Embrace the mud.

We all want our trail days to be perfectly sunny, cool, and dry, but that's not how it works. Besides, a little water keeps the dirt nice and tacky, so you might as well embrace the rain in the Norrøna Fjørå Dri3 Shorts. they're made with a Dri3 membrane — a waterproof and breathable layer that also has smoothly taped seams for full water protection — and mesh-lined side vents to help you cool off when things go from damp to humid.

The Fjørå Shorts also have built-in stretch for easy pedaling, and three zippered pockets hold snacks and other trail essentials. They fit like a racer's dream, too, slightly slimmer than many freeride shorts and with a gently raised rear hem and longer front hem for extra coverage when you're pedaling or ripping Scandinavian singletrack.

Roomy, durable, waterproof, breathable

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: large

I have to admit to some skepticism about how these would fit, bike clothes are generally loose in the waist and tight everywhere else. I opted for large, based on specs and reviews. I think I could have gotten away with medium, but they would have fit more tightly than I like.
The size large falls just below my knee, and gives me ample room in the thighs and booty areas. The waist is adjusted with Velcro tabs and is considerably higher in the back than the front. Speaking of the front, it's held shut with two snaps and a zippered fly.
The fabric is waterproof and as breathable as one would expect; the two-way side zips add serious ventilation.
There is a thigh pocket on the left leg with a cell phone pocket inside. It holds an iPhone 6s with an Apple auxiliary battery case firmly against the inside of the pocket, but it also allows sweat to accumulate on the phone.
On the front part of the hips are two pockets, held closed with hidden zippers. The pockets are good for small things, like a small wallet (I have a small, folded Tyvek wallet) or keys, maybe a multi tool or Epic bar (the salmon ones!). I'd like to see the pockets moved to a more traditional hip pocket location, but these aren't bad.
There is no back pockets. To me it's an irritation, but not the end of the world. On longer rides, I can stash keys and wallet elsewhere.
So far I wore these more for wet weather photo assignments (yes, the electric blue. I'm not cool enough to dress in all black) than bike riding; and, that bike riding was a fixed gear bike in Austin. Both were during the South by Southwest festival.
I plan to take some longer adventures in Oregon and northern California where the fit and features of these stellar shorts will be perfect.
