Description

Why We Like The X1 Enduro 29in Boost Wheelset

Over the past five years we've seen a lot of advancement in mountain bike technology. From refined carbon frames with dialed geometry, to more reliable and effective suspension components, we as riders all benefit from the technological progression of this sport. When it comes to wheels though, there's a small Utah-based company called Mercury that believes more can be done. Their X1 Enduro 29in Boost Wheelset ups the ante in the carbon fiber wheel game by incorporating an advanced composite material they've mysteriously dubbed Fiber-X. Possessing twice the tensile strength of high-modulus carbon fiber, Fiber-X's damping characteristics deliver a trail-tuned ride while increasing the durability and impact resistance of the rim. The result is a stronger wheel that rides better than the competition, allowing you to push your limits on the trail without worrying about your equipment.

The Fiber-X material is blended into the center of the rim, distinguished by the prominent silver stripe in between the carbon. The design works by using an optimized trapezoidal rim profile that funnels trail input into the tough elastic material, dissipating impact energy and avoiding rim failure during violent impacts. The design also dampens the trail in a way that provides riders with a more comfortable and controlled ride—all without sacrificing the lateral rigidity needed for a precise and responsive steering feel.

At the center of the X1 Enduro Wheelset is the new Axis hub system. These hubs use stiffness-boosting straight-pull spokes that are hand-laced to the rim by Mercury's expert wheel builders. The freehub uses a triple-stepped 6-pawl mechanism that delivers an impressive 3.5-degree engagement, putting the Axis hubs right up there with the best offerings on the market.

  • Innovative carbon composite wheels built for enduro abuse
  • Fiber-X material dissipates impact energy to avoid rim failure
  • Trail-tuned rim delivers a more comfortable and controlled ride
  • New Axis hubs offer responsive 3.5-degree engagement
  • 30mm internal width works well for modern trail rubber
  • Hand-laced, straight-pull spokes boost stiffness and durability
  • 1700g claimed weight is impressive for a burly carbon wheelset

Going on 13 months so far. I've had these wheels on 2 of my mountain bikes and have been really impressed with the performance and how well they hold up over time. They're very lightweight and stiff and hold a line really well through rocky technical single track terrain. Love them!

Follow-up On Review

Adding this picture of the damage to the wheel as it won't let me add it to the original review. To be clear, the tire was at 20 psi with a Cushcore Insert. A carbon rim should not fail on a singletrack like that.

I bought my Mercury X1 Carbon Enduro Wheelset late last summer after reading all the five star reviews and reading Mercury's "warranty dude"/ FreddyMercury's post below (scroll to Andrew's review thread on 3 Aug 2020) that said the crash replacement was around $125. Even sweeter, the wheels were on sale when I purchased them. I have been riding them 2 days a week for about 10 months until last week when I caught a rock with my rear wheel. They have held true and been reliable until now in moderate terrain. Damage was debatably my fault as I didn't check my tire pressure before the ride and the tire may have been a little low. I contacted Mercury to arrange a crash replacement and heard back from Don. Even with the supply chain a mess from COVID, they were able to work me a crash replacement. It wasn't the $125 that I had initially expected but Don went out of his way to support a customer and they got me a replacement at a price that was better than fair after some coordination.

A Real Review

It should have been a red flag to me when saw more reviews on this wheelset than any other on here or Backcountry. At that time though I didn’t know there was an affiliation. I purchased these wheels for my girlfriend’s enduro bike. She is beginner to intermediate, and since she is 135lbs geared I tried to find a carbon wheelset that would still be compliant. She rode them for a little under a year, until the rear just blew out on a single track one day. She does not jump or send drops. I emailed Mercury, and they had me send pictures. Based off of the pictures they told me it would be a crash replacement, which is $500 plus shipping. The damage did not happen because of a crash, pure and simple. On top of this, their warranty support hasn’t followed up with me on getting the replacement going. I am very disappointed that a company won’t back their product. I have a set of e13 carbon wheels I have put through the wringer and never had an issue with. I would steer clear of these wheels and go with a company that stands behind their products, which is most other mainstream companies.

