Knowledge is power.

As good as the industry's rapid technology evolution is for our experience on the bike, the constant changes make servicing and maintenance a hassle. Thankfully, though, Park Tool's Big Blue Book of Bike Repair, 3rd Edition is a complete, up-to-date repair manual for everyone from novices to veterans.

Written by Park Tool Director of Education, Calvin Jones, the Big Blue Book features step-by-step instructions on everything from trail-side repairs to major overhauls on road, mountain, and BMX bikes. The third edition adds Tubeless tire systems, 11-speed drivetrains, BB30 and PF30, along with many other detailed instructions to this respected reference book.

The book also contains headset standards and SHIS standards, along with updated torque and tool tables. Keep Park Tool's 3rd Edition of the Big Blue Book of Bike Repair in your home shop and you'll have the power to tackle any repair at arms length.

good resource

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

good resource to have, especially if your just learning how to do bike repairs yourself.

Nice To Have

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is an awesome book if you are fairly new to bike repairs. Lots of great info in here.

save a few bucks

Trying to save a few bucks on simple repairs and maintenance. Also want to know more about the workings of this obsession. This is a good pick up just to have and glance through in your down time or read up on as the bike is on the repair stand.

    Great informative book

This book has lots of good info in it. It will come in handy for anyone interested in repairing their own bikes.

      3rd edition-solid resource...

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I know my way enough around a bike to be dangerous when repairing or tearing things apart and rebuilding. Anybody can put a video on youtube on how to bleed brakes or rebuild a shock and I'm thankful they do, but having this as a reputable resource for reference is great. Bike technology changes rapidly so the pics and info sometimes gets dated with the 'old school' printed technology. But the basics of drivetrain maintenance are the same across 8, 9, 10, 11 and now 12 speed so don't be scared away thinking its dated material. And to that end, Park updates this periodically. I've got the 1st addition and now the 3rd edition (2013)--as expected, significant changes and updates between the two.

      Great Resource for Great Bikes

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Definitely a really thorough and detailed resource for pretty much any bike repair/maintenance/build you would want to do.

Not going to be the most helpful for "simpler" bikes and there are a lot of superflous tasks (i.e., not everyone is going to make sure their new frame is aligned). But I think this book is worth it if you're serious about bike repair.

Fun to use and not overly complicated

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've only pulled this thing out once or twice since I bought it but I like the layout and am glad it's there when I need it. Definitely a handy tool to have for those of us who don't have years of shop experience but still like to do as much of our own repairs as we can.

So that is how it is supposed to be done

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

In the past an auto mechanic would fix a car based on experience. Now they won't do anything without following a written procedure. This book is that written procedure for bikes. Since starting to follow procedures in the book, my maintenance is more precise. Also it is nice to have an up-to-date reference guide in hand.
