How to Measure:
For best results, have someone take the measurement for you.
Torso:
Start at the iliac crest (the top of your hipbone that you can feel like a shelf on the side of your body). From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down. Make sure to keep your back straight while having the measurement taken.
Hip:
Measure around your hips, at your iliac crest, not your waist.

Go forth and ride!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is an awesome backpack. It can fit all that you need for a longer tide, tools, water, and food. you can even get a jacket and first aid kit in there. It sticks well to your body, but isn't too hot. The helmet carrier is also a really nice touch. 5 stars

Pockets Galore!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is my first Osprey pack and first bike-specific pack, and I am blown away by how awesome this thing is!

For starters, there are plenty of pockets to store things in. I even found a surprise side pocket during my bike trip to Fruita, and that opened up another array of storage possibilities for this pack. There is a main compartment for things like knee/elbow pads, gloves, another layer, etc. The Raven also has a hydration reservoir sleeve that integrates a zipper into the shoulder strap, so there's no fussing around with getting the hose to fit neatly. Along with that, the shoulder has an elastic loop that secures the hose better to the strap, and there is a magnet on the chest strap that keeps the mouthpiece in place during your ride.

The Raven has a small fleece lined pocket that is designed for glasses, but you can use it for other smaller items. The side pocket on the body of the pack contains a mesh pouch on the inside, and can be used to store phones, keys, more snacks, etc. In addition to that, the body of the pack has an outer storage space for a shell or warmer jacket that buckles shut, so your jacket is out of the way and secure until you need it.

Finally, the Raven has a bike tool specific compartment at the bottom of the pack, so you can store tubes, wrenches, etc. It rolls out to a 3 section panel so you can really organize everything you need in there. The tool pouch is also removable.

The hydration reservoir that comes with this pack surprised me -- it's a fold top reservoir, and at first I was a little skeptical of how secure the seal would be. But the top has a plastic sliding cap that further seals the reservoir and no amount of shaking let any water through! Once you suck all the extra air out of the reservoir it's a good size and did not leak once on my entire trip.

Cons: - The mouthpiece doesn't have a cover, so it's exposed to dirt and the elements all the time. It's not really an issue but when you set your pack down, you'll find that you have to clean the mouthpiece off.

- The strap adjustment system is a little weird and confusing. Once I've got the length dialed to my size (I'm pretty small) there is a lot of extra strap that can't really be tucked away cleanly. It has clips on the straps that help alleviate this, but I don't think it works very well. This could better be solved by cutting the extra length though.

Aside from that I am in love with this pack -- it's designed specifically for biking but you could definitely use this for hiking too!

Ana, Thank you for the detail and great review! Love the picture too. Fruita is awesome, isn't it?? Happy Trails to you!

Great MTB pack for women

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm fairly petite so finding a pack that was small enough to still be able to ride while wearing was a challenge. This pack is the perfect middle between large enough for some extra gear on long rides and small enough to not be bulky on shorter quick rides. Fits perfectly even for smaller torsos/backs. As the other reviews have mentioned - brilliant amount of pockets and compartments to organize and separate everything you could need. And yes, sadly, I was disappointed also that the color is really blue, not turquoise at all. But the pack makes up for it since there's nothing comparable available that I was able to find! Also, I've sadly fallen into many a'rivers and it's done a great job being water resistant so that I never came out with any of my internal belongings being absolutely soaked, just damp which I was pretty stoked on.

Awesome pack!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The pack looks great. Color is darker and bluer than pic shows but I don’t mind. I attached a picture so you can see a bit better what it looks like. I was also concerned about the new bladder system for Osprey but it works really well, it’s easy to open and close and there aren’t any more fears of cross threading and having all of your water leak everywhere before you even get to the trail-head. I love all of the pockets and compartments, especially the tool kit. The only thing I would change on this pack is the small zippered pocket in the front. There are little areas inside this pocket to store things but the pocket only opens on the side. Let me know if you have any questions on the color or specifics. I highly recommend this pack!

Awesome pack!

Thank you so much, Jennifer! Enjoy your Raven!

