Why We Like The S5 Disc Wheelset

The Mercury S5 Disc Wheels strike a fine balance between a lightweight climbing wheel and an aerodynamic race wheel, featuring a slightly shallower 50mm rim depth that's just as happy pedaling up a mountain pass as it is sprinting along flat tarmac and gently sloping roads.

  • Carbon fiber road wheels well-suited to all-around riding
  • Carbon layup finds the ideal balance of stiffness and compliance
  • 50mm rim depth offers aero gains without giving up versatility
  • Reliable Mercury sealed bearing hub with snappy engagement
  • Tubeless compatibility for increased grip and comfort
  • Hand-built in Utah by Mercury's expert wheel builders
  • Includes rim strips for a simple tubeless setup
  • Disc brake only, 12mm thru-axle hubs

What's the weight of these wheels

While Mercury doesn't publish the weight for these wheels, we've weighed them at 1670g with the HG freehub. That weight could be different depending on the freehub body and other changes to the specifications.

Great set of wheels. I use them as my daily wheelset, the 50mm depth is surprisingly very stable in crosswinds and very responsive in climbs. Hubs are buttery smooth. Very happy with my S5’s!

Wheels handle great in windy conditions. They look and roll great on my Trek. I've only ridden them about three weeks and am pretty pleased so far.

Bought this to fit onto my older Cervelo S3, really pleased, done about 2100 miles so far, so far so good. Good looking wheels with stealth decals. Very well made.

Good wheels, BUT Innaccurate Description

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

First off, these wheels come with a rim strip. If you’re going to run tubeless, throw it away and get some good tape. The reason is that the strip forms large dimples in the spoke holes after being under pressure, making it impossible to seat a tire if they’ve been used before (like if it goes flat and you need to reseat). Tape doesn’t stretch like that. But more importantly, the description here about the hubs is incorrect. They are FOUR pawl hubs, not 6 pawl as described. Is that noticeable? I don’t really know as I’m coming from 3-pawl, and they feel about the same. But I was expecting to feel a difference, I didn’t, and upon opening it up I found only 4 pawls. Still good wheels, light, well made, and true. But the description here should be updated, as it is incorrect.

* Extremely difficult to mount tubeless tires (by me and my local bike shop) * Mercury does not answer messages about tire compatibility or anything else. There doesn't appear to be anyone working there at least in customer service. The wheels themselves are ok for the money I guess. However, they're advertised as road tubeless and they are a complete pain in that regard. I bought Schwalbe pro one tubeless ready tires and had them mounted on the wheels by competitive cyclist and the front wheel deflated within three months. No problem right, just remount them? Nope. The fit between the tires and the wheels is just far too tight. I couldn't do it myself and when I took the wheel to my local bike shop they gave me the stink eye when I picked it up and said it was one of the most stubborn mounts they'd ever done. The tire mount is so tight it's impossible to get a regular tube mounted as well, so if you puncture on a ride you're calling an uber. The other wheel needed to be topped off with sealant but once I let the air out I couldn't get the tire to seal again. I'll probably just put a tube in now with a different tire. I've reached out to Mercury a few times to get guidance on tire selection but never hear back. I wouldn't be surprised if Competitive Cyclist had just purchased all their inventory a year or two ago and the company is no longer a going concern. So I regret buying these wheels. If I had it to do over again I would have purchased from a wheel company with a reputation and reviews. The inconvenience I've experienced with these wheels as well as the tube and tire I've had to purchase completely make up the dollar savings on the original purchase.

Trianon. I’m running schwalbe pro one 28c tubeless tires on my new S5’s without an issue. They went on easy and they ride great. There’s videos on YouTube that show you how to mount tires...check them out.

I bought these to replace my Ksyrium Pro's. From my ride data, I've increased my average speed by 0.5 mph, for the same routes. I can't with certainty attribute this to the wheels alone, but they sure feel faster, so much so, it actually feels as the wheel is pulling me along at speed. Being a heavier rider, the Ksyrium's after 4,000 total miles, would lose their trueness quite quickly after trueing and develop clicking noises on the first ride after. I'll update this review after logging similar miles.

Looking for a carbon gravel wheelset. Running 38mm tires.. are these wheels too narrow?

yes. the inner part of the rim is too narrow. You could mount them maybe but the tube would bulb out and you'd lose most of the aero advantage.

These S5’s disc wheels are just perfect. They are light as a feather and very fast. Hubs are buttery smooth. I can't explain how perfect these are. You will not find something with this quality for this price. Love them!

Logged a few hundred miles on these so far and they’ve been awesome. For the price, I honestly don’t think you can do any better than this wheel set. You can definitely feel any cross wind with these, but that’s probably the same with all these style rims. They seem very durable and I’m sure I’ll have them for a long time.

What tubeless tires (28c) are compatible with these wheels? Which would you recommend?

according to the enve website you wouldn't want to go wider than 25mm if you want the aero features. I have Schalbe pro one 25s though and the fit is horrible. avoid that.

I absolutely love these wheels! Mercury nails it with the S5’s. Great ride quality. Great craftsmanship. Just overall great product. Cuts through wind great and super light weight. Highly recommend.

What's the max psi for these wheels? Also, are they compatible with schwalbe pro tubeless tires, 28mm? I've been unsuccessful setting up so far.

Hi Jelena, Mercury says to follow the recommendation of the tire manufacturer for the max pressure. As for the Schwalbe Pro Tubeless tire compatibility? Those tires should mount up fine to these rims. These are hooked rims and don't have the potential compatibility issues that some hookless rims do. If you have any other questions, please reach out to me or any of the other Gearheads.

Lightweight wheels, fast, great power transfer, aero, quality hubs, nice price, tubeless compatible.

>Rating:

Can these wheels be used with regular clinchers and tubes as well?

yes. I've done this. it's a bit tighter to get them on the wheel but they work. may be tricky if you get a puncture on the road.
