The god of stealing races.

It's appropriate that Mercury Wheels' name and logo reference a Roman god who is the patron of, among other things, travelers and thieves. Atop Mercury's M5 Clincher Wheelset, Eric Marcotte journeyed from his day job in Arizona to Chattanooga, Tennessee to nab the 2014 US national championship ahead of the pros of the European peloton. It's the ultimate race wheel for the working cyclist.

If you're in the market for deep dish carbon rims, then you've probably already made the assumption that the number in the M5's name denotes a depth of 55mm. The rim's width is left out, though, and rim width is a big deal these days. The M5 is a solid 23.5mm wide, which means you can run lower PSI for a more comfortable ride that corners with unparalleled confidence. Wider rims also have some counter-intuitive effects when compared to those standard 19mm rims: they actually decrease rolling resistance and increase aerodynamics.

The M5s' construction uses Mercury's Dual Carbon Layer Process, or DLP. DLP blends high- and mid-moduli carbon fibers to tease out the best balance between the lightweight and stiffness of the former and the fatigue-resistance and durability of the latter. DLP has also recently been updated with a newly engineered brake track material, improving stopping power over the previous, basalt-infused design. This increased confidence goes a long way toward addressing the poor braking that is one of the most common critiques of carbon wheels.

The aerodynamic benefits of a deep dish rim are further complemented by Mercury's Seamless Transition Technology (STT), which integrates the brake strip with the rest of the rim in order to eliminate any obstructions to wind flow and reduce drag-causing turbulence. The result of this construction is a wheel that balances the above qualities with considerations of weight for what Mercury claims is its "most popular wheel by far."

The M5s are finished off with Sapim's indefatigable CX-Ray spokes and Mercury's own hubs. The rear hub includes a generous six pawls for an engagement that's as close to immediate as anything we've seen on the market today, and the front hub has an extra-wide 72mm flange for reduced flex under hard efforts and confident stability at speed. Both hubs have a 15mm axle that reduces to accommodate a traditional quick release and two and four oversized bearings in the front and back, respectively.

The Mercury M5 Clincher Wheelset comes with a Shimano/SRAM 11-speed compatible freehub body and includes skewers, valve extenders, brake pads, and rim strips.

  • Steal a march on the competition with carbon race wheels
  • Blend of carbon moduli to balance stiffness and strength
  • Brake tracks incorporate basalt fibers for better stopping
  • Integrated brake track reduces drag-inducing transitional ridges
  • Wide rims straighten allow lower PSI for smoother, faster ride
  • CX Ray Spokes and wide flanges for stiffer overall system
  • Includes a spare set of grey decals to match your team kit
  • Mercury Wheels proves you don't need to spend a fortune to race on carbon

Excellent wheelset!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The M5s are a excellent set of wheels. They handle very well, aren't twitchey in crosswinds, and I really like the depth for flat races or crits. The pads grip well with no braking issues. Great price and highly recommend them.

Fantastic Wheelset at Super Price

I picked these up 4 months ago and have used them as my everyday wheels for both training and racing. I've put over 1800 miles with no issues at all. Relatively light, stiff and fast too! The wheels are deep, but handle crosswinds and descents well. Thanks Mercury!

Just OK

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The brake track isn't very good. The pads constantly glazes over and squeal. I would not recommend or buy these again.

Have you angled the brake pads in? I haven't had any issues and am surprised at how quiet they are and how well they brake.

Love my M5C

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have a little over 800 miles on my M5's and can't complain. Super stiff and very durable. I've hit several pot holes and they stay true. Great on flats plus climb very well. Highly recommend. I'm a big fan of Mercury.

Love the Mercs!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've put over 1K miles on mine, no complaints at all. You will definitely feel strong crosswinds, but it's not debilitating, not much different than my Vision Tri 30s. The aero benefits of the M5s really kick in over about 20mph and in paceline groups. Unbelievable deal for the money.

Love the Mercs!

What's the weight limit on these wheels?

Hi Ruben,

The Mercury carbon wheels have a weight limit of 250lbs.

Mercury gives you wings!

I have Mercury wheels on my mountain bike that I had Competitive Cyclist build for me. They worked so well, I decided to get a set on my road bike. For the money, you can't go wrong.

They are incredibly fast and responsive! Quick acceleration, and once you're at speed, they roll fast for days! i was really impressed with the way they hold a line. Additionally, they do a great job of dampening vibration and chatter on the rough roads.

As others have mentioned, Mercury is a great company.. I called up and they were super friendly. They offered a tour of the operation, and I was very into what I saw.

I would defintely buy more Mercury Wheels when the time comes for another purchase. By the same token, I would recommend them to friends and anyone else looking for new wheels.

Last, but not least, I think they look pretty sick on my bike.

It's amazing how once they start spinning they don't want to stop. My first deep-dish wheelset and I'm amazed at how smooth they roll.

Amazing wheels!

I am a racer and was worried about having a strong enough carbon wheelset. I raced on the M5C's all year and they were great, stiff, and durable. Unmatched quality and highly recommend.

solid wheelset for those on the fence

I've put 3,000 miles on these. Not to be "that guy" but I take KOM's on strava with these on a '12 five series madone and I've won 2 sprint tri's recently within a competitive age group with clip on tri bars on the same bike/same mercury M5 wheels. Yes, a good deal of that is training, but my point is that these wheels have helped me do what I set out to do. Could a $3K instead of $1K wheelset have saved me a couple seconds? I don't know. you definitely need the new brake pads they came out with last year. they brake fine in the rain. A bit of sail from heavy side winds, but nothing that other 40-60MM wheels wouldn't do. 6'1, 190. I've run both 23 and 25 mm tires, but recommend the 25's. would prefer smaller decals, but such is life. ain't going to hold that against the marketing dept

    Great Quality and Value!

