Quest Barrier Convertible Jacket

The Quest Barrier Convertible Jacket from Pearl Izumi is one of the most versatile jackets in its lineup as it offers water and wind-resistant protection as well as a thermo-regulating vest for your core on cooler, windy days and descents. The beauty of this top is its ability to convert from a protective shell to a heat-retaining vest in a matter of seconds with its zip-off sleeves, before or during your ride, that extends its use year round. Like its other Barrier products, the shell shields you from the wind, while repelling precipitation and road spray.

To increase its visibility after dark, the convertible jacket features BioViz reflective elements for safe riding at dawn and dusk. Underneath its full-length zipper is a draft flap to block wind from weaseling its way in and giving you a chill. Other key features include elastic at the hem and sleeves for a dialed fit, as well as zippered hand and one rear pocket for holding riding accessories or other items.

Nice windbreaker!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I am just getting back into bicycle riding after a 20+ year absence. My typical ride is ten miles in about an hour. This jacket is a great windbreaker for cool fall mornings. I'll wear wool underneath on chiller mornings, and whatever if the weather is warmer. Fit is snug, but comfortable. This would be the first jacket to use as Fall sets in, and the last jacket before Summer temperatures makes an appearance. A windbreaker, no padding.

Feature packed barrier jacket

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Pearl Izumi's Quest Barrier Convertible Jacket is an updated version of their old ELITE Escape Barrier Convertible Jacket, but with even more features and design tweaks. The feature set of this jacket at this price point is outstanding, to say the least. First and foremost this converts from a jacket to a vest very quickly. Having the ability to go between the two is great for changing weather conditions. Start a ride on a crisp spring morning, but know it's gonna warm up a fair bit by the end of your ride? This jacket/vest is for you. On the back there's a zippered back pocket, and on the front there are two front pockets as well. These front pockets are an addition that the old ELITE Escape Barrier Jacket did not have. They can be used to hold stuff-- or they can just be opened to allow some air in to let you vent and stay the right temperature. You can also do this by unzipping the jacket up from the bottom via the two-way zipper. The top half of the vest on the back is a mesh material, to help you breath under the windbreak material. Breathability is often lacking on windbreaker style jackets, but not here. Sizing is about what I'd expect from a relaxed-fit item in Pearl Izumi's catalog. I wear a Medium in their standard or relaxed fit jerseys, and usually bump up to a Large in their Standard fit jackets to have room to layer. I stuck with a Medium in this jacket, however, due to the relaxed fit. I didn't want this vest and jacket to be too big on me, and with the relaxed fit the medium gives me enough room. My ONLY complaint is the neck opening. I mentioned elsewhere on another review that I have a bit of a thick neck, but this neck opening is ridiculously small. In the previous ELITE Escape Barrier Jacket (standard fit, large), I had no problem zipping the jacket up all the way. When I was trying this jacket, I bought both a medium and a large. While I could zip the jacket up all the way on the large, it was TIGHT-- tighter than the large of the ELITE, while this jacket is relaxed and should be looser. I'd have had to bump to an XL to get a good neck fit- which is ridiculous and not something I was going to do. The Medium fits me fine elsewhere, so I'll just deal with not zipping the jacket up that last inch or so. I truly don't know what Pearl was thinking here about the neck. It makes no sense when comparing against other jackets in their lineup, both standard and relaxed, in both medium and large sizes. This neck is clearly 1 size smaller than the rest of the jacket. Period. At the end of the day I'm not gonna knock the jacket a star for the neck, as I think everything else about it makes up for this one issue, and I personally have no issue leaving it slightly unzipped. But PI... c'mon!

Quest Barrier Convertible Jacket!

Size Bought:
Large
Height:
5' 8"
Weight:
160

Purchased a PEARL IZUMI Quest Barrier Convertible Jacket to use on my gravel bike for cool or windy days. The jacket fits well and to size. I am 5' 8" and usually wear a large. Jacket is very light. My only complaint would be the elastic used in the wrist is a big snug so if you are wearing a watch or anything else on your wrists it may require a bit of a tug to pull the jacket off otherwise no complaints.
