Mercury Wheels might not enjoy quite the panache as some other carbon wheels in the game but the brand certainly has a strong racing pedigree that shouldn't go without mention. Members of Team Steylearts are in the trenches most weekends from September through January slogging through the European muck on its M3T Disc wheelset in search of cyclocross gold. In 2014, Eric Marcotte rocketed himself off of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee and win the 2014 US Pro National Championship ahead of who's who of professional road cyclists that call American soil home. With the M5C DT Swiss 240S Road Wheelset - Clincher, you'll get the perfect do-it-all depth carbon rim laced to what is pretty much the industry benchmark hub, the DT Swiss 240.

The model name, M5 gives you an idea of the depth the rims are packing. More specifically, they are 55mm deep. Rim width is the other critical measurement to know and the tale of the tape on the M5 is 24mm wide letting you get more volume in your tires so you can run lower PSI for a smoother ride that really lets you heel the bike over on fast descents and crit turns. Additionally, lower pressure tires have the ability to decrease rolling resistance and the additional rim width better matches the profile of a wider tire so the aerodynamic properties are preserved.

The construction of the M5's uses Mercury's Dual Carbon Layer Process or DLP. DLP blends high- and mid-moduli carbon fibers to balance between the lightweight and stiffness of the former and the fatigue-resistance and durability of the latter. DLP also involves the infusion of basalt fibers on the brake track to reduce heat build-up and increase stopping power. Managing heat is critical in a carbon clincher wheel especially on long descents and everyone can appreciate the increased stopping power which is a common complaint of carbon wheels.

The M5s are finished off with Sapim's popular CX-Ray spokes and alloy nipples. DT Swiss handles the spinning duties and the star ratchet provides reliable engagement when it's time to step on the gas. Durable bearings and tool-free service are just a few other features that define this hubset as a workhorse in the pro peloton. Stiff axles and proven hub geometry build up stiff and responsive wheelsets that feel solid under hard efforts and offer confident stability at speed.

The Mercury M5 Clincher Wheelset comes with a Shimano/SRAM 11-speed compatible freehub body and includes skewers, valve extenders, brake pads, and rim strips. Mercury backs up the wheels with a 2-year warranty.

What is the internal rim width? Also what is the wheelset weight? Thanks.

Awesome Wheelset!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have used these wheels for a season and have had zero issues. I have a Cervelo P3 and can tell a huge difference between the stock wheels. The 240 hubs are super smooth and roll forever. I would certainly considering buying another set or recommending to others.

These wheels have been outstanding. The stiffness is certainly there but you do not miss out on ride quality. I have found other deep dish rims can ride rather harsh but it has not been the case with the M5's A set that you can ride for hours on without feeling beat up.

Great Wheels - Tough, Light, and Fast!

The M5/240 are a great set of wheels that are incredibly versatile. The DT Swiss 240 freehub is extremely quiet -- so quiet that one rider riding beside me commented that he couldn't hear the ratchet at all. The quietness means you get very little vibration from the freehub. I use them for summer training and racing and they have held up extremely well. Great wheelset at a great value.
