While researching bike components, we often obsess about minimizing friction to go faster. Friction, while riding at least, can be quantified as drag from the resistance of cutting through the air or rolling resistance, mostly from the tire rolling on pavement but also from hub bearing drag. As much as we think of friction as the enemy, it is necessary for some instances such as braking and traction. Mavic's Tubeless Comete Pro Carbon SL UST Disc Wheelset aims to minimize friction in the areas that will let you go faster while maximizing it when you need it most. Paring Mavic's most aerodynamic carbon rim with the incredible rolling efficiency of road tubeless and the power of disc brakes creates an excellent all-around wheelset that will make you a faster rider.

The Comete Pro Disc is one of Mavic's latest road wheelsets, and as such, it features its latest rim technologies providing an aerodynamic advantage on your ride. The rim is constructed using 3k carbon fiber to a new NACA rim profile that’s 64mm deep and 26mm wide, which pairs perfectly with the included 25mm Yksion Pro UST 25mm tires. Mavic refined this airfoil shape after countless hours testing it in the wind-tunnel to produce the lowest drag possible while still offering stability in windy conditions. This wide, rounded shape has been used under Mavic sponsored riders to great success in time trials, fast flatter stages under sprinters, and triathletes. The importance of stability in crosswinds can't be stressed enough as it provides confident handling letting you stay in an aero position longer, be it in the drops or aero extensions.

We think it's time to recognize that there's no reason not to acknowledge disc brakes as here to stay for road cycling. Pro's are winning races on them and we'd be hard-pressed not to opt for a disc brake road bike if we were in the market for a new bike. When it's time to slow down, the power and modulation of a dedicated braking surface can't be matched by any rim brake, no matter the brake track treatment or pad compound. Factor any wet weather into the equation and the divide grows even more. This wheelset comes with hubs featuring the centerlock standard which works with centerlock rotors of course, or 6-bolt rotors with adapters.

We've spoken about how much Mavic's UST Road Tubeless technology has been a revelation for us. By removing the friction of an inner tube, it claims an improvement in rolling efficiency of up to 15% when compared to non-tubeless tires at the same air pressure. Road tubeless is kinda like road disc, plenty of cynics claiming it’s a solution for a problem that never existed, but we've enjoyed the improved ride quality that comes with running lower air pressures allowing more confident cornering and improved traction, not to mention a reduction in flats. The ease of the tubeless setup with this particular wheelset/tire combo takes it over the top though. Mavic engineered super tight tolerances between the rim and tire so it's easy to install by hand, beads up with your typical floor pump, and reliably holds air. No longer is installing tires frustrating, and it also gives us the confidence that, in the rare instance, we could install a tube if we were on the side of the road. The wheels come with Mavic's Yksion Pro UST tires that are partly responsible for the easy setup and roll fast while remaining grippy and puncture free.

Finally, the Instant Drive 360 freehub helps with quick accelerations via its 9-degree engagement system. The QRM bearings are double sealed to keep contaminants out allowing the hubs to keep spinning freely season after season. 24 straight pull, aero, double butted steel spokes are laced front and rear with Mavic's Isopulse pattern or radially laced spokes on the drive side with a 2x on the non-drive helping to balance spoke tensions and improve stiffness for a responsive, race-ready wheelset. The front hub is convertible between 12 and 15mm thru-axles and quick-release and the rear between 12 x 142mm thru-axle or quick-release.
