Description

Elite Escape AmFib Cycling Bib Tight

You need some real deal cycling gear if you have any hope of remaining motivated to ride during the coldest winter months. Pearl Izumi made the ultra-toasty AmFib Men's Cycling Bib Tights that are designed to fit, wick, and breathe well keeping you warm and comfortable and never regretting your clothing choice. The Amfib bib tights have all the warmth you need to turn frigid training rides into enjoyable outdoor outings.

The AmFib bibs are the warmest tights on offer from Pearl and is made from a blend of Pearl's Elite AmFib softshell and Elite Thermal Fleece fabrics. Thermal Fleece, which makes up the back panel construction, handles thermo-regulation and moisture-wicking, while the Amfib softshell is incorporated in key areas to keep out precipitation and wind. The two fabrics coordinate effectively they will be your go-to tights in the coldest conditions.

Sub-freezing riding conditions are hard enough that we don't want any additional unnecessary discomforts, so thankfully Pearl Izumi integrates its Elite Escape 1:1 chamois into the AmFib. The chamois uses variable density padding and is pre-shaped to enhance blood flow. Its floating top-sheet reduces friction and conforms to your shape as it pulls moisture away from your skin.

While a comfortable chamois is a necessity for any long rides, nothing guarantees comfort like a precise fit. To ensure this, Pearl designed the cut to allow full range of motion while cycling. The lower leg follows a contoured shape that terminates with an ankle zipper for easy on and off with thick, winter socks. Adding to the cold weather rising bliss is the breathable, but warming, Transfer fabric on the upper and raw cut bib straps.

  • Pearl Izumi's warmest cycling tights handles winter's worst
  • Never fear the wind with softshell stopping power
  • Thermal material stretches, insulates, and breathes
  • Ankle zips help make pulling on and off easy
  • Raw edge bib straps are super comfortable
  • Reflective details help visibility under dim, winter skies

Wear these in ozark winters. Have cycled in them at or around the 20 degree farenheit mark with 10 mph winds. These along with a base layer as well as a santini jacket have done the trick. Just a hair long for me , alas I'm not tall though , but still fit very well with bigger quads for my size.

I own the 2007 predecessor of these bib tights, so I can make a direct comparison. Back then they were simply called Pearl Izumi's AmFib Bib Tights and they have been my favorites for cold weather cycling or XC skiing. Apparently one now needs to be a little careful on correct size selection in Pearl Izumi (PI). Until I purchased these new Elite Escape AmFib Tights (2020) I always selected PI clothing in size medium. I am 5' 9", 153 pounds, 40 chest, 31" inseam, have a measured 34.5" waist, but usually take 34 in most men's clothing due to 'vanity sizing'. I would say that I have an athletic, but not overly muscular build. I initially ordered these in Medium, but I found them to be uncomfortably snug just about everywhere. I will add that that the newest Amfib wind-block material is a little heavier, stiffer, and less stretchy than what's in my original Amfib Bib Tights, so I exchanged for a size Large and they fit me much better. I still use my original pair of 2007 AmFib bibs, but these new ELITE Escape AmFib Bib Tights are a bit warmer. The raw cut shoulder straps are also more comfy than what's on my older pair. Note that these bibs DO NOT have an integrated chamois pad. I do not want or need one for XC skiing. When the tights are used for cold weather cycling I simply wear a pair of bike shorts underneath them. That also reduces required washings of the bibs tights.

I bought M based on sizing chart, fits fine though despite my long legs these run even a bit longer. Chamois is not Pearl's best but certainly good, comfortable on 2-4 hour rides. In terms of main purpose of these, Bioviz accents and coloring is excellent for visibility in dark/rainy conditions. Completely windproof. Have not tried in monsoon, but in steady light rain they've repelled fine. As far as thermal protection, I'd put these towards the coldest end of the spectrum--anything warmer than 35F and I'd probably go with something else, but I was perfectly fine riding in these into single digit temps. One note on fit--these are relatively heavy compare to my other thermal products and a bit thick/bulky. I'm not a racer or chasing PR's and am fine with this, but if you're chasing watt savings or concerned about aero, I would not consider these "race fit".

I bought theses for the hi vis on the legs. I have two pairs without the chamois. Therefore, I had to wear a bib short underneath. The material is thick and warm. The wind protection is outstanding. Great for longer rides below 40 deg. The only issue I had was the low quality chamois. It's not contoured in any way and will bunch up.

These are amongst my all-time favorite 2-3 apparel items. I've used them in air temps within the range of low-to-mid 30s F down to 10-12 F, and have been comfortable. Most often, these have been fat bike rides. That comfort level in such conditions is realized with just a very trivial, barely noticeable sense of restriction vs. that of tights designed for less extreme conditions.

    Toasty!

    Familiarity:
    I've used it several times

Took a shot in the dark and hit the target with this one! Toasty warm and fits well enough. At 5'8, 185lbs (36" waist), it's always a challenge to get bibs that fit. The leg length runs right down to the top of my shoes (29-30" inseam) which is perfect for me. This is California, where we call 45 deg freezing cold, but even standing around at 45 deg waiting for the ride to start, I was perfectly comfortable. The flame yellow is highly visible, which is a nice plus on the roads. The material seems a touch stiff, but is fine once you're riding. The chamois is comfortable and unobtrusive. Have worn them on about a half dozen rides and will be buying a second pair to get through the Winter.

Warmer than my old gore winter tights. Seem well made. My waist is 35. I tried L size but a touch tight. XL fitted okay and are comfortable. So far I'm very happy with these bibs. I guess some riders may prefer the tighter fit though.

Do these have zippers on the legs? How good are these for wet weather? What is the suggested temp rating for these?

I haven’t purchased these but considering it, it says in description there are ankle zips.

Yes they have leg zippers. They are great at keeping you warn in the wet but will not keep you dry. I wear these anytime its raining and below 60F OR dry and between 20-30F

    Tights? Not really.

    Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I've been trying to find a replacement for my Craft Storm tights (out of production) but the windproof fabric on these PI tights is oddly, uncomfortably stiff. Ordered one size over based on the size recommendation, so not only are they stiff, but they don't fit like a true tight. Gonna keep looking.

Very warm but suggest you go up one size. I usually wear a medium but sent these back for a large. The medium was just to tight. Otherwise awesome product. Warm and love the right amount of seat padding.

    Very Warm

    Fit:
    True to size

I'm 5'10" 155 and the M fits perfectly. Nice and toasty on cold rides (30's to low 50's), but I'd say a bit too warm once you get into the high 50's . They don't feel restrictive when pedaling, and I like the stirrups because they completely prevent drafts. Chamois is very comfortable on my standard rides of 15-20 miles. Recommended.

    Warm when its cold

    Familiarity:
    I've used it several times
    Fit:
    True to size

When the temperature gets down to freezing or below, the Amfibs are the answer. They are warm, comfortable and still easy to pedal. Some winter tights fight you as you pedal and these don't. I'd rather they didn't have stirrups but its no big deal. They fit well, are comfortable and are warm which has to my biggest concern as temperatures get lower and lower. Definitely recommended. PI says they are good for 30-45 F. I've used them to 25 F and I don't think I would use them for any warmer than 45 F.

Are they too warm for 35-50 F?

Can you provide your height and waist and what size you bought? How long are your winter rides in these tights?

My hands can only stay warm for about an hour in sub freezing rides so that limits my rides. I’m 5’9” 130 lbs and size S fits fine.
