Description

Designed for the long haul.

Bumpy gravel roads, light-duty singletrack, and tours across state lines call for a stout and supportive wheelset that's wide enough for running larger rubber, yet light and snappy when you're hammering up climbs and pedaling across miles of countryside. Designed for this very purpose, the Mercury G1 Carbon Disc Wheelset offers a superb balance of rolling efficiency, proven strength, and high-volume support for gravel exploration, bikepacking adventures, and long-distance tours.

Sitting at a whopping 30-millimeters across (external width), the G1 Carbon Disc Wheelset supports higher volume tires in the neighborhood of 35 to 40-millimeters across, give or take a few millimeters for your riding preferences. Tubeless-ready rims allow you to drop the pressure of wider tires, in turn lending a smooth and supple sensation across rough roads and gravel surfaces. Ultimately, this means you'll conserve energy without the fatiguing feel of jarring bumps and excess vibration you've become accustomed to with gravel road exploration.

Carbon construction maximizes stiffness, meaning you'll feel its snappy acceleration the instant you step on the gas. It's also stronger than its aluminum counterparts, ensuring longevity when you inevitably thrash 'em over jarring roads and unpaved surfaces. The G1 Carbon Disc Wheelset is designed for disc brakes and thru-axles, but is also adaptable to a front quick-release skewer, making it a great choice for a modern gravel world where no "standard" is ever really standard. Plus, its disc brake-compatibility means you won't have to worry about the loss in braking composure normally associated with a carbon road wheelset.

  • Stout and supportive hoops for gravel exploration
  • Carbon construction maximizes stiffness and strength
  • 30mm rim width for running larger tires of 35 to 40mm

  • Mercury hubs sourced from mountain bike wheels ensure longevity
  • 24 Sapim double-butted spokes for low weight, reliable strength
  • Works with the disc brakes and thru-axles of modern gravel rigs
  • Converts to SRAM XD with Mercury's XD freehub body

Impressive!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

One year in at over 2000 miles and no issues at all. I have some 42c mounted on them and they feel good. Highly recommend.

Pelplexed

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had this wheelset for nearly two years now and have put close to 2.5k miles on them. I use this set for gravel road racing and training. I am 160 lbs. and competitive but do not beat up my hardware.

So far I have had two random rear wheel spokes go ping, one cost me a move up the podium when I had to stop and tuck it in. The last one was just yesterday on a training ride. Given the fact that these are carefully crafted, hand built wheels I'm perplexed by this.

After the first break I called Mercury to make sure I got identical replacement spokes, made the fix then made sure all were properly tensioned and adjusted as needed with a meter.

I thought the first was a fluke but now I am wondering if there is something else going on.
I'm not reading of any other spoke issues so to reiterate, I'm perplexed. If I have another break I'll be in touch with Mercury .

For years I've stuck with straight pull only spokes in my wheels and have had NO issues. When I read about these I thought it sounded like a good chance to try j bend again. So far I'm not feel'n the love.

Great Deal!

Purchased a set of these wheels initially for a 50 mile gravel race. I am 200 pounds and put a lot of pressure on wheels and have had issues in the past with wheels not holding up. These wheels are amazingly light and tough as nails. Great product totally worth the money.

seem good so far

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I haven't put a ton of miles on these yet (maybe 120-150) but so far they seem to work well. I got these to be able to quickly swap out a gravel wheelset for a my road wheelset (which are also a carbon Mercury, which I love) I don't feel as though I have lost anything by useing these wheels with my gravel tires vs. my gravel tires on my road Mercury wheels, so that must mean something.

Great upgrade!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Very happy with this new carbon wheelset as an upgrade to my factory wheels. These G1’s are very light and extremely durable. Over a 2100 miles on them with no issues. Straight as the day I pulled them out of the box. Great job mercury.

Awesome wheelsets!

1 year and counting. Lightweight and snappy right out of the box.
I have some Hutch 42c tires mounted to them and they fit great. I've ridden through some very muddy and nasty conditions and the bearings still feel smooth. I was a little worried about the limited spokes on the rear but it has held up to my 190Ibs just fine. Highly recommend.

Great Gravel wheelset!

Coming up on one year on my G1’s and everything is good. Smooth rolling and they take a beating. Two thumbs up.

Does this wheel have a max rider weight?

