Faster and stronger.

A few years after the introduction of its Pro4 tire line, Michelin is attracting attention for the arrival of Pro4's successor, the Power Competition Tire. Power took its time getting here, evolving from Michelin's moto GP tires of the same name, but it looks to have been worth the wait. The entire Power line boasts quantifiable gains compared to its aging predecessor — delivering improvements in rolling resistance, puncture protection, and grip — and each different model is built using a slightly different formula to suit it best to its specific discipline. In the case of the Competition, this entails a focus on lower rolling resistance, dependable puncture protection, supple grip for hard cornering, and — of course — competition-grade speed.

After extensive testing against the Pro4 Service Course tires, Michelin's everyday training tire, the Competition was found to provide a 10-watt improvement in performance, equating to significant time gains at speed. (We'd be remiss if we didn't note that the comparison was between a racing-specific tire and an everyday training tire.) Michelin doesn't give detailed information about the Competition's composition, but we do know that it uses resin-reinforced rubber known as Race Compound to construct the Competition, giving it rolling resistance improvements and improved durability that justify a slightly heavier weight.

Almost 5.

    Sidewalls went out early. Seems to be common. Feels like an upgrade compared to top competitors.

    Fast but fragile

    Such an AWESOME tire, but front sidewall formed a hole after about 650 miles (23c). Rear is still running strong (25c). Only getting 4 stars just because of the side wall fail. Otherwise handling, suppleness, and grip better that my Conti Gp4ks

    Worthy Successor to the Pro4

    I've always been a big fan of the previous gen Michelin Pro4, as to me they featured a great blend of ride quality, durability, and puncture protection. They were good enough tires where i could train all day on them and not hesistate to race on them as well. Michelin seems to have upped the ride quality on these tires significantly... they ride much closer to something like a vittoria but also offer great durability and puncture resistance. Currently 1000 miles in with no flats and still going strong in terms of wear.

    Blown sidewall after less than 200 miles

    I put a set of these on my Orbea about 1.5 weeks ago. They measured up slightly narrower than the Vittoria Rubino 25s I was replacing on my Vision Team 30 rims. I noticed a very marginal speed gain over the Vittorias, and I felt a little less rolling resistance on climbs. I was pretty happy with them until I heard a loud "POP" on an evening ride. The rear sidewall blew out after less than 200 miles of riding. I know this isn't an uncommon problem with any tire, but at this price I really can't recommend a tire that fails so quickly and has such poor quality control. Luckily the good ol' gearheads are refunding me for the failed one and hooking me up with some Conti GP4000s that I should have bought in the first place. Hopefully they prove to be a more durable race tire. I like going fast, but you can't go fast if you ain't moving.

    FYI re Width

    Just want people to know that on HED Ardennes+ rims, this tire (25mm version) has an actual width of 28.4 mm. The rear wheel/tire BARELY fits in my 2012 Cannondale Supersix EVO.

    Thanks for this review!! Hed Ardennes indeed normally have their tires blow up well over their advertised width. Always double check the internal rim width of your wheelset and your frame's clearance before you jump right in to "28c", as a tire labeled as 25c can sometimes actually turn out to be 28mm, as you saw yourself.

    Any idea how thees size up , are they plump like the pro 4S

    I have both on two different wheelsets but with similar internal/external widths. To my eye the Pro4s are fatter in a 25 than the new Power in a 25

    Something Very Special

    I bought these for my Zipp 404 NSW's to use as a competition wheelset. The combination is superb (borderline unfair). I now find myself as one of the stronger riders in my weekly shop ride without putting out extra wattage on the power meter. It's amazing what a difference the right equipment makes. If you're looking for a new set of fast tires, look no further.

    As a side note, I switched to these tires after having several flats on a premium set of Continental Black Editions.

    Must have been the tires!

      This is a follow-up to my earlier review. This past weekend I competed in the NC Senior Games Time Trials. I smashed my previous personal and course records from last year in all three events, the one mile, 5k, and 10k. Last year I rode the events on Specialized S-works Turbos. Everything else was identical, save for my new LG P-09 helmet versus my old Rudy. So I can only conclude it was the tires! :-}

      Silky Smooth

        Having competed seriously in TTs for over ten years now, I will admit to falling prey to the marketing hype when companies are trying to sell me "free speed." However, the research and data from Michelin on these new tires was compelling. I raced these last week for the first time in the last race of the 2016 series at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Though I had a good race I was still ten seconds slower than my all-time PR from last year, which was set on a well-worn set of Bontrager XXX Time Trial tires! This year I have been running Specialized S-Works Turbo clinchers, which scored near the top in the venerable Velonews lab tests. My time on the Michelins was a mere three seconds slower than my season-best on the S-Works, which could easily be accounted for by a slight difference in wind conditions. Bottom line: Though one race is hardly conclusive, the Michelins did not magically produce a new PR for me, but the certainly felt silky smooth on the bike and no slower than the Specialized. And if your head is convinced that you have given up nothing to better equipment, then they are probably worth giving a try the next time you need a new set of race tires.
