The ride afforded by the aerodynamic advantages and stiffness of deep carbon rims is addictive. It isn't without its drawbacks though. Sketchy braking, especially in the rain, and the potential for heat failure typically have us reserving the wheels for race day use only. With the increasing popularity of disc brakes for road bikes though, the biggest gripes of carbon wheels and safety are addressed and Mavic's Cosmic Pro Carbon Disc Clincher Wheelset is proving to be a do-it-all wheelset for racing and training. It's aerodynamic, 45mm carbon/aluminum hybrid rim and the powerful and controllable braking that comes from a dedicated braking surface will have you motoring in the valleys and confidently descending the valley roads to get there. The increased durability will let you train on the same wheels you plan to race, so you can go fast on days when you pin on a number or the Tuesday night club ride.

The wheels' alloy hoops are extruded from the same Maxtal alloy found on its premium aluminum rim wheelsets. This alloy is unique to Mavic and is renowned for its strength and lightweight. Compared to standard 6106 aluminum, Maxtal comes in lighter with a claimed 30% increase in fatigue resistance. Joining the aluminum hoop together is Mavic's Soude Usine Process. This arc welded joint is stronger than typical rim joining for maximum reliability. The rim is milled according to Mavic's signature ISM pattern which involves machining the lower bridge of the rim between each spoke to further reduce weight without compromising structural integrity. These features allow the Cosmic Pro Carbon Disc to handle the daily abuse from training without flinching.

The heart of these wheels are the hubs and the Instant Drive 360 freehub is super-fast engaging and its large contact-less seal provides super low drag, while the double-sealed, QRM+ bearings are easily adjustable with an Allen key and Mavic's proprietary wrench. The rims are laced to the hubs courtesy of 24 straight pull, bladed, double butted steel spokes. The rear wheel gets Isopulse lacing with radial laced spokes on the drive side that better balances spoke tensions and improves power transfer. The included Yksion Pro tires are just as performance-driven as the wheels and the supple 127tpi casing improves the ride and decreases rolling resistance, while the KEVLAR and nylon reinforcements increase puncture protection.
