Himalaya Cycling Shoe

When you're absolutely committed to riding year around and refuse to let winters worse keep you off the bike, reach for the Himalaya Shoe from Northwave. It already has a feather in its cap for building class-leading snowboard boots, so constructing a sturdy and warm cycling shoe isn't a stretch for the Italian firm. Everything from its Michelin rubber outsole all the way up to its ankle closures is designed to keep your feet warm and dry during your two-wheel winter adventures.

Northwave uses an SL2 lacing system with a longer power strap for the closure of the Himalaya. Let's face it, we don't want to pull off our toasty winter gloves to deal with traditional, wet shoelaces or deal with frozen or ice packed dials and buckles, so this type of closure is quite welcome. It's all covered up with custom-designed closures at the ankle that provide a snug fit and keep the elements out.

The outside of the upper consists of leather with a protective water-repellent treatment while the inside gets a Thinsulate 400g lining for cozy warmth and insulation while trudging through the snow, making first tracks. The entire upper receives 360-degree protection in the form of highly abrasion resistant rubber reinforcements. Inside the shoe, an Arctic GTX footbed with its four-layer aluminum and fleece construction provides extra warmth, mops up sweat, and radiates body heat further keeping you toasty.

Down below, a Michelin Rock’R sole uses two different rubber compounds providing the proper amounts of stiffness an excellent grip on wet and icy surfaces. The sole has provisions for 2-bolt mountain cleats while a reinforced rubber heel enhances protection on those off the bike excursions. Final details include large reflective details for enhanced visibility in low light and a loop at the toe to mount a gaiter attachment.

My Go To Winter Shoe

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I own several types of winter riding shoes/boots, and this one is by far my favorite. It’s warm, and surprisingly hiking boot-like comfortable. I can easily walk in them during cafe stops, and then clip back in for the ride. With a single pair of cycling socks, I’ve worn these down into the single digit wind chills with no cold feet. Fit is as advertised — true to size.
