Having both the Mercury Wheels headquarters and some of the country's best trails just up the road from our offices is a convenient convergence of geography. It allows us to spend some time putting the X1 Carbon Enduro 27.5in Boost Wheelset through its paces on some pretty gnarly terrain. We can attest to the fact that these rims are stoutly stiff, in no small part due to the beefy Boost axle widths, which translates to snappy responsiveness on climbs and razor sharp tracking through root lattices and rock gardens.

The rims are built with a hookless bead, which—almost counterintuitively—makes the rim-to-tire bead connection more reliable for tubeless setups. Burping and tire blow-offs are actually more common with hooked rims, and the hookless models demonstrate improved tire retention on-trail. By eliminating the ridge of material constituting the hook, hookless beads also enjoy increased structural integrity—a definite plus when you consider that the X1 Carbon is built for the rigors of enduro violence. We have found that mounting some tire brands can be a little tricky, but once they're on, the bead holds a tubeless setup as confidently as any other manufacturer's.

  • A carbon wheelset built to handle all-mountain abuse
  • Hookless bead provides confident tubeless seal
  • Spoke count balances stiffness and weight
  • Boost axle width for responsive pedaling and braking
  • Includes tubeless tape and valves

Bomber wheels at a super price.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I’ve bee riding these for the last 9 months with no issues. A very nice hand-built wheelset at a great price. I highly recommend.

Drastic Improvement

I was on the fence between buying a new bike or upgrading my wheels. I decided to go with the wheels since my money tree in the back yard is taking a break this year.
My riding has drastically improved along with my confidence in the ascending and descending game.

    Long Term Review

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought a set of these wheels last April. I can't say that I am impressed. I have ridden them for 1.5 years now and have had numerous problems. The Mercury branded hubs are not very good. The first rear hub I had was constantly slipping and would not engage. I had them replace the freehub I think twice before I sent the entire wheel back to get the hub replaced entirely. Overall Mercury was willing to work with me and took care of me as best they could. The rear hub has been much better since they replaced it but it is starting to act up little. Getting loud pings as it engages, very similar to what was happening before it stopped engaging previously. The big issue now is that I am constantly breaking spokes. I am finally to the point where I am paying someone to re-lace the entire thing. I am also going to ditch the Mercury hub for a much more reliable DT Swiss hub. I do ride a fair bit but I also have other bikes that I split time on so I was hoping they would have lasted me much longer. After they replaced the hub and rebuilt it for me I think I have around 600 miles before I started having issues again. Overall pretty disappointed with them over the long term.

Thank you for that info! I was wondering why they were so cheap 65% off. Now I know why! Thanks for saving me a headache!

    Hi Kyle -

If your wheels still fall under warranty, why not give us a ring and give us the chance to square things away for you? It could be something simple that wouldn't require the purchase of a new hub. We're always happy to help!

These wheels have been awesome! Have had them for about a year now and the bearings and spoke tension are as good as they were new. For the price, you wouldn't believe the quality but I honestly believe these wheels may be the best on the market.

How many POE does the rear hub have?

That particular hub would come with a 27t ratchet ring and a 4 pawl free hub body

    Great 27.5 wheelset!

I've had these for 6 month and they're holding up great. Nice and light. Amazingly smooth and the hand built quality is unmatched. Huge fan of Mercury.

    Perfection at a great price!

I have been riding these for the last 4 months on very rocky and technical trails with no problems. They stay straight and true. Great hand built quality.
