Low profile tires are the go-to if you know without a doubt that the trail conditions won't change, but the two things you can count on out there are unpredictable surfaces and the potential for any sort of weather. That's where the race-ready 29in Maxxis Ikon 3C/TR Tire comes out to play. Built to roll fast while providing excellent grip across conditions ranging from hardpack to loose dirt, these tires can handle myriad conditions over the course of a ride.

This lightweight, tubeless-ready tire mixes biting knobs with three rubber compounds to create a truly versatile profile. The supple 120 TPI casing is wrapped in a tread pattern that favors both buff and loamy conditions with moderate spacing between the center lugs and the raised side knobs. Those center lugs are also ramped to resist folding under braking and acceleration and the 3C Max Speed compound bridges the traction gap from packed to loose terrain.

Maxxis fashions the center knobs from a harder compound to resist wear and flex while the supple casing allows the tire to conform to irregularities in the trail and lets the softer side compound hook up and grip. As a result, you gain a positive traction over wet roots and rocks and seamless transitions from straightaways into turns.

Weak Sidewall

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love the Ikon. It is fast. It is supple. And it handles predictably in corners over a wide range of terrain. I've used ones with EXO sidewall protection and they have also proven to be durable. I decided to get race tire without the extra material (with the hope of squeezing out a little bit more speed). But in the end it proved to be futile since the sidewalls were torn on my last ride before the race. I knew this was a possibility and the course was rough, dry, technical, and rocky. So just the wrong tire for the course. On a smoother and different kind of a trail they would be near perfect. In fact, I'm replacing it with an older Ikon with the EXO protection (which still has enough tread).

Skeptic to fanboy.

I got sick of paying Schwalbe's high prices for the Rocket Ron and picked up 2 of these tires for the same price as a single Ron. I knew the grip prolly wasn't going to be as good, man was I wrong. At 22lbs (29x2.20) it had grip for days over loose, hard, roots, rocks, etc... Any slide was minimal and controlled meaning you knew it was coming. It rolls smoother on gravel and pavement, I perceived it to be faster. It wasn't any slower. for sure. Tubeless setup was ez with a compressor and orange seal. See ya Ron.

So I had the same issue as others but maybe worse. My front tire took 3 different rounds of sealant with Cafe Latex finally doing the trick after almost a month and 6-8 rides. On the non-drive side there were literally hundreds of tiny holes where the sealant would leak and after 2-3 days it would be totally flat. Needless to say, huge bummer.

Outside of that, I use these on my HT and they got me what I wanted from a performance standpoint. Not a full XC tire but not a slow trail tread either. They seem durable so far. Not bad.

Fast rolling but won't hold air

These tires are light and fast rolling, but I've put in 3 cups of Stan's sealant and they still don't hold air. I put in 32 lbs before a ride and when I get back they are down to around 26. You can see sealant leaking out the sidewall too. The next day they are down below 20 lbs. I bought two tires, used one and am returning the other.

Very fast rolling tire. Light sidewall.
On the first ride or on delivery, a small hole was already in the sidewall.

Well that didn't last long, that sidewall hole blew and the tire is now useless after just a few mild early season ride. Maybe I got a bad tire, maybe its just not a great tire.

Oh dang. If you'd have gotten them from me, I could have swapped them out within 30 days. Thanks for the feedback and for contributing to our community, Drew.

Great Tire Fast

This is a really fast xc tire. I love them. I have used them for years. They side wall casing is good, but these will hook up in anything. I like how fast rolling they are over a hard packed surface. Not a mud tire but do relatively well if it gets a bit slick on some roots.

I have these on both our hard tails now. handling is great, they roll fast and you get a lot of mileage out of them. All ours are set up tubeless and have held up well and been really trouble free. They are fairly light, light enough to race, but usable every day.

Good stuff

Does what they're supposed to do, and does it quick. Ordered them Friday, received them Monday. Sealed the rim bed of my el cheapo Mavic Cross Rides with two passes of Gorilla Tape. Threw these on, sans sealant--aired up. Put two ounces in, let them sit and so far, literally the easiest tubeless operation I've ever seen. Basically lost 3 pounds off my bike and gained a half inch of suspension and God knows how much traction. If you need puffy plus sized pillows to ride on so be it, but I grew up on 1.95s At 2.2, these keep you honest, but they roll fast. I'm excited for the thaw.

Fast, Very Light

I love these tires. They're a very fast rolling tread pattern and the 3c compound helps them hook up well pressing in to corners. Some like more aggressive each their own, these are not appropriate for an all mountain machine or a trail bike that's ridden in much rockier/rootier stuff. Faster tread for faster conditions.
