How to Measure:
For best results, have someone take the measurement for you.
Torso:
Start at the iliac crest (the top of your hipbone that you can feel like a shelf on the side of your body). From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down. Make sure to keep your back straight while having the measurement taken.
Hip:
Measure around your hips, at your iliac crest, not your waist.

Pockets Galore!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is my first Osprey pack and first bike-specific pack, and I am blown away by how awesome this thing is!

For starters, there are plenty of pockets to store things in. I even found a surprise side pocket during my bike trip to Fruita, and that opened up another array of storage possibilities for this pack. There is a main compartment for things like knee/elbow pads, gloves, another layer, etc. The Raven also has a hydration reservoir sleeve that integrates a zipper into the shoulder strap, so there's no fussing around with getting the hose to fit neatly. Along with that, the shoulder has an elastic loop that secures the hose better to the strap, and there is a magnet on the chest strap that keeps the mouthpiece in place during your ride.

The Raven has a small fleece lined pocket that is designed for glasses, but you can use it for other smaller items. The side pocket on the body of the pack contains a mesh pouch on the inside, and can be used to store phones, keys, more snacks, etc. In addition to that, the body of the pack has an outer storage space for a shell or warmer jacket that buckles shut, so your jacket is out of the way and secure until you need it.

Finally, the Raven has a bike tool specific compartment at the bottom of the pack, so you can store tubes, wrenches, etc. It rolls out to a 3 section panel so you can really organize everything you need in there. The tool pouch is also removable.

The hydration reservoir that comes with this pack surprised me -- it's a fold top reservoir, and at first I was a little skeptical of how secure the seal would be. But the top has a plastic sliding cap that further seals the reservoir and no amount of shaking let any water through! Once you suck all the extra air out of the reservoir it's a good size and did not leak once on my entire trip.

Cons: - The mouthpiece doesn't have a cover, so it's exposed to dirt and the elements all the time. It's not really an issue but when you set your pack down, you'll find that you have to clean the mouthpiece off.
- The strap adjustment system is a little weird and confusing. Once I've got the length dialed to my size (I'm pretty small) there is a lot of extra strap that can't really be tucked away cleanly. It has clips on the straps that help alleviate this, but I don't think it works very well. This could better be solved by cutting the extra length though.

Aside from that I am in love with this pack -- it's designed specifically for biking but you could definitely use this for hiking too!

Excellent Pack

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Bought this for my wife, here is what she had to say "The Osprey Raptor 14 is the perfect size for any day hike or for a day of mountain biking. The included hydration bladder is awesome if that is what you want, otherwise there is plenty of room for large water bottles inside. I have used this pack on several hikes and I especially appreciate all of the pockets so you can keep your food/water/layers separated and easily access exactly what you want. Seriously, I keep discovering new pockets. The front stuff it pouch can handle a lot, including a large jacket once you've reached the top of the mountain and are just too hot to wear it anymore! I haven't used the mountain biking tool kit pouch on the bottom, as that is not my primary use of the bag - but I can imagine it would be a great use if you are frequently spending whole days on the bike and need to keep your equipment in tip top shape. "