Hey Cameron. Post a pic of the wheel. I would love to see the non crashed wheel damage. I also own a set of X1’s and a set of S5’s disc and haven’t had any issues the quality of mercury wheels. Yes, any carbon brand out there will fail if you run low tire pressure and crash. Go ahead and post the pic.

Hi Cameron, I am so sorry to hear about this experience. I'll send you an email to follow up on this

I bought these X1 a couple of months ago to replace my stock wheelset on my Niner and I can definitely say it was well worth the money. The wheelset is stiff but with nice damping and light. I love the quick engagement of the new hub.

I’m 210lbs and not easy on my bikes I’ve had them on my bike for about a year now. Light weight, very durable, stay true, look great, easily mount up tubeless and hands down the best upgrade to my Yeti. Yes I recommend them and have to many friends I ride with.

After putting these wheels through the paces the last few months I have nothing but praise for these. After riding these wheels for over 1100 miles on rough singletrack, I have found that these wheels are stiff and wide with quick engagement. The hand build on them is fantastic. I found myself trusting these much more than my previous Enve carbon wheel set. Love these wheels and would highly recommend them.

Awesome Upgrade!

Familiarity:

These X1’s made a great upgrade to my SC Tall Boy. Instant improvement in climbing and the bike feels perfect now. I’m 210lbs and not the smoothest rider out there. So far so good after about 10 months of steady hard riding. They dropped a good bit of weight from my bike and it’s noticeable. Very well built wheelset and haven’t had to true them at all.

Very happy with my X1 carbon wheelset as an upgrade to my DT factory wheels. These are very light and extremely durable. Super quick rear hub engagement. Running Maxxis Crossmark 2.25 tires and they ride great Over a 3100 miles on them so far with no issues. Get yourself a set and you won't be disappointed.

I’m very happy with these, I’ve Mountain biked every other day for over a month, in all types of terrain, and in different weather conditions, the rims are excellent, they feel wonderful, and hold up well to hard riding. This is definitely the best upgrade I’ve made.

Best Upgrade for Stock Wheels! - Edited

I bought these as an upgrade to my 2019 Stumpjumper ST. I upgraded the stock, alloy Specialized wheels, and tires (changed to Maxxis Forecaster/Ikon). Together, the upgraded wheels and tires shaved 5.2 lbs off the total weight of the bike. My bike went from a burly 35.2 lbs to a respectable 30.0 lbs, including pedals. Over the past 3 weeks I have ridden the new wheelset over 100 miles on dry, rocky trails in No. Utah and Idaho. There is a noticeable difference in my climbing speed. Downhill they are solid. The hubs have opened my eyes to the benefits of high-engagement. Ratcheting over technical sections is easy, and the near-instant power transfer during pedaling is really nice. I would highly recommend these wheels to anyone. EDIT: The day after posting my original review I broke my back rim on a local trail. The Mercury Wheels staff reached out to me and completely took care of the problem. In my case the rim couldn't be repaired and was quickly replaced. I was very impressed with their service. Thanks!

Hey Andrew- Sorry to hear this happened. I am the warranty dude for Mercury and wanted to personally reach out to you for a few reasons. 1. We would like to get you back rolling. 2. I am not sure where $500 came about, but we generally charge $125 to re-lace with your existing hub into a new hoop. 3. 3-4 weeks???? I think we can do better than that since we can spin up a new wheel for you in house. Feel free to reach out to me at warranty@mercurycycling.com Cheers, Freddy

The X1’s are light and ride surprisingly well. They're rigid but still have a flex when you want it. Tubeless setup was super easy. Also, love the quick engagement. Great purchase.

The X1 wheels are light and stiff but with nice damping effect. The engagement is right on. I ride very tech and find that the wheel track spot on. I have been riding these wheels for one year and they are still true. No issues at all. Highly recommend.

I’ve had these on my Niner for two seasons. These FiberX wheels have been great. They are stiff, track well through nasty rocks, yet never beat me up. The FiberX provides a nice damping effect. Great hub engagement with little drag. Great deal on this wheelset.
