Just about every tire manufacturer has some sort of low profile tire for 'hard packed conditions.' And while those tires might roll fast in the right circumstances, the one constant in mountain biking is that conditions are constantly changing. That's where this race-ready, 2.2in-wide Maxxis Icon EXO Tire comes into play.

It's a lightweight tire that mixes plenty of biting knobs with three rubber compounds to create a truly versatile tire. The Icon uses a 120tpi casing with EXO protection. What's this? Well, EXO protection consists of added pinch flat and abrasion protection at the sidewall for an enhanced resistance to cuts. Even better, it does this with overloading the tire with bulk.

The casing is then wrapped in a tread pattern that favors both buff and loamy conditions. This is possible due to the spacing between the center lugs and the raised side knobs. Those center lugs are also ramped to resist folding under braking and acceleration. However, the 3C compound is what really allows this tire to bridge the traction gap from packed to loose.

Maxxis made the center knobs from a harder compound. So, it resists wear and flex in the knobs. The supple casing, however, allows it to conform to irregularities, and it also permits the softer side compound to grab. As a result, you gain a positive traction over wet roots and rocks. Also, as a three compound tire, the transitions from straightaways to turns are utterly seamless.

All Arounder

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Using it on my XC race bike, front and rear, race day and training. Sets up tubeless with ease. Great all around tire. Lightweight with good volume that wears nicely.

This isn't a tubeless version and doesn't set up tubeless with ease (even w/ a compressor). The Tubeless ready versions will set up tubeless.

Works great in Virginia!

Used these on the front & back for a few races/rides & they hold up amazingly well. The tread looks minimal but the tire really hooks up well in everything other than deep mud. If you want a little more front end bite, put on the Ardent. Maxxis is the ticket for me.

Great Tire for NorCal riding

I've ridden quite a few different types of conditions with this tire (Sand, Loose on hardpack, Hardpack, Wet (not muddy). As a rear tire, it is the fastest tire I've ridden. I have it setup tubless. Seems durable with over 300 miles so far on it. I did have the air to low and came up short on a gap and put a tiny hole in the side wall which I've patched. Overall, I love this tire. I'm 220lb pack and all and ride AM/XC quite a bit with a few hits here an there on the more Freeride style trails.

Perfect for UT

    I have been running this tire for a couple months on the rear of my Santa Cruz TBLTc. Not just a race tire by any means, although I would run one on my race bike as well. The profile is deceiving, it grips very well on the "dirt" we have in UT, whether you're riding around SLC/PC or down south in St. George. However, it might be a little under gunned for the super rocky technical terrain in Moab. It will break loose while cornering hard, but in a very predictable controllable way. I haven't had these wear any quicker than other tires I've run in the rear. Will be buying another one.

    Great race tire

      These tires as described are low profile and fast rolling. They have more volume then other race tires and the EXO sidewall gives it some extra strength in the sidewall. I've ripped through two small block 8s sidewalls in 2 months and haven't had a problem with these sidewalls. This is a popular tire in Utah.

      I installed this tire on the rear of my Full Suspension XC Mountain Bike. I found it to be very fast rolling with excellent grip for cornering. For dry/dusty conditions the tire has good braking performance. In wet conditions it can pack up but clears easily. I found the wear to be pretty good, this is a dual compound tire so the center is a harder compound than the cornering lugs. That means it will endure hard braking without premature wear. I will add, looking at this tread pattern I was doubtful but riding it has made me a believer.

      I would recommend this tire as a rear tire, it rolls well and mine has lasted longer than the 6 weeks claimed by SGL. The EXO sidewall definitely makes this a durable tire, at least compared to other tires I would run. If you're going from a softer sidewall tire like a Schwalbe, be prepared to run 5psi less. Currently running a 2.35/2.2 Ikon EXO combo, but I think I'll go back to a Schwalbe for the front..

      I have now gone through two of these. In both cases the tire blistered after only a couple months of riding. I spoke to my local bike shop and they have seen the same. Maxxis will not replace them. The tire performs well, but the lack of Maxxis to stand behind the product is a problem. I will not buy Maxxis products
