In the search for reliable, versatile, disc-compatible wheels that won't break the bank, look no further than the Mavic Aksium Disc Clincher Wheelset. With a wide rim designed to work well with tires ranging from 25 to 32mm, this wheelset transitions from road to gravel and even a cyclocross course or two with ease. While the Aksium Disc wheelset isn't as light as some costlier counterparts, its outstanding durability helps to compensate for the extra grams, recommending it as the working cyclist's workhorse hoopset.
As one of Mavics most wallet-friendly offerings, the Aksium Disc wheelset is substantially less expensive than Mavic's Ksyrium wheel line. That's because rather than having the Ksyrium's FORE drilled rims and thread-in spoke grommets, the Aksium is a more traditional, single-eyelet model with the spoke holes penetrating the outer wall of the rim, so it requires rim tape, which adds a bit of weight. It also isn't as heavily milled as the Ksyrium, which adds a little more weight, but it's just as reliable.
The Aksium Disc wheels feature 24 (front and rear) round, straight-pull, steel spokes for increased strength compared to the 20-spoke, rim-brake Aksiums. The higher spoke count helps counter the rotational forces of disc braking, and it also recommends them for more abusive pursuits on gravel.
