Power ballads alone are insufficient.

While we'd prefer to do all of our cycling in 70-degree weather under fair, well-lit skies, life often insists otherwise. This is especially true when commuting—be it to work in the pre-dawn blue or home after dark from a late night of karaoke. Since it's as bright as most car headlights, Light & Motion's Urban 1000 Fast Charge headlight is built specifically for those scenarios. And it's built to reward impulsiveness, too. Its fast charge technology lets it juice-up in about half the time of a normal charge, so even if you don't find out about karaoke night until the night of, you'll still be able to ride with full illumination.

During late returns while you're still singing power ballads in the saddle, the light's 1,000 lumens are potent enough to illuminate dark roads. During the day, a pulsing mode reverses the dynamic by drawing the attention of motorists and other road users to you rather than revealing the path ahead.

Softer amber side lights extend the light's attention-grabbing to the sides, which is a nice feature while navigating city streets during the lunch hour but really earns its keep by establishing more of a presence at night. The forward-facing light is so bright that the Urban 1000 may come off as a disembodied, floating orb after sundown; the addition of amber side lights helps re-establish the position of your body in the eyes (and minds) of motorists. When it comes to safely cycling in low-light conditions, awareness like that can make all the difference, and you can't rely solely on your hair-metal falsetto to do the trick. Well, not always.

  • A high-power cycling light for early departures and late returns
  • Max output of 1,000 lumens rivals most car headlights
  • Main beam targeted to illuminate the road, not blind others
  • Day time running mode with attention-grabbing pulse
  • Fast charge USB connection cuts down time in half
  • Waterproof for days you'd rather not ride but have no choice
  • Quick-release mount attaches to handlebars and accommodates POV cams

Good, until it wouldn't hold charge

I've put it through the wringer

I used this light as one of many during the 2019 RAAM. We charged and rotated through several lights over 8 hour stretches. It worked great throughout the race. But over the next several months, I noticed it holding less and less of a charge until it wouldn't hold any at all. I contacted Light & Motion, explained the nature of the problem, and they honored their warranty with a replacement light. Kudos to them for that. Just wish the light would have functioned properly over a longer period of time.

    Great Light

I've put it through the wringer

For five years I used a Light & Motion Urban 800 every day for daytime and nighttime riding. I put in about two hours of riding every day, so this light lasted a long time. It still works great, but the battery finally got to the point that it drained too fast to last a full nighttime ride. I now use it as a backup. So I purchased the Urban 1000, and my experience is similar to RY S's review. The light is fantastic, brighter and whiter than the Urban 800, and the battery lasts long. It charges fast, mounts and dismounts quickly on any bike (I use it on four bikes on handlebars and aero bars) and it adjusts easily up and down, and side-to-side while riding. The only downside is the cover on the charging port. It is hard plastic instead of rubber, and locks out water. But it's a killer to open it. I have to keep a knife handy to open it to charge the light because I'd lose my fingernail before I could pry it loose. Except for this small issue, it's a great light, and I recommend it.

    Good, but not without issues

I've put it through the wringer

I purchased this light based on my previous experience with an older Light and Motion Urban 800 FC. That light has been across the country 3 times. I use it as a backup light because my main light is a dynamo powered light. Here's the good and the bad with the new light. Good -Waterproof. The first thing I did after charging up the light was to fully submerge it in a bowl of water while turned on. I left it in there for 30 minutes. The light was fine. -Bright, white light. This is noticeably brighter than the outgoing 800 light. It is noticeably whiter light too. Not nearly as yellow looking. -East to mount. Urban Light and Motion has a winner with their light mounting strap. The rubber is bombproof, easy to use, and adjustable. It's never failed me. -Fast charge time. You pay extra for the fast charge and it is worth it. -Great customer service, see below. The Bad -Flimsy charge port cover. They changed the charge port cover and mine snapped over the course of 3 charges. After discussing the issue with a customer service representative I was able to have an older cover mailed to me for free. They stated they had to change the charge port cover to work with their new quick release mount system. They didn't do themselves any favors by making the charge port cover flimsy. -Battery life indicator is iffy when it's cold. It doesn't like the cold weather. Basically any temperature under 32 degrees. They will work, but the battery light indicator will turn red almost immediately. This leaves you wondering how much battery you have left, and will you make it home safely. It will do this even with a fully charged battery. I ride year round and have experienced this several times. I always have a back up light for this reason. -Cost extra for fast charge option. In my opinion they should make all of their lights a fast charge. Why not make the best product possible? If they could fix those issues this would be a 5 star product. Their customer service is 5 stars.
