Why We Like The Minion SS EXO/TR Tire

Maxxis has years of car and motorcycle racing to draw from when designing tires, and we like what we're seeing with the Minion SS EXO/TR Tire. Bridging the space between speedy, low-profile cross-country tires and burly downhill tires, the Maxxis Minion SS EXO/TR 29-in Tire features a mixed knob profile that combines the best of both worlds to add an epic touch to any enduro ride. Short, ramped knobs line the middle of the tire to roll fast, while the same fat side knobs found on the original downhill Minion grip hard through corners and over loose trails.

Great Tire for a Specific Riding Style

I've put it through the wringer

If you're the type of rider that rad slides into loose turns, this tire is for you! I don't ride to race, I ride to have a good time and this tire delivers the goods. Foot out flat out into turns, dig those side knobs in, and let off the brake and it hooks up like any other tire in the Minion family. It also climbs surprisingly well in sand or rock but not so much in loose over hard conditions.

Good Rear Tire, Wanted to Love It

I've put it through the wringer

I'm running this as a rear tire on my Yeti SB5.5 on some Raceface Aeffect-R wheels with a 30mm internal rim width. I love the profile of the tire with the wider rim, but probably wouldn't want it on a rim any wider than what I have now. I primarily ride in Park City, Utah where trails are flowy, dry, and fast and down in techy southern Utah desert (Moab, St George, etc). I really, really wanted to love this tire. I ran a Specialized semi slick (Slaughter tire I believe) and loved it, but am not sold on the Minion SS. Durability is definitely called into question, I sliced it open on one of my first rides on it (I can be notoriously harsh on my tires), but threw a patch on it on the inside and we're back at it. It also doesn't have the braking power I need. The SB5.5 is fast and the Guide brakes I'm running with it are powerful - I need a tire that isn't going to slid when I need to slow down quick. Ok, with the downsides of the tire out to dry, lets talk positives! The side knobs on this are really nice. Can just rail berms and no hesitation linking up quick turns with it. It is really fast rolling. If you wanted a fast rolling tire with more bite when you plan on rippin' into a corner, this could be a great option. I know people who choose to run something like an Ikon (bleh) or Ardent Race tire even when just trail riding, this would be a great aggressive alternative. Following up on this - Currently have 450 miles on the bike and starting to see more and more wear on the side nobs especially. While there's still not a ton of braking power behind it, I've figured out how to ride it better - just brake less! While I'm only semi joking on that, I would purchase this tire again.

Downgrading my previous review

I've put it through the wringer

So the tires rode great right out of the start. However, they durability on these tires is pretty poor. Due to an injury this summer I probably have less that 150 miles on these and I have side knobs that are separating from the tire in a bad way. I've talked with a few other friends who have had the same issue. I know it's a relatively new tire design for Maxxis and hopefully they get it right going forward. As of right now, I would not repurchase.

Nice tire.

I've used it several times

Running this on the rear of my SC tallboy. Seems to roll very well, but provides good traction and good cornering feel. Only used in dry conditions so far. Very easy to set up tubeless.

Great Rear Tire

I've put it through the wringer

I love this tire. It rolls exceptionally well and gives you the grip you need when cornering. I'm running this on my Pivot 429c. It's definitely for dry conditions and I wouldn't run it as a front tire. Highly recommend giving this a try.

Best Dry Tire

I've put it through the wringer

I have this tire as the rear on both of my bikes. I'm running it on a 26mm internal width rim on my trail bike, and you can see that review under the 27.5 version. On my 29er, I'm running a much narrower rim, and the tire profile is definitely different. Still great, but different. I find the side knobs are a bit more rounded over with the narrower rim, changing the cornering characteristics of this tire slightly. If you want a fast dry conditions tire that can really rail corners, this would be a great option.