My first set of carbon wheels and they're awesome. Great for flats of coarse but also climb very well. They stay true and are fast. I would highly recommend these wheels to any serious roadie.

    Great so far

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

When I received these wheels the front wheel was out of true - not terribly - but enough to make me concerned. It was maybe 2mm out of true in one spot. It only took me a couple of minutes to get it trued up straight. I have put around 500 miles on them since and both wheels are still true and spin nicely. This being my first set of carbon clinchers, it took me several rides to fully appreciate what these wheels are capable of. If you ride under 16 mph you probably won't feel much of a difference between these and a decent set of alloy wheels. It's after you have put in some long miles on these and plunged a few long descents that you will begin to notice how smooth and aero they are. And once you get up above 16 mph for an extended period of time you will begin to notice the aero and inertia effect. It is subtle, but it is apparent. One thing to watch out for - I put these on an older Cervelo R3 and mounted some 25mm Continental GP4000sII tires on them. There was barely enough space under the front fork to accommodate this wheel/tire combo. In fact, the rubber that is always at the seam in the middle of the tread of a new tire was rubbing under the fork crown until it wore down. And in the rear there is maybe 2-3mm clearance between the seat tube and the rear tire. I dont' think this will be a concern on more modern frames, but anything 4-5+ years old might have trouble fitting these wheels with 25mm tires or larger. Not sure why this is - maybe the diameter of these is actually larger than an aluminum wheelset? But anyway, I think these wheels are well worth the price. The quality is nice and the braking is fantastic with the included pads. Just be sure to toe them in a bit and you won't get any squealing.

I am a Clydesdale standing at 6'5 and over 210lbs. I have a pair of zipp 404 and I don't feel that they are any better than the m5's. I am able to climb with them, use them in crits and train with them. I love these wheels and will buy from Mercury again.

I've got a set of M3s on my 2011 Cervelo R3 Team with 700 x 25 clincher tires (love em) but a 28 would not work because the forks are narrow. Will the M5s fit on my bike with 700 x 25 tires?

From what I understand, many of the less recent Cervelos would not fit a 25mm tires, especially with the wider profile rim. Unfortunately you may be stuck running 23mm tires with that combination that you have. If you are looking for a smoother ride you may want to look at some tires that have a softer casing, like a Vittoria tire with a 320 TPI casing, that will allow the tire to compress more easily.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

See my review above. Yes they will fit with 25mm tires - I have the same frame and it is tight but it works!

    Best Wheelset Ever!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love my Mercury wheels. They ride great in the flats, climb well, have excellent cornering and do great in the wind. They are fantastic all around wheel set.

    Great wheelset - Fantastic Value

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have about 4200 miles on these with no issues whatsoever. As soon as I put these wheels on my bike I saw an increase in my average speed. The wheels are deep, but handle crosswinds and descents well. These wheels exceeded my expectations and I would definitely buy Mercury wheels again.

    hi Roger
    Thank you for the review
    I have small question
Can the brand stickers can be peeled off?

The branding is not easily removed. It's more than just a sticker - feels like paint.

my new M5's came with white vinyl decals that I peeled off. My wheels came with extra gray decals that I put on.

Although i not personally sponsored, our team has a different sponsor for wheels. Trying to respect that by buying a set that can be unbranded...

Super happy I pulled the trigger!

I had some initial concerns about the wheels because they arrived out of true, but Competitive Cyclist customer service was fantastic as usual. After a quick truing at my LBS, they have been rock solid even through some pretty nasty pot holes. I went really easy on descents at first because it took a few weeks to really trust the brake pads/tracks - you can smell the pads burn on longer descents but after a few months of regular riding, I honestly think these break as well or even better than my previous aluminum-track rims. Haven't ridden in rain, but in heavy fog they stop perfectly as well. Quick wheels at an unbeatable price. Decals are also removable so I peeled mine off for the stealth look.

Super happy I pulled the trigger!

      hi Matt
      Thank you for the review
      I have a small question
DO the brand decals can be peeled off?

Yes I was able to peel the decals right off - they are attached on top of the matte finish on the wheels so it was very easy to remove with my hands. Did not need any additional tools.

      Great investment.

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great improvement for my bike rides. Easily accelerate and maintain speeds. Breaking squeaks when the break pad is dirty but can easily be clean with a can of air. Overall a solid performer and nicely built.

I'm not a fast rider but with this wheel I've seen my average speed increased as much as 2 MPH and shaving off my PR by 30s to 1min. Very happy with the performance increase specially with the price I paid.

      Fast wheels!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I own a couple of sets of carbons wheels from other brands and wanted something new for my Pinarello. So I pulled the trigger on these Mercury M5's and couldn't be happier. Very stiff wheels with no issues at all. Well worth the investment. Huge fan of Mercury hand built wheels.

      What a wheelset!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have over 1700 miles on them with zero issues. Super high build quality! Highly recommend!

      Mercury M5 Wheels

I've owned these wheels for a year now and and extremely pleased that I bought them. They have proven to be extremely durable and handle extremely well in windy conditions. They are better than the HED's I owned previously. I've been out on days with winds better than 25 mph and have not been swayed from one side of the road to the other. The braking is very good and the brake pads seem to be holding up very well. I am very pleased with my purchase and would recommend them to anyone who is looking to upgrade their wheel set. For the price that I payed for them they are worth every penny.
