Mercury Wheels is conveniently located just up the road from the Competitive Cyclist offices, so we've had the opportunity to spend some time putting its X1 Carbon Enduro 27.5in DT Swiss 240 Wheelset through the ringer on the local trail systems. We can attest that these rims are stiff and responsive with DT Swiss' venerable 240 hubs ensuring they roll fast and smooth no matter the terrain.

The rims are built with a hookless bead, which—contrary to what common sense might suggest—makes the rim-to-tire bead connection more reliable. Burping and tire blow-offs are actually more common with hooked rims, and hookless models also demonstrate improved tire retention. By eliminating the ridge of material constituting the hook, hookless beads also enjoy increased structural integrity, which is a definite plus when you consider that the X1 Carbon Enduro is built to handle the big hits of enduro and all-mountain riding. We've found that mounting some tire brands can be a little tricky, but once they're on, the bead holds a tubeless setup steady.

In addition to that hookless bead, Mercury employs a hefty 26mm internal rim width designed to support the wider tires preferred by today's enduro shredders. This wider rim lets the tire take on a fuller shape with straighter sidewalls than the light bulb associated with narrower rims, which in turn provides increased stability and more rubber on the ground at any given time. On the trail, this means better cornering and increased grip with the added bonus of fewer pinch flats compliments of that rounder shape.

  • A responsive wheelset designed for all-mountain terrain
  • Carbon fiber rim blends low weight and boosted stiffness
  • Hookless bead provides confident tubeless seal
  • Smooth, reliable, and responsive DT Swiss 240 hubs

Great wheels!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

High quality build! I have hammered them many times on rocks and they just keep going.

I've always heard that "carbon wheels are the best upgrade" and I never believed it, until now. I bought a set of X1's for my 2017 Anthem SX because my alloys were flexing too much at race pace. The almost "soft" rollover feeling of the X1's matched with the lateral stiffness makes for a buttery smooth ride with knife edge cornering! It's like my bike is on rails when slamming into corners now. I noticed such an extreme improvement in performance that I bought a pair for my 2016 Reign!
At the cranks and crafts Enduro race at big bear mountain I noticed a small crack in my rear rim. I sent a message to customer support and got a reply within the hour. Mike had me send a few pictures of the damaged rim and then he sent a call tag to have the wheel shipped back to the factory. A week later my rebuilt wheel with a brand new rim is in my hands! These are real riders making wheels for real riders and they stand behind their products.
I recently raced the Downieville Classic All Mountain World Championships on the Anthem and the wheels performed beyond expectations. I could feel them smoothing out the tons of rock hits on the famed "baby heads" trail and holding up to the punishing drops and high speed chunder bumps of the 15mile downhill. After two days of race pace punishment the wheels are straight as an arrow.
Take it from a guy who weighs 190lbs and hammers the downhills, these wheels are the business!!

Does this wheelset come with a SRAM XD driver body or Shimano?

Thanks,
Adam

This has a Shimano freehub body but if you need the SRAM we can probably make a swap for you.

Hi! I'm wondering what the drilling is on these rims. Is it 28 or 32-hole? And what kind of spokes are used for this build?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Hey Joe,

These are going to be a 28 hole rim with Sapim RACE spokes (double butted). Feel free to give a shout at my direct line 801.204.4547 if you have any questions on these or would like help placing an order! Cheers, Connor
