Custom-fit suspension systems are Osprey's bread and butter, so it makes sense that the Hydraulics Hydration Reservoir is shaped with a rigid backer plate to prevent any interference with how your pack fits and carries. Additionally, the durable TPU reservoir material keeps water tasting exactly the way it should, and the bite valve keeps the hose secure when you're cruising up the trail.

  • BPA- and phthalate-free material
  • HydroStatic backer plate

Best Hydration Reservoir

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love the magnetic connector on the bite valve. It makes it easy to drink while bike riding. Its also an incredibly easy reservoir to clean. Make sure you get an osprey cleaning kit too. It makes cleaning even easier and you can use the brush to wash your water bottles too.

Awesome Reservoir

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Osprey hydration reservoir is an essential to me when I am out there backpacking. It's a great hydration reservoir to use with just about any pack, but especially great paired with an Osprey pack! I toss it in the back of my Aether AG 60 and off I go. I have it in the 3L because I like to do a lot of weekend/overnight trips with it. It can get a little bit heavy when full. However, if you are trying to travel with as little weight as possible I would probably look into the Osprey LT Hydration Reservoir. Overall, awesome hydration reservoir and it does the trick for always keeping a few liters of fresh water right on hand for you for those multi-day trips.

Are you supposed to be able to refill this through the detachable hose, or is that simply to keep your hose in your backpack while you take the reservoir out to refill?

Abigail, I am sorry for my delayed response! You can leave the hose in your pack and remove the reservoir to fill it - Easy!!

Hope that helps,

Drinking Water in the Mountains: Hydration Systems

So being a hydration bladder guy, I have owned quite a few hydration systems. on a recent backpacking trip and I brought out all the ones I own and tested them up against one another.
So let go through the candidates…
the one I have owned the longest is the
Platypus Big Zip 2.0 Liter
The Platypus is a good system, but it falls short from being perfect.
I had to add Bite Valve Cover, the Ergo Hydrolock & Quick link conversion kit.

Like the large opening at the top
The quick connect to the bladder
All my mods

You have to close the top manually before attaching blue lock or it will leak
Bite valve leaks even with the cover
I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Vapur 1.5 Liter DrinkLink Hydration System
The Vapur is a good system and I use it to drink Gatorade mix in water, it's great at that but it still has it's weak spots.

The tube system is perfect
Bite valve has a on & off that is a push pull system
The connection to the bag is a quick connect
You can switch out the hose with the super cap and use it as a giant water bottle
Collapses very small

All quick connections disconnects easily, sometimes with out pushing the release buttons
When being used as a hydration bladder there isn't a way to prevent it from falling down the hydration sleeve/pocket
Not as easy to fill as the others systems

Best Use:
As extra water storage at camp or on the move
I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

The Osprey is pretty close to perfection. It has a huge opening for filling
Quick connection and a on and off in the bite valve.
Very light
Has a carry handle
Big easy opening & Once closed it stays closed

The off and on of the bite valve turns, I prefer the push pull of the Vapur
Should have come with the Bite valve cover
This one ranks the highest 4 out of 5 starts
So my choice of hydration system is The Osprey

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got this in 3 liter and it is compatible with my Osprey Aether 85. Simple to use both filling from a faucet as well as purifying from a stream. the detachable hose makes hauling it out of the pack easier.

I needed a bladder for my Escapist 18 and the 3L fits/works perfectly! I like the detachable hose for seamless refills, etc.. and have found it very easy to clean. The slider is a great idea and easier to fill up than my older capped bladder.

Thanks for the great review, Joe!

    Love the big mount

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love the big mouth opening on this bag. It makes it very easy to fill with ice and especially to clean. Open it up and scrub it out. Highly recommended.

    Thank you Marc!

Great features, including a wide mouth for easy fill and clean, and magneted locking bite valve and an easy grab handle. Happy Trails!

    Dries out entirely!

After spending some time with this bladder, I'm finding the best feature to be how it dries out entirely when hanging upside down. The same cannot be said for the competitor.

      Hey Emma,

You know, I never thought of it until you and I spoke the other day, but you are so right on with this. The texture of the reservoir makes it dry so much more quickly. No slime! Thanks for the review!

      need extra water?

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I really like mine, the top is a little bit different, but still works great, and makes it easy to put ice into the water to keep my water nice and cold during my rides.

Best, but used to be better

I've owned all three generations of Osprey reservoirs now. The 1st (nalgene) was pretty heavy, but fantastic. The 2nd was great once you cut the top retaining strap off. This 3rd generation has a lot of changes. I really don't like the hydrapak folding top, but I'm willing to put up with it because this one is MUCH lighter than the previous ones.

I wanted to give it two stars to let Osprey know how disappointed I am with the new bite valve, but overall it still deserves the 4 stars I'm giving it. The old bite valve could be locked/unlocked easily with one hand, and you could tell the status of that from 20 feet away. The magnet (genius!) used to be integrated, instead of a separate clip. You could also bend it to a much easier to drink from 90 degrees. The new one? Worse in every way. I wonder if they'll sell me the old valve still...

        Broke first use

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I was so excited to have a bladder that had a rigid back for sliding into a pack that much easier. It packed into camp perfectly, no hose issues, no problems! Hiking out, I tried to slightly adjust the hose on my shoulder and it snapped off drenching myself and my pack.

The concept is cool, but maybe needs a little more tweaking.

        It's Wonderful

I absolutely love the foldable opening. It is a lot easier to clean than other hydration packs that come with screw on tops. The foldable opening also means that I'm less likely to close it improperly and have a slow leak.

          Good opening.

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Gatorade not only quenches your thirst better, it tastes better too. Just kidding, high quality H20 is the way to go, and this bad boy will keep you quenched. The zip closure is easy to use, and the large opening works better than my old reservoir.

          You gotta stay hydrated

I love this reservoir. I use it for skiing and mountain biking. During the summer, the opening is plenty big for ice cubes so my water isn't piss warm an hour into my ride.