Hi Tim, Mercury has recommended to us a max rider weight of 220lb for these wheels.

Love my G1’s!

Wow! Great wheelset at a great price. Over a 1200 miles on them with no issues. Super sturdy, light and very well built. I’ve been running 40mm tires and they’re good. Happy with my purchase.

Loving them a year in, but beware!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

At least for the set I bought, their hubs were the old style (T model, not their 2018 hubs), which meant that I had to get a more expensive/older (???) version of Mercury's XD body to upgrade. This model wasn't on Competitive Cyclist, so I had no idea it existed. I bought the XD driver on here, it didn't fit, then went on to discover the other model on Mercury's site.

TLDR: make sure you check the model # on the side of the hub: if it starts with a T, I'd contact Mercury to make sure you get the right XD driver.

Apart from this confusion, I've used these with 42mm gravel tires and 28mm road tires and they perform flawlessly in both cases. Absolutely love these things.

Mercury Gravel G1’s!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The wheels are a big change from the Easton set. Lighter, wider and feel more responsive. Good hubs. Tubeless set up was very easy. Tough as nails and they stay true. Highly recommend.

MTB- Cross Country and Gravel

I bought these originally for my Scott Spark 710 (Cross country whip) for a much needed upgrade from the syncros wheels that came on it. I could navigate over a few uphill rocky section due to the performance of the rim and the 7 degree engagement in the hub.
Since the trails are a mess at this time of year, I decided to mount a set of panaracer GK's and roll them on my gravel bike. I am not really a strava nerd, but I have noticed my times and speed improving.

    Great Wheelset

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Have put quite a few different rides on this wheelset, and it ticks all my boxes so far: light, responsive, takes abuse, stays true, no issues to speak of. The only thing left is a long-term review of the hub/bearings, but that will be another 6 months out.

    Sweet Gravel wheels!

Couldn’t be more impressed with my G1’s. The wheels are light and very durable. Well done Mercury.

    Fast and Fun

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Lightweight and snappy! While getting out of the saddle for a punchy climb you're rewarded with a burst of quickness, makes you want to charge up and over anything that lies in the way.
I have some WTB 42 c tires mounted to them and they fit great, although I wish my frame could fit some 50s. With the weight that I saved with the wheels I feel pushing the larger tires wouldn't be too much harder and I feel that they would fit great.
I've ridden through some nasty conditions and the bearings still feel good. I was worried about the limited spokes on the rear but it has held up to my 175lbs just fine and that has been on some rugged terrain.
Only small complaint would be the decals but they came off easily and Mercury said they'd be willing to send some replacements.
    GREAT WHEELS!

    Love my new G1 wheels!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought these about 5 months ago for my gravel bike and have put over 800 miles on these with no issues. Have been running 40c tires on them and they've been great. Super light with a very smooth hubset. Great job Mercury.

    Wow!

Wheels arrived on a Friday afternoon, I got them ready for a cyclocross race the following morning (I know, you're not supposed to make big changes the day before a race). First thing I noticed was the width, these things are wide! 31mm Vittoria Cross XG tires barely go past the sides of the rim. Calipers measure them 35.5mm with 30psi. Cornering was much better than any wheels I'd used for 'cross. Switching the front for 15mm t/a was simple. Wheels are nice and light. Only complaint is that the valves are just barely long enough, another 10mm would be nice. Hard to get sealant in with the injector, the head doesn't have enough valve to sit on. My only question now is, how are these so cheap?? Can't wait to do a longer gravel ride with 38mm tires, should be super plush.

      Wow!

Considering the Mercury G1 wheels for a build but see the Mercury site says min tire recommendation is 35mm. Anyone use these with a smaller tire? Thinking of using a 28mm.

I have 31mm Vittorias set up (see photo). Raced on them with no issues.

I used 28mm, no problem. The only issue is getting the tire mounted. I've never had rim so difficult to mount a tire on.

Designed for the long haul is right! These preformed flawlessly, the lightweight rim and build helped out so much. Trained with some klunker wheels and it was a great idea. When I jumped on these wheels, it felt like there was zero resistance.

Unfortunately I took a spill trying to pass in a sketchy section and I wasn't feeling too hot but the bike and wheels held up strong.

Zero complaints and would recommend them to anyone looking for speed and quality at a killer price!