Nice but wrong color

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Bought this for my hiking partner. The teal is not teal but straight up blue. Almost the same as my royal blue osprey. That isn't cool at all osprey

Sorry for any confusion in color here... color is really subjective, but I am sorry it didn't work for your hiking partner. I appreciate the feedback here though, Damon. Thanks for writing!

Awesome bag!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Comes with a 3 L bladder which is perfect and the pocket for it works great. Bag has tons of pockets and can hold a lot for being so little. The colors are great too! I use it mostly for mountain biking and hiking. Take it everywhere else too though.

jack of all trades!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This bag is awesome. I have had a difficult time finding a bag that suits multiple activities needs. but this is the one! The pocket on the bottom that holds tools is so freaking great! and when i'm using this bag for hiking i switch out the tools for safety items or small items that you might need but don't need readily accessible. The hydration bladder holds 3 liters which is awesome, and i love the magnetic button the pack has on the front clip so the tube isn't dangling or in the way. POCKETS FOR DAYS! so many places to store gear. I seriously love this bag. it's the perfect size for biking or hiking or really any activity you don't want a big clunky backpack.

Best Backpack

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the best backpack. I take it every where. As a carry on for flying, on road trips, camping, hiking, and even school. I could fit my 13" laptop in it along with a small book. It is the perfect, small backpack.

Thanks for the great review, Rory!

Can't say enough!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I just can't say enough about this pack... it's just another great design from Osprey. Lid lock keeps my helmet secure when I am walking around, zippered access to the hydration sleeve is effortless, the reservoir is the best I have used, and especially with the magneted bite valve!

I love the pockets and organization of the Raven, especially the tool roll. The fit works great on my short torso and the aesthetics are fantastic. Beautiful and functional for sure!

It's the little things!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I will start by saying I am a big fan of Osprey, they make great packs that always have a variety of great little features that make the bags stand out from a functionality standpoint. It is clear that when they are developed they are tested in real life situations. After badly bruising my back while wearing an ill fitting pack on a 40mile ride, I broke down and ordered the Osprey Raven 14 Hydration Pack which I had my eye on for a couple years. I have the Royal Purple which unlike the picture is very purple and not at all blue (for my this was a positive!). The bag is a great fit for a small torso. There are great stretchy zippered pockets on the waist belt that are perfect for an easily accessible snack bar. The included hydration sleeve has a tube that magnetically clips to your chest strap for easy out of the way access. And there is a great clip for storing your helmet when you are off bike and wandering town.
This is a great bag with lots of great features. I docked it down a star because the image doesn't match the actual color, but functionally the bag is great!

I agree with your Ginger, the Royal Purple is more purple than the website picture lets on. If you could post a picture of your pack in action that would be awesome! Hope you have been finding lots of time to use it.

Looks like backcountry posted a new picture that reflects the purple color! I have no rad pictures to post, but will try to take one next time I am using the bag.

Wrong color, otherwise amazing

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I ordered the Tempo Teal color, but in real life, the color is bright blue, not at all teal. It's a pretty color, in my opinion, but it doesn't match my other gear very well. Disappointing :(

Other than the color, everything about this pack is amazing. I wanted a small daypack for hiking that could organize and fit all my essentials. I can fit water (obviously), rain coat, extra socks, extra leggings, bear spray, a first aid kit, two tubes of sunscreen, headlamps, knife, whistle, food, sunglasses, etc. and all of it is organized and easy to access! It makes everything easier when you're tired and don't have to dig to the bottom of your pack to find that chocolate bar you're craving. My only complaint is that my phone doesn't fit in the hip pockets, but that's not a big deal. If you're a minimalist hiker who still carries the essentials, you'll love this bag.

I hate the giant Osprey logos splashed across the front of the bag, and yeah, the colors aren't great, but you can't have everything!

I originally purchased the men's version of this pack (the Raptor 14). That pack is identical, as far as I can tell, except that the chest strap doesn't move high enough, hitting me right across my breast (and I'm fairly petite). Too bad, because I liked the dark gray color of the men's bag!
