Setting at a generous 64mm deep, Mavic's Comete Pro Carbon SL UST Wheel is the ideal riding partner when speed is on the agenda, be it during a race or training. You'll likely see this wheelset under the pro's at AG2R-La Mondiale on the flatter, faster races, albeit in tubular guise, but for the rest of us not lucky enough to have a team car following us, the tubeless version is an ideal option when since, more often than not, we aren't pinning on a race number. Even with its aero profile, these are some of the lightest wheelsets in its depth category, at 1635 grams, and the whooshing sound of speed is so addictive, you'll be inspired to grab gears and string out the pack. The Cometes are Mavic's most aerodynamic wheels and the carbon rim offers exceptional stiffness and a lightweight build paired with the impressive rolling efficiency of road tubeless and exceptional braking when you have to scrub off all that speed on tap.

As part of the latest generation of wheelsets in Mavic's lineup, it incorporates the newest rim technologies giving you an absolute aerodynamic advantage on your ride in almost every conceivable situation. The rim is constructed of 3k carbon fiber to a new NACA profile rim that’s 64mm deep and 26mm wide, a perfect pairing with today's modern, wider tires. Mavic spent an extensive amount of time testing the profile in the wind-tunnel, honing its shape to provide ultra-low drag numbers while offering incredible stability in blustery conditions. The resulting shape is wide and rounded which helps with races against the clock, powering the breakaway, or sprinting for the finish of the biggest crit of your season, all without feeling sketchy in crosswinds, letting you save energy from fighting the bike and confidence from not getting blown around.

When it comes time to slow down, you'll appreciate Mavic's iTgMax carbon rim technology. It utilizes a laser to remove the first layer of resin on the brake track so the pads are able to get a better bite and create more friction providing power and modulation that has yet been appreciated on full carbon rims. This process helps improve braking on a big mountain descent and it doesn't matter if your climate is in the midst of a drought or you happen to get caught in a surprise shower.

Perhaps the most impressive piece of technology on the Comete comes from Mavic's all-new UST Road Tubeless setup. Mavic claims an improvement in rolling efficiency of up to 15% when compared to non-tubeless tires at equal air pressure. Of course, we're familiar enough with road tubeless that we've come to expect the reduction of flats and the improved ride quality that comes with running lower air pressure for more confident cornering and improved traction. What we aren't so familiar with is the simplicity of this tubeless setup. Mavic engineered super tight tolerances between the rim and tire so it's easy to install by hand, the beads pop into place with your typical floor pump, and it reliably holds air. The wheels come with Mavic's Yksion Pro UST tires that are partly responsible for the easy setup and fast rolling while remaining grippy and puncture free.

Finally, the hubs are worth a mention with the Instant Drive 360 freehub providing a quick 9-degree engagement letting you quickly respond to attacks with nary a lag in forward momentum. The QRM bearings are double sealed to keep contaminants out so the hubs remain smooth spinning season after season. Spoke duties are handled by steel spokes attached to alloy nipples with radial lacing up front and Isopulse lacing on the rear, meaning radially laced spokes on the drive side with a 2x on the non-drive helping to balance spoke tension and improve stiffness on fast sprints and big gear climbs.

Awesome Deep Section Wheels

    Mavic's entire lineup of road UST wheels have been great and this wheel is no exception. The ID360 hubs are Mavic's clone of DT Swiss' legendary Star Ratchet system, so you'll get no complaints there. They weigh in at around 1630 grams, which is pretty respectable for a 64mm deep wheelset. Once these wheels get spun up, they keep spinning along really nicely. Obviously you're going to get some control issues in bad crosswinds as you would with any deep section wheelset, but these felt a lot closer to some other close competitors from Zipp or Enve rather than something like an older v-profiled Reynolds DV66. Lastly, Mavic ships these with tubeless tires already mounted. Just pour the sealant in the valve stem, pump up the tires with your floor pump, and you should be good to go. Air your tires way down from what you normally do without the danger of a pinch flat (i run at about 75 psi on mine). If you're looking for a great set of TT, triathlon, or crit wheels, or live in a pretty flat area and dont mind the occasional crosswind tugging on your steering, you should give these wheels a shot
