For the committed.

The first real snow of winter has blanketed the trees and covered the roads, but that's just an easy excuse for the weak-legged, faint-of-heart, fair-weather riders to head for the garage. For the dedicated and well-equipped, the cold weather means empty roads and increased solitude — but it doesn't have to mean frostbite and suffering. Mavic's Ksyrium Pro Thermo Men's Jacket is a highly advanced technical piece for cold-weather riding, designed to take care of all the details so your torso rides happily even when your hands are going numb and your breath is freezing to your face.

Staying warm in the saddle is difficult, because climbs, descents, sprints, and moderate-tempo stretches all require varying amounts of exertion; basically, you're in danger of sweating and then freezing solid. Mavic got around this issue by designing the Ksyrium with a removable thermal inner shell, so you can alter your insulation for a given ride. The inner shell is made of PrimaLoft Sport, a lightweight and high-warmth softshell fleece, and features a Warm Shell Wind windproof membrane to ensure that cold gusts don't suck the heat out of your engine. The lining of the inner jacket, Warm Wick ST+, ensures that sweat doesn't build up, because clammy moisture will only make you that much colder when you start to descend.

On the outside, the Ksyrium is made with a combination of windproof and water-resistant nylon and polyester panels, which keep you warm in more moderate temperatures when you've removed the inner shell. A stretchy polyester insert ensures freedom of movement, while ergonomic seams follow the contours of your body to increase mobility and eliminate irritation. Zippered ClimaVent vents increase the jacket's breathability and cooling, while the locking asymmetrical zipper prevents chin irritation and lets you increase ventilation as needed.

Mavic engineered the Ksyrium Pro Thermo Jacket with plenty of additional features to keep you warm, comfortable, and organized in the saddle. The cuffs seal tightly against your wrists to lock out drafts, a soft zipper garage and collar lining protect your throat, and reflective highlights help keep you visible when it's getting dusky. There are two rear pockets for ride essentials, along with a zippered front pocket for key items and a routing port for easy headphone use.

Another killer Mavic product

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

Picked this jacket up mainly for road riding. Made the mistake of wearing the outer jacket on a 50 deg day with a compression shirt on underneath and just fried.
Wore it again this past weekend on the mtb, it was 28 deg and windy, wore the same compression shirt underneath and was toasty warm. Maybe almost too warm again!
Jacket fits great, love the extended back to keep the weather off your tail end. Great wind protection. I have a long torso and my biggest fear is always short arms and I have no problem with this jacket. The offset zipper makes it comfortable to wear all day. The vent zippers help a ton when you start to warm up a bit. The pockets on the back are great for keeping a snack or face mask on a road ride.
Definitely adding this to my list of top not Mavic products!

Excellent Jacket Cold Temps

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: L-US

I have used this jacket twice so far: yesterday while riding in 34ºF cold foggy weather and today while cycling in 38ºF+ partly cloudy weather.

I was completely toasty warm, and the jacket could easily handle even colder temps. I wore an Icebreaker compass hoody underneath the 2 layer jacket, and if the temps were lower, I could layer a 260 weight to add even more warmth, but I don't know that you would need it. The jacket is excellent because all you need is a base layer, and you are good.

And when you get too warm, the chest vents do an excellent job of venting while climbing.

I would have preferred an all red, and the orange is a bit odd, but very visible—especially in a season where visibility might be compromised.

This jacket is definitely for wearing under 40º, and you might be able to get away with wearing just the outer layer and a base layer for very low 40's.

I also own a Castelli Espresso 3 jacket, but I much preferred the extra warmth of this jacket these past two days.

I have a L US / XL Euro and am - 5'10" 180, and it fits with plenty of room for more layering. It definitely does not fit anywhere as tight as Castelli.

I tend run cold, so if you run warm, you could use it in even lower temps or forego the liner.

Thanks for the review Tyler! Super helpful to get this feedback out to the community.

I like it a lot.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have used this jacket several times in the early morning in crisp, low 30's weather. Even without the inner layer it kept me toasty. (I heat up pretty quick.) The off center zip at the neck works well. (I like it.) The extra front zip pocket is a nice feature. I have also used it on late night runs in similar cold temps.
