Great, versatile pants

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

I'm 5'10", 145# have used the Houdini pants for trail running, wind and warmth and they're great! Extraordinarily light, but do the job. Pack so small I can put them in the pocket of my shorts (always wear for the pockets) if not wearing a running pack. Can wear under or over the shorts - very versatile. For me, worth the price.
Four stars because the fit is slim. I wear, ordered small' pants, had to return for "medium" to permit movement.

good for wind not for rain

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

The description states these are water resistant which is really different than waterproof. I should have known better when I chose to use these pants on a multi-week bike tour through Europe. They packed small and light which seemed to make them perfect for bike touring. They did a great job dealing with the wind. However, they were useless in the rain. For future trips I will bring pants that work for both wind and rain.

A new essential

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I bought and wore these for a 2 night hike up Mount Whitney and they were awesome for early morning (2am) and evening when shorts weren't quite warm enough or there were mosquitoes. They are now a part of my ultralight clothing system for trips where I don't expect temperatures below freezing or precipitation more than a light rain.

Nice and ligh

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Great for packpacking. Shed water good for what they are. I did put a hole in the seat of them already. To the pants credit I was wearing them in a very rocky area.

Overall good

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M

I wouldn't trust them in any rainy situation, this is not a rain pant. It's too thin. I use them in the summer as a wind breaker/ night camp pant to block mosquitos. They are good to throw on when it's just chilly enough to be uncomfortable but if you didn't have the pants it wouldn't be the end of the world. I love the fact it's pants you keep in your shorts. I have also found shorts I can keep in my pants. One issue is the cuffs don't cover shoes well, so it's not very flattering.

Almost Perfect

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large

The perfect emergency wind pant. A great option to throw into your bag for backpacking in the mountains. For those cold windy summit days, to lounging around in the cool evening, these pants are a no brainier add to any backpackers bag. They do shed light moisture for those quick afternoon storms, but I would be wary of trusting them in a full down pour for more than a half hour.

That being said, I would have loved a drawstring. I constantly have to pull my pants up a little bit or tuck in a layer to help them from sliding down. There already is an elastic band, so I don't imagine it would add too much of a weight penalty to have a solid cord that can be adjusted.

not enough pant for the price

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: m

Super thin material and no drawstring made these pants not durable or practical enough for me. The pants fit slim and do pack incredibly small, which is the main appeal. Cuff doesn't open enough to put on over running shoes. I like the concept but just not enough "value" to justify the price.

great pants

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: medium

I use this pants as part of my gear in the Camino de Santiango as second layer over my tights and it works great and also as a second pair of pants when washing or lounging around. Durable, wind resistance, but did not use during hiking in the rain.

Let me tell you the #1 reason

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

Why should you choose to pony up your hard earned cash for the Patagonia Houdini Pants? One word: Packability. These pants pack down into the rear pocket, and then can be compressed even further using a small ziplock bag. They are ultralight. These should be in your pack on every trip, no matter what the weather forecast says. Snap closure cuffs allow you to pull them on right away. Once you hear that crack of thunder and it begins to pour, there is no time to fumble around with tight cuffs that require you to take your shoes off. Whip out your Houdini pants from the side pocket of your pack, and throw them on. Boom. Now on to more important things.

Wonderful and very practical

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

While touring the US on a motorcycle last year, I saw the Houdini jacket on an outdoor store and thought it would be great to venture the rain on the road. And I was right. It was flawless. I wanted to buy the pants, but couldn't find it anywhere.

I know it's not the intended use, but it sure beats using heavy rain plastic gear that will not only constrict your movements, but will not breathe at all. It's common to get home more wet on the inside from the sweat than the rain itself. Plus, they normally take a lot of space on your backpack/panniers.

The Houdini pants + jacket are unbelievably compact and do the job wonderfully. Plus, they can be worn over my regular motorcycle jacket/pants. Highly recommended!
