Low profile tires might roll fast in the right circumstances, but the one constant in mountain biking is that conditions constantly change. That's where this race-ready, 2.2in-wide Maxxis Ikon EXO Tubeless Ready Tire comes into play.

It's a lightweight, tubeless-ready tire that mixes biting knobs with three rubber compounds to create a truly versatile tire. The Ikon uses a 120tpi casing with EXO protection. What's this? Well, EXO protection consists of added pinch flat and abrasion protection at the sidewall for an enhanced resistance to cuts. Even better, it does this with overloading the tire with bulk.

The casing is then wrapped in a tread pattern that favors both buff and loamy conditions. This is possible due to the spacing between the center lugs and the raised side knobs. Those center lugs are also ramped to resist folding under braking and acceleration. However, the 3C compound is what really allows this tire to bridge the traction gap from packed to loose.

Maxxis made the center knobs from a harder compound. So, it resists wear and flex in the knobs. The supple casing, however, allows it to conform to irregularities, and it also permits the softer side compound to grab. As a result, you gain a positive traction over wet roots and rocks. Also, as a three compound tire, the transitions from straightaways to turns are utterly seamless.

The Maxxis Ikon EXO Tubeless Ready 29in Tire is UST compatible and is available in a 2.2-inch width.

I'm dumb. Maxxis Ikons are not.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was flyin down the highway with my bike strapped to my hitch rack...or so I thought. I hit a bump and the rear wheel hopped out of the tray (front wheel still locked in) and next thing I know I was dragging my pride and joy down the road at a steady clip of 65mph. I pulled over to inspect the results of my lack of brain cells, literally expecting the worst. Low and behold, a small worn section of tread on the rear Ikon was the only damage I could find. It was still holding air. I was SHOCKED, but it gets better. I was able to meet up and ride with the boys... I even PR'd 5 segments!

great gravel road tire

can't speak to the longevity of these at this point, however they seem to roll really well in gravel road conditions. Feel confident enough in some sketchy situations, although I wouldn't push it in very loose conditions. I also run these at very high PSI (60-70) so I'm sure they would grip better at a lower PSI

I found them more strenuous to ride and therefore replaced them and enjoying a smooth ride in the trails. Just my two cents.

Maxxis for Life

I've ridden numerous tires while racing XC, and these are my favorite hands down. Paired with the Ardent up front, they rip and rally through all corners and keep you on the dirt, rubberside down. Fast rolling, grippy, and strong tires make this one of my go to's!

Fast, not durable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These tires roll fast, and as long as you're aware of their limitations, will be great for XC racing. I've used them to train, and race, Park City Point to Point... and went through *several* rear tires, but luckily not during the race.

I'm rolling the Enve M50 wheel, which is 21mm internal width. This is possibly the cause of the pinch flats I've been getting with this tire (also destroyed an Ardent race 2.2), but I've also ruined two ikons in the *center* of the tread, on some not-so-aggressive rocks that I would have not even considered on my more brappy trail bike.

Also worth noting that the ikon 2.2 is very different from the 2.3 in my experience, almost a different tire.


Rolls fast!


The tread is minimal, and doesn't bite on loose dirt at all, but that's expected from a fast rolling XC tire.

Easily destroyed - know its limitations before racing on it. You will likely have to roll more air pressure than you're used to, in order to avoid pinch flats.

Speedy McSpeedface

The Ikon tire hits the sweet spot for fast rolling without giving up too much traction. Faster than the Ardent Race without giving up a ton of grip. I love these tires for early and late season riding, but when the mid-season moondust is everywhere to be found I like to go with something a little more aggressive like the Ardent, at least for a front tire. No issues with durability on my end. I feel like I have abused them beyond my expectations and they have not let me down.

Extra sidewall protection is a huge plus

I run this tire on my rear wheel for xc/endurance riding and really like how it rolls and grips. The extra sidewall protection gives me the peace of mind during my long rides and enables me to rip through rock gardens like I'm on an enduro bike. I would either pair this with an Ardent Race on the front wheel or go full out and get Ikons on both the front and the back.

Good, fast-rolling tire

The Maxxis Icon Exo Tubless tire is a solid choice if you're looking to go far at a good clip, especially if there are stretches of hard ground or even pavement. They are reasonably durable, though I did cut a sidewall on one recently, but that was after hundreds of worry-free miles.

On trails the grip is good for how well the tire rolls. I've really enjoyed it on the buff trails around Park City.

Great tire

I have use it on the front tubeless; it has a low rolling resistance, great grip and durability, I have not had a flat tire.

Rear tire only.

These are great for tacky and consistent surfaces as a rear tire. The EXO protection is the best in the business from what I have found. They have low rolling resistance but aren't the best when surfaces get loose.

Great rear tire

Fast-rolling, lightweight, high volume tire. I mounted this 2.35" tire on my hardtail's rear Roval Fattie SL rim and it is performing extremely well. Good traction, fast rolling, and enough volume to confidently run at 25 psi.
