Pinnacle of alloy wheel performance.

No longer an obscure segment of the market, trail 29ers are the new norm and Mavic's XA Pro 29in Boost Wheelset aims to become your rolling stock of choice for all-mountain ripping, giving you many of the benefits of carbon wheels at a price that’s a lot more palatable. The rim's 25mm internal width adds volume to tires and Mavic recommends pairing them with rubber anywhere in the 1.8-2.5-inch range. More volume lets you run a lower PSI, which equates to more ground-hugging traction, a more comfortable ride, and less time on the side of the trail fixing flats. The rims are laced with de rigueur wide Boost hubs which improve the spoke's bracing angle and adds overall wheel rigidity to eliminate one of the biggest complaints of larger diameter wheels: lateral stiffness.

The rim is bestowed with classic Mavic technology allowing these hoops to be as light, stiff, and durable as we've come to expect from the French firm. Mavic is able to whittle away any unnecessary rim weight through a patented process known as ISM (Inter Spoke Milling) 4D. By reducing rotating mass at its furthest point, you get noticeably quicker accelerations and better handling. The strategic milling doesn't make any compromises to stiffness or durability and if anything, the wider rim and the improved spoke bracing angle afforded by Boost hubs makes this wheelset surprisingly responsive.

The other big revolution in mountain bike wheels lately, is the elimination of the bead hook. Mavic goes down this trail while still conforming to the original Universal Standard Tubeless (UST) tire bed design that it, with some help from its French pals, helped pioneer. UST first surfaced in the late '90s, when Mavic teamed up with Michelin and Hutchinson to create a standard that helped to spell the demise of the inner tube. It was ahead of its time, and tubeless didn't catch on overnight but it did help spark the inferno that now makes tubeless ubiquitous on almost all off-road bikes.

The hookless beads have a number of benefits. First is pretty obvious, you are reducing material so, weight. Secondly, eliminating the bead hook actually makes the tire more secure. Tubeless tires have stronger, non-stretching beads, and once installed, beaded up and on the tubeless bead shelves, the tire shouldn't burp or blow off the rim when running proper pressures. The ability for the tire to interface against a smooth rim wall improves the seal of an otherwise weak junction with a rim hook while also allowing for an easier installation. The removal of a bead hook bend also allows the rim to be much stronger radially. Helping improve the tubeless seal, the rim features Fore drilling where the lower rim wall is pushed to the inside of the rim cavity and threaded to receive the Zicral spokes and alloy nipples. This leaves the upper rim wall completely sealed.

It would be a shame to lace these wonderful rims up to just any old hub so they get the Mavic treatment there too. The ITS-4 freehub with two pairs of pawls is phased to create quicker engagement. This allows you to get on the gas with less lag between pedal input and forward motion. The difference this makes in technical riding and tricky climbs where you might have to ratchet the pedals to get over certain features is huge and once you are accustomed to quicker engagement, everything else feels decidedly sloppy. This particular wheelset is for 6-bolt rotor mounting only and comes in either an SRAM XD driver or Shimano HG freehub.
