Maybe you spent the last five years in hermetic isolation, but if you didn't, you doubtlessly noticed that "wider" is the new "carbon" in the mountain bike wheel world. Maxxis is embracing this trend — and slightly changing the game in the process — with its new Minion DHR II Wide Trail 3C/EXO/TR 27.5in Tire. Despite its name, the DHR Wide isn't actually wider than the original Minion, but it does feature a tweaked tread pattern that's designed to offer better grip when mounted on wider rims.

By slightly changing the location and orientation of the knobs, Maxxis was able to direct cornering force into the edge knobs at smaller lean angles, so you get the killer grip of the classic Minion without having to lay your wide-rimmed ride all the way down and risk washing out — a distinct possibility with traditional tires mounted on wide rims.

The tread isn't the only part of the Minion DHR designed to improve traction. It's tubeless ready, so you can run it at lower pressures to improve grip, and comes in both 3C Maxx Grip and 3C Maxx Terra editions, the former of which is harder and more trail-friendly than the softer, DH-crushing latter.

Both tires feature Maxxis' EXO casing, which is pliable but made to take a rocky beating so you don't fight flats on sharp and rocky trails. The DHR is also most comfortable on hard, loose, and firm trails, while its brother the DHF is more of a mud-friendly tire.

    Knobby, grippy, traction

    The DHF\DHR combination of tires is a go-to for many people for good reason. The amount of grip and traction is pretty ridiculous. I swapped out my XC IKON tires due to losing traction on the trails. These new tires were used on everything from beginner level smooth trails to more advanced, leaf covered chunky descents with rocks, roots and sweeping berms. The tires have great grip and I found my speed on the downhills has improved from the increased confidence from the traction. Climbing with the DHR on the back is pretty amazing. The amount of traction available is great. Obviously the extra knobby set up will affect rolling resistance. I wouldn't want these on my bike if I had a long XC trail planned but, my overall time at the local trails has improved due to being about to stay off the brakes on the downhills and corners. If you ride more XC \ smooth trails then, you might consider a less knobby setup. If you are riding a good amount of gnarly\technical trails with good downhill sections then, this is a great option and the cost is good too. If you are doing a lot of downhill, this is a no-brainer.

    Great rear tire

    Nobody can maxxis quality or reliability. This the perfect rear tire for everything from loose desert riding to high speed bike parks. Decent rolling effeciency given the size of the nobs, and all kinds of braking traction. This is my go-to rear tire.

    Great braking and cornering

    Great braking, cornering and it feels faster rolling than the DHF. The downside is that the EXO sidewalls in my opinion are not up to task for Enduro, Bike Park or clydesdale use and this tire is not offered in a Wide Trail Double Down configuration just yet. Plenty of tread left but the sidewalls give me pause and a .5" tear from a rock garden made me realize the EXO casing is not up to task for really aggressive riding.

    LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!

    I've worn out a couple sets of these now, and I just can't really come up with any negatives (based on how I ride). Sure they are not the fastest rolling tire out there, but I'm much more interested in not falling down, and these tires grip like nothing I've ever experienced. The DHR/DHF Combination is pretty hard to beat!

    Brakes

    Love this tire, I had the DHF 2.5 on front but switched to this tire to save weight. I run the 2.3 as my front and an ikon 2.35 as my rear on my 27.5 Nomad. Reason why I was attracted to this tire was because of the braking capabilities. Since I run an XC tire in the rear, I need something outstanding at braking in front to make up for the lack in the rear. This tire does that exactly.

    The width is no where near a 2.4 on Easton ARK30 wheel as the star says . "Straight up Sucks" no traction to be found in the least . Even with low air pressure and the soft compound........ Waste of money in my eyes

    Great tire

    For the rear of the bike. Not a fan of these as a front (don't like the feel of them before getting onto the side knobs.) However, I can't think of another tire I'd want in the rear. Great braking traction and awesome cornering knobs.

    Amazing

    I haven't been on Maxxis tires in years, but oh my these are amazing. The WTB I came from are great in the CA conditions, but out here, I seemed to get flats every ride due to the thin sidewall. I picked these up and was blown away. Yes, I have used Maxxis in the past, but the wider tread with a wide carbon wheel, helps you feel like you are glued to the soil. Amazing tires, you won't regret picking up a pair

    MINION!

    I bought is tire for my Industry Nine 245 wheels. I wanted to test the WT technology. Although the ID is 24.5mm this WT rode great. At first I was using this tire on the front and I didn't like it at all, cornering was horrible. I swapped it to the rear and it worked great! Fast rolling and great side wall protection! I would however recommend having a ID rim of 26mm or more too maximize the full potential of this tire.

    Tacky Tough Tread

    Threw this as my rear tire on my Mojo 3. The wheelset I have on the Mojo 3 is the Ibis 742's which have a 41mm outer / 35mm inner rim width, pretty much the ideal rim that these tires were designed for. Pros: - Sticky rubber grabs everything and you have fantastic traction. This handles well in the looser conditions, but i've ridden it in XC flow trails and heftier chunk, does well in all. -Traction uphill, especially as its designed around a wider rim. You can run a lower PSI and crawl up the steepest of slopes or slabs. - As with the DHF, the tire feels soft, but its held up well. I am hard on my tires and tend to beat up the sidewalls, especially rear tires. This has held up well so far! Cons: - Definitely not a fast rolling tire. You can trust it ripping around corners, but if they came out with a wider profile 2.4" Minion SS I would hop on that in a second. If you have any questions of whether this tire would be great for your bike or what to pair it with, don't hesitate reaching out directly to me!

    Sweeeeeet Tire

    This tire is awesome. Made for wide rims, but I mounted it to my Mercury X1s with a 26mm ID and they are great on those as well. Basically the difference compared to a traditional Minion of the same size is just that the profile is more round. Since I pedal up hill on most of my rides this is fine by me, and when cornering I haven't experienced any lack of traction it is still great. I paired this with a DHF Minion WT 2.5 up front and it's a great combo. Just light enough to tolerate for long XC rides with zero compromises on the downhill.

    I have the ibis 741's; had conti trail kings and moved to these for recent trip. This tire is night and day compared to conti's. The conti's always had some slip at the edge of the tire but this tire never gave up any grip. Love this tire and held up well on the rocks of moab/fruita

    I bought this same tire in the 2.3 standard version at the beginning of the season. I'm running a 26mm internal rim Mercury X1 carbon, and felt as though the tire was a bit squirly leaning into looser corners. I bought the WT version for increased volume, and improved tire profile, and have been very impressed. I rode one trail where I distinctly noticed the tire squirm in a corner, and it handled marvelously. After a long weekend riding in southern Utah, I'm hooked on the WT DHR II!
