Aggressor Double Down/TR Tire

Compared to its EXO sibling, the Maxxis Aggressor Double Down/TR 29in Tire hits the dirt with a beefier casing to confidently weather all manner of fast, rowdy trail. The key difference between the two is in the casing and overall weight. Maxxis' Double Down dual-ply casing construction provides slightly heavier, downhill-inspired protection than EXO and boasts a TPI of 120 compared to the EXO's 60. While this does add a bit of weight, clocking in at just over 1000 grams, Double Down makes up for that with increased durability to weather the miles.

The knobby tread design features hard edges and reinforced side knobs to grip through loose, unpredictable stretches of trail and keep you from washing out on tight corners. Take the Aggressors on smooth hardpack and they'll do just fine, but you'll really see them shine on the loosest, least consistent sections of trail.

mounting issues

This DD version of the Aggressor tire has been the most difficult to mount and I have mounted many tires over 35 years of riding. These tires are compatible with my Bontrager rims but are hard to mount due to the rim tape. Anyway, after hours of wrestling I got them on the rim only to have them peel off after 6 miles of riding. Fortunately I did`t wreck or damage my carbon rims. The bead must have been slightly damaged during install. Trying to mount them again they would simply pop off the rim during inflation. Now I have a new tire that I cannot use on my Trek Fuel EX and is likely unusable on other rims.

This is my go to tire for places like Zion or Moab, UT or anywhere with lots of rock. The tire performs outstanding in all conditions, but I do find the DHR has a slight edge in grip when you start encountering dirt. I’ve never punctured (knock on wood) using this tire in the DD protection. It’s a little heavier but I do not notice it after two seasons. After ~750 miles the tire seems fairly worn, but still has some life left. None of the side knobs have ripped off yet but are all peeling. The center tread has become much more subdued. I do find these last me 10-15% longer than a DHR in the rear.

After riding this rubber for a little while i do wish at times it had a little more grip but to be honest it makes up for it with rolling speed. the smile you get from opening it up is well worth a few drifty corners

Want a great rear tire with grip without too much rolling resistance? Look no further than the Aggressor. The knobby design cuts into dirt and allows you to corner without fearing a washout. Additionally, the double down casing will protect the wheel from those rocky trails especially if this is your rear tire. It is a slightly heavier tire but the protection is worth it for an enduro or trail bike. I’d recommend this tire for the rear wheel on any enduro or trail bike that is on loose or rocky trails.

As Garson had mentioned, this tire is fantastic and my go-to tire as well. Good grip without feeling overly sluggish, DD sidewall is supportive and offers way more puncture protection over a standard casing, additional weight is minimal for the abuse the tire can take, and lastly it's quite predictable. I prefer the 2.3 over the 2.5 since I think it rolls a bit better, the 2.5in is only 80g heavier than the 2.3 though.

Great rear tire for the trails I've been riding in Utah all summer. Only downside is the weight. This thing is burly and you pay the price!

This is my go-to rear tire. The tread pattern rolls fairly fast and offers plenty of braking traction. As you lean over, the tire transitions smoothly to the side knobs, which bite hard and slide predictably. The rubber compound strikes a nice balance of being grippy without wearing at an excessive rate. The Double Down casing is significantly more supportive than the EXO casing, and it's far more tear and puncture-resistant as well. Well worth the weight penalty, ATMO.

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

After a frustrating weekend in Moab with multiple flats following my faster buddies, I pulled the trigger on these and haven't looked back. Sure there is a weigh penalty, but if you aren't confident in your tires, your won't ride fast. Plain and simple
