experience all of the plusses we've been hearing about bibs for so long, without the negative draw backs we'd experienced in the past.

While you're sitting in the saddle, the soft nylon/elastane main body on the PRO Escape closely follows your leg movements as you stand on climbs and tuck during descents while continuously pulling moisture away from your skin. Silicone leg grippers keep the ends of the eight-inch legs in place, while breathable mesh bib straps disappear under jerseys. Pearl Izumi also includes a drop-tail design on the rear bib strap, which allows you to detach the shorts for blissfully simple mid-ride nature breaks, dispelling a main source of worry when switching to bibs.

Lining the shorts, Pearl's P.R.O. Escape 1:1 Chamois features a plush blend of variable-density cushioning in a strategic topography, and the malleable, four-way stretch next-to-skin layer wards off chafing to ensure your skin can breathe on long, warm rides.

  • Cycling bibs with key features for women who ride
  • PRO Transfer fabric manages moisture and stretches
  • Unique drop-tail open design for nature breaks
  • Center bib clip allows for comfortable strap position
  • Raw edge hems enhance comfort and reduce chaffing
  • PRO Escape 1:1 chamois supports sit bones and is soft
  • Silicone leg grippers lock hems in place without constricting

Great all-day basic black bibs

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

I’ve worn women’s bibs for close to a decade, everything from entry-level to half-a-mortgage-payment luxury brands. These stack up well to high-end offerings.

The material is different than any other shorts I have worn; when I took them out of the packaging, I was worried they were going to be too big. Once on, however, I understood: the compressive fabric doesn’t have as much stretch as thinner Lycras, giving the bibs a smoothing and supportive feel with less bunching around the hips. They are a little shorter inseam, which I appreciate, and the leg grippers are snug enough to stay put without restricting or causing a “sausage” effect (this is a big deal for me; I come from a track sprinter background with the quads to prove it). The bib straps are soft and the right length; the clasp in front stays put reasonably well but can have a tendency to migrate left or right.

The factors keeping this from a 5-Star review are the lower cut in front; I prefer a bib to come up to mid-torso, but these stop below my navel and can cause a little belly pooch. I have also found that the chamois is about 1/2” too narrow at my sit bones, causing a seam to rub me. I don’t have an especially wide pelvis and I ride a men’s saddle, so that was a surprise; I’m used to chamoises having too much hanging over rather than not enough.

Overall, a solid performer that I would recommend to new riders looking for a good wardrobe staple and experienced riders who need a solid everyday black bib.
