All Terrane EXO/TR Tire

When you take your first look at the 'cross course you'll be racing on this weekend, you know that mixed weather conditions necessitate a tire capable of taking on a bit of everything. Rather than a skittish fast roller or mud-flinging bruiser, the best tire for the job is one that won't be intimidated by squish, but can turn around and snap to attention when you hit a dry berm. Fortunately, Maxxis' All Terrane EXO/TR Tire was made for these kinds of days.

Wrap your race hoops in the All Terrane and you'll be ready for variable conditions with a wide, open tread shedding mud quickly in soft spots, and a 120 TPI preventing you from getting bogged down. Tall, square knobs grab hold of the dirt when the course turns rutted and sloppy a few laps in, but their ramped positioning on the tire allows for quick acceleration when the dirt dries and you need to open it up heading into a flyover.

  • Choose this do-it-all for mixed, variable race conditions
  • 120 TPI lowers tire's rolling resistance
  • EXO protection guards against race-ending punctures
  • Ramped knobs accelerate quickly on smooth dirt
  • Open tread and tall knobs shed mud and provide traction

Not a fan for cx racing

I've put it through the wringer
Runs small

Donnelly PDX's were out of stock and love Maxxis mtb tires which are mounted on 3 of my bikes so took a chance with this Maxxis "All Terrane" which looked/sounded good on paper. Upon receipt I noticed the knobs are even taller than the photos, which wouldn't be such a bad thing, but even with low pressure (24 psi) or high they only measure 31mm in width (see photo). I mounted to wider carbon rims and DT Swiss aluminum with same results. Not even close to the 33mm advertised (or 34mm actual of the PDX on same rims) but at least you won't have to worry about the UCI calipers at the start. Did a few dry races then raced a super punchy, technical cx race course that included a sand pit. They hooked up nicely in the damp grass including climbs and blasted through the sand pit but I lacked confidence in the slick off cambers and single track that I normally excel in due to their narrowness. Even though they're 120tpi, they feel super stiff and not supple at all. Thus the 2 star review as although they may be durable and ok for some gravel or single track fun, they are not a great cx race tire which explains why you don't see even their sponsored pro's racing them or find many reviews. Into the scrap bin and await Donnelly's to arrive back in stock...

Looks Awesome on My Bike!

I threw these on my old commuter to replace some road tires and I love how they look. I also feel way more capable on my bike now and I think I'll be able to take this thing on dirt roads now for bikepacking trips. Great deal!

Good all-arounders

You can do it all with the All-Terranes! I've raced these, hit up long gravel rides, and even done some singletrack on these, and I'm always impressed. The EXO casing is fantastic, and if they last as long as the Ikons on my mountain bike, they'll be perfect!

All Terranes are all good

I've put it through the wringer

Great tire. I've got them mounted on 23mm internal width hookless carbon wheels and they plump up a little wider than 33, which is nice. While not as fast on the grass as my old MXPs and not as good at clearing out mud as my Mud Wrestlers, they do everything quite well. They have been much less susceptible to punctures or burping than my other tires; in fact, I've yet to burp or flat despite lots of hard CX racing at low pressure and riding technical, rocky trails. As you might imagine, they are VERY good on dirt courses and super grippy under braking. I'll stick with these for everything but the Crusher where I'll run the less aggressive, faster rolling Rambler.

Great tires

I've used it several times

Mounted these to a set of Hed Belgium Blacks and they mounted up relatively pain free. They have clung to these rims burp-free for three CX races so far. I'm not a small folk either at 6'-3", 200lbs. They have great grip in loose and dusty terrain as well as grass. I have yet to test in muddy conditions. Overall these tires are like mini Ardents for your cross/ gravel bike.
