Step two.

The first two steps for a successful winter campaign are 1) you gotta wanna, and 2) you've got to equip yourself to be able to. Step one is up to you, but Louis Garneau provides some step-two help with its LT Enerblock Women's Jacket. The latest LT Enerblock is similar to previous iterations, so it's got the all-weather chops that winter warriors need to maintain and build form, but with some material updates that make it even more cycling-friendly.

As with its predecessors, the LT Enerblock's defining element is the material for which it's named. Like the Enerblock material it replaces, LT Enerblock creates a warm, dry microclimate with a windproof, waterproof membrane that keeps body heat in while keeping the elements at bay. LT Enerblock is also breathable, so it still lets water vapor out when perspiration rates rise with exertion levels, and the LT prefix suggests some increased stretch compared to the previous material. Reaching for a bottle in winter cycling gloves is arduous enough without an impeding fit, and LT Enerblock's inclusion of a bit more mechanical stretch shines most prominently in the shoulders when you're grabbing a bidon or draped over the bars.

Of course, anyone who's spent time in cold-weather kit knows that this kind of elemental resistance does come at the price of some breathability, so LG supplements the LT Enerblock with some strategically arranged panels of HeatMaxx, the Canadian brand's all-purpose thermal fabric. HeatMaxx's brushed inner face creates a bit of insulating loft, and it's lack of a membrane means it also breathes and manages excess heat more effectively than LT Enerblock. The HeatMaxx panels are placed at the elbow joints, underarms, and across the back, which ensure they perform their insulating, breathing duties without compromising the chest, shoulders', and forearms', weather-resistant properties.

The LT Enerblock Jacket is cut to accommodate layering, so its utility extends well into the low 30s or even high 20s, depending on your cold tolerance. The standard complement of three rear pockets is supplemented with a fourth, zippered pocket, and silicone hem grip and reflective details constitute finishing touches that help maintain coverage and visibility in the kind of chilly, low-light conditions where both are at a premium.
