X1 Enduro 29in Boost Wheelset

Over the past five years we've seen a lot of advancement in mountain bike technology. From refined carbon frames with dialed geometry, to more reliable and effective suspension components, we as riders all benefit from the technological progression of this sport. When it comes to wheels though, there's a small Utah-based company called Mercury that believes more can be done. Their X1 Enduro 29in Boost Wheelset ups the ante in the carbon fiber wheel game by incorporating an advanced composite material they've mysteriously dubbed Fiber-X. Possessing twice the tensile strength of high-modulus carbon fiber, Fiber-X's damping characteristics deliver a trail-tuned ride while increasing the durability and impact resistance of the rim. The result is a stronger wheel that rides better than the competition, allowing you to push your limits on the trail without worrying about your equipment.

The Fiber-X material is blended into the center of the rim, distinguished by the prominent silver stripe in between the carbon. The design works by using an optimized trapezoidal rim profile that funnels trail input into the tough elastic material, dissipating impact energy and avoiding rim failure during violent impacts. The design also dampens the trail in a way that provides riders with a more comfortable and controlled ride—all without sacrificing the lateral rigidity needed for a precise and responsive steering feel.

At the center of the X1 Enduro Wheelset is the new Axis hub system. These hubs use stiffness-boosting straight-pull spokes that are hand-laced to the rim by Mercury's expert wheel builders. The freehub uses a triple-stepped 6-pawl mechanism that delivers an impressive 3.5-degree engagement, putting the Axis hubs right up there with the best offerings on the market.

  • Innovative carbon composite wheels built for enduro abuse
  • Fiber-X material dissipates impact energy to avoid rim failure
  • Trail-tuned rim delivers a more comfortable and controlled ride
  • New Axis hubs offer responsive 3.5-degree engagement
  • 30mm internal width works well for modern trail rubber
  • Hand-laced, straight-pull spokes boost stiffness and durability
  • 1700g claimed weight is impressive for a burly carbon wheelset

Great wheelset!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These X1 Fiber X wheels have been great. I’ve had them for 9 months now and the bearings and spoke tension are as good as they were new. Very quick engagement on the rear hub. For the price, you wouldn't believe the quality but I honestly believe these wheels are the best on market. Highly recommend.

Sweet wheels!

These FiberX rims live up to the hype. They're really light and ride surprisingly well plus take a beaten. Nice hub engagement without all the noise. You really can't go wrong here especially at this amazing price.

Unbelievable wheels!!!

These wheels have been awesome! Have had them for about 8 months now and the bearings and spoke tension are as good as they were new. The hubs have fast engagement for that quick response. For the price, you wouldn't believe the quality but I honestly believe these wheels may be the best on the market. Great job mercury.

Love these wheels!

I’ve been riding these for a full season and I’m truly impressed. Riding on some very technical rough trails and they have preformed just great. Very happy with my purchase.

Bomber wheels!!!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have been riding these for the last 8 months on very rocky and technical trails with no problems. The FiberX provides a great damping effect. Several times in the last few months I thought I would pretzel the front wheels but no problem at all plus they stayed completely true. Great hand built quality. The best carbon wheelsets in the market. Two thumbs up!

Unbreakable wheelsets!!!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These FiberX wheels have been awesome! I’ve had these for about a year and half now and the bearings and spoke tension are as good as they were new. You wouldn't believe the quality but I honestly believe these wheels may be the best on the market. I’m 215 pounds and I’ve cracked Enve and Santa Cruz wheelsets in the past but these have held up. The FiberX provides great damping on hard rocky trail conditions. Best carbon wheelsets on the market hand down.

Great Wheels

I have been banging around on these for a few months now and they are a true as they were when they came out of the box.
Not much chatter going around corners, so there is something to the Fiber X.
Hubs have a really fast engagement.

Fast and Smooth!!!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These X1 carbon wheelset that’s snappy, and durable all at the same time. I rode these for a couple of months on some pretty fast and rough tracks and found the wheel's ability to roll through these very impressive. The hubs have great engagement plus they’re smooth rolling. Love the silver fiber X streak. They look great!

Impressive Carbon Wheels

I am a stickler for attention to detail and the first thing I noticed was the box they ship them in is twice as thick as any other wheels I have received.
The Fiber-X (silver band in the middle) is eye catching, but what I noticed was the offset spokes. It seems like they did this to even the spoke tension creating the benefits of and assymetrical rim.
The hub has some fast engagement, but isn't really loud.
I mounted them up on my Santa Cruz and rode them on my favorite trail that has some nice rocky sections. I have broken a few hoops on this trail before, so it was a relief that the wheels took some abuse and are still straight. I ride at ~25psi and am 210 pounds, so there were a few instances where I kissed a few rocks on the rim.
These are some high end wheels and like the attention to detail they have engineered into the wheels. They even embossed their logo's into the sidewall, but blend in nicely until you get some dust from the trails on them.

Great wheelset!

So happy with the X1 carbon wheels. First thing I did was hit one of my favorite trails so I could feel the difference. Super strong bomb proof rim with a great smooth rolling hubs. Very happy with my purchase.

I'm a Believer

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm not usually one to fall for marketing buzzwords, but it seems there is actually something to this mysteriously named Fiber X. I have ridden these pretty much the entire season so far, on trails as wide ranging as Porcupine and Corner Canyon. These wheels possess a fine balance of durability and ride quality. They are stiff, track very well through nasty rocks, yet never beat me up. Every element of these wheels shows the level of thought and commitment that Mercury put into them. The hubs have impressively high engagement yet low drag. The asymmetric rim allows for more even spoke tension, which further enabled Mercury to maximize durability and stiffness while keeping the weight low. The stealthy embossed graphics on the rim also look great, while remaining low key.

Ride Quality is off the hook.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I mounted them up on my Spark Ultimate since it came with an "ok" set of DT Swiss alloy wheels. I tried to like the DT's but just didn't have a performance mentality.
I read about the new X1's on bikerumor and thought they would be interesting to try them out, if nothing less they look different.
First thing I noticed when I received them was the silver stripe and the offset spoke drilling. I read their marketing and didn't buy into it 100%, but the wheels matched what they were touting where the ride quality and performance were balanced to perfection. The hub is nicely machined and has a super quick engagement, but doesn't have too loud of a clikety.
On the way home form my inaugural ride, I cut through campus where there are some flights of stairs. Yep, I pulled a Danny McCaskill and rode down them with low air pressure (not brave enough to ride without a tire, plus I am not sponsored). I bottomed out a few times and didn't notice a scratch on the actual rim.
I have ridden them a few other times where I can tell I am climbing better and able to ascend a few technical sections I am usually not able to nail.
Now that the weather is nicer where I ride, I will be able to put more miles in.
