Crossmax Cycling Shoe

It can be tough to choose between getting new gear and financing biking trips to new places. Realizing this, Mavic created the Men's Crossmax Shoe, so you can stop making excuses and finally upgrade your old kick for a fresh pair, without canceling your summer riding adventures. Its affordable price point leaves money in your pocket for overhauling your trail rig or road tripping to pristine dirt, but without sacrificing much in terms of overall comfort or pedaling efficiency.

The Crossmax is an XC-specific shoe that's fast enough for entering a race or two throughout the season, but it mostly prefers the blissful feeling of pushing along singletrack at your own pace. Mavic's quick-lacing tightens the shoe with a quick pull, maintaining security without pressure points or excess slop. The Energy Grip Terra sole maintains pedaling efficiency on longer rides and faster efforts, but without being overly aggressive like race-specific carbon soles. Large traction lugs employ Contagrip rubber for plentiful grip when you're carrying your bike over menacing trail obstacles.

  • Comfort and efficiency without emptying your wallet
  • Quick-lacing system tightens with a quick, simple pull
  • OrthoLite footbed cushions feet and absorbs vibrations
  • Energy Grip Terra sole balances efficiency with comfort
  • Contagrip rubber lugs maintain grip over trail surfaces

A great pair of Coffee shop shoes

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 10's

True to fit, even with my larger feet. Great for those Morning tour Bakery shop rides using spds so that you can walk.

Unanswered Question

Do these come with cleats? If not, would Crank Brothers Premium bike cleats (2-hole) work? I have Crank Brothers Candy 1 pedals.

Like, but those darn laces

  • Fit: True to size

I like the size, fit, and function of these shoes on the bike. But the lacing system isn't great. The original laces broke after a few rides, and finding decent replacements is difficult. I haven't found anything that doesn't break rather quickly.

Quicklace kinda sucks for cycling

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Everything else about these shoes punches above it's price. Fit is perfect, comfortable, and durable. But the quicklace ruins it. It's impossible to get how tight it is just right. To make sure your foot isn't sliding around during high watt efforts they have to be very tight. But then they'll be too tight and make your feet numb. They stretch slightly as you ride too. One day when you go to put them on and the lace will break, how neat is that! They're replaceable but I've only done 1,000 miles on them and that doesn't seem like a lot for it to break. I'll be moving to a shoe with BOA since that solves every problem this shoe has. My final verdict, if you're decently serious about riding I'd probably just skip these and get something better. If not then these shoes will probably be fine for you.

Decent shoes for the Moolah

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have owned two pairs of Mavic cycling shoes with nothing but great experiences. They aren't the lightest or the stiffest but they are tough and are comfortable on my feet. When it was time to find some shoes for my new gravel bike I decided to give these a shot. I was a little hesitant of the lace system at first but so far it works great.

UPDATE: The laces failed after a few months of heavy use. Will stick with boa or ratchet system in the future.

Mavic Crossmax Shoes

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 9 US

The shoes bit true to size and were nice and comfortable with the draw-string lace design. Extremely easy to adjust how tight the shoe is definitely is a plus. And the fighter-jet style look is rad!
