Description

Enduro trifecta: light, stiff, and strong.

Built from the ground up for the needs of aggressive riding disciplines, the Mercury X3 Enduro 27.5in Boost Wheelset strikes the sweet spot for enduro and all-mountain riders seeking a do-it-all wheelset that's relatively lightweight, reliably strong, and stiff, but without the bankroll-draining price that comes with premium carbon hoops. The X3 Enduro Wheelset is updated for 2018 with a lower profile design that's more responsive than ever, plus a 30-millimeter internal width that optimally supports tires from 2.2 up to 2.8 inches in width.

The X3 Enduro Wheelset is pleasingly stiff for a set of alloy hoops, thanks to its two-cross lacing pattern, plus the improved bracing angle inherent to wheels built with Boost spacing in mind. The two-cross lacing pattern does offer a bit of vertical compliance, which is designed to smooth out the ride feel over especially rough terrain, but without sacrificing precision in steering or tracking on the trail.

Mercury laser welds the X3 Enduro to ensure a consistent, seamless rim that's well-balanced and without irregularities. The pronounced bead socket and flat rim bed allow you to easily set-up tubeless tires without excessive effort on your part. They're finished with Mercury's branded MTB Disc hub with sealed cartridge bearings for longevity, even in sloppy conditions. 28 Sapim Race double-butted spokes and Sapim brass nipples ensure a reliable, strong wheelset, but without the excessive weight of burlier wheels with 32 spokes.

  • Mercury's signature alloy wheels for all-mountain and enduro
  • Redesigned with a lower profile shape for responsiveness
  • Alloy balances the needs of reliable strength with low weight
  • 30mm internal width supports 2.2 up to massive 2.8-inch tires
  • Two-cross lacing pattern and Boost hub spacing for stiffness
  • Mercury's branded MTB Disc hub with sealed cartridge bearings
  • Pronounced bead socket and flat rim bed for tubeless set-up

Nice wheelsets at a great price.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I’ve had these for over a year now without any issues at all. Very true right of the box. They roll well with no burping and are stiff when climbing. Very happy with my purchase. Plus they’re hand built in the USA.

Good wheels, simple service, shipping--

Wheels look good so far, arrived with correct axles. Axle caps are very easily removable, freehub as well. They came with tape and valves for tubeless setup. Freehub sound is fairly loud, typical 3(?) pawl sound. Spokes were obviously prepped and nipples oiled, seem to be well built.

This product does not qualify for Backcountry's shipping discount after $50, and so with tax and shipping, you're paying about 15% more. Still, this wheelset is very light. If weight is not an issue, however, you can find better deals elsewhere, especially UK sites. On top of the charge, shipping was very slow compared to even some of my international orders. I probably wouldn't buy another wheelset from Backcountry.

    Weak Wheels

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These Wheels cams packaged well and sealed up tubeless tires no problem. I got Cush Core inserts at the same time as well.

I bought both hg and xd drivers.

First ride on the wheels went well and they seemed fine to me. Unfortunately on the 2nd ride I’ve already got a decent dent in my rear rim even with Cush core inserts and a normal tire pressure.

Not sure I’d purchase these again. Would be worth it to spend some more money to get a wheelset that’s more durable. So far I’m not impressed. Also contacted mercury support and they said, “Dings can certainly happen while trail riding”

    Weak Wheels

    Exceptional

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Hammered these wheels all season and they've done well. I was excited to shed some of the weight from the old wheels and the advantage was clear right from the gate. Hub bearings are still rolling smooth and the wheels have remained true even with multiple dings.
When I purchased them, they were not this discounted but at this price it seems like having a back up pair wouldn't be a bad idea.

Not boost in rear wheel !!

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I purchased this set of wheels in the beginning of Sept 2018 during this sale. First set 15x110mm in front which is great and what i wanted. Rear is 12x142mm NOT 12x148mm. Dont know why. I have returned first set and gotten new set from them and still the same 12x142mm on second set? Waiting for return of set #2.

Thats NOT indicative of a seller who is taking care of a customer. I’ve been seriously looking for these. This makes me want to look elsewhere - maybe.

    Wheels well Made

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

When first getting the wheels set up, the amount of care put into building the wheels was noticeable. The laser weld truly is seamless, spoke tension was exact and consistent, and the wheels were as true as it gets.
The tubeless tape went on the easy and the tires mounted no problem. I had to purchase different rotors but the new replacements have improved the braking dramatically.
I felt lighter and faster on the climbs, quick and sure footed on the descents.
I would certainly recommend these wheels.

    Sweet Buy

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These wheels have been great. Fit my tires really well and they have shaved some weight compared to the stock wheels.
You wouldn't believe the quality of the wheel for the price until you ride them, crazy good deal.

    Bomber

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have put these wheels through hell and they've done great. Cased jumps, ridden with flats, you know, everything you shouldn't do. I have had the spokes tightened up from my shop but that's been it.
As beat up as they are I reached out to Mercury seeing what a replacement hoop would cost and the price is right and they'll even do the rebuild for me.
I definitely got my moneys worth.

    Great Wheels

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Good upgrade for any bike. I've got an older bike that has ample tire clearance but the stock wheels were only a 20mm internal rim width. You can't get much out of wide, beefy tires when your rolling scrawny rims.
Since I have purchased these the bike has ridden so much better and the tires connect like you would believe.

    Highly Recommend!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These wheels have been great. I've owned a set of Mercury wheels prior to these, some X1's that I'd highly recommend, but I wanted to trick out a new bike on a budget.
I ran into my first and only problem after taking a spill. A small log bent the hell out of a few spokes and broke one but I was able to make it off the mountain no problem. I reached out to the crew at Mercury and after getting the spoke lengths from them they offered to send a handful out. After my shop replaced and trued them the were really impressed of how well the spokes and nipples were prepped, making it much easier to true.
I could not be more impressed with the service behind the wheels and the care they put into to building them.

    Unanswered Question

How many pawls in the free wheel and is it 10 degree engagement? Does it come with the valves and tape or do I need to purchase those extra?
