Supercharged GPS.

Lezyne continues to refine their line of GPS cycling computers with feedback from professional athletes and everyday riders. On the latest version of the Super GPS Special Edition, Lezyne rolls out new firmware and revamps other features allowing the Super GPS to live up to its name. Mounted on the X-Lock mount, the Super GPS is ready to record your every movement, help you stay connected, and provide navigation. You can now program up to eight fields on one screen across five pages. And with all of that data available, it's nice that Lezyne enhances the interface by fine tuning the number fonts to be more clear and using internationally recognizable icons instead of text.

Like its predecessor, the new Super GPS still backs up the usual GPS/Glonass connection with some local readings from a built-in accelerometer and a barometer. It's worth noting that it also still connects with ANT+ meters and monitors, too. This effectively compiles all the ride, power, and biometric data you need in one, tidy package at the head of your cockpit.

Lezyne's Ally app allows syncing the Super GPS with a smartphone via Ally. You're able to dial up pre-programmed routes or create your own. The Super GPS will then give turn-by-turn directions to keep you on track, letting you turn your brain off and just ride. If you're into just free roaming, then a bread crumb feature maps your ride out to guide you back. On the breadcrumb page, a new zoom feature allows users to zoom in or out on the current ride's breadcrumb trail.

On days when you've got the itch for competition, Lezyne Ally also lets the Super GPS display live segment updates. When paired with a smartphone, the only key difference between it and the (much) more expensive head units dominating the market is that it lacks a color touchscreen. If you're more into data and training than flash and shininess, that's a negligible sacrifice.

In addition to Strava, Lezyne Ally autosyncs with popular third party sites like TrainingPeaks. It can also provide text and call notifications—but we'd just as soon avoid that particular feature while we're out on the bike. After we've returned and sifted through all of those unanswered texts, Lezyne's GPS Root makes for one of the easiest data-dump processes in the industry: just head to the company's homepage, plug the Super GPS in, and transfer the ride with the click of a mouse.

The heart of the Super is still its GPS/Glonass connectivity, which is supplemented with the above-mentioned barometer and accelerometer. The addition of these local measurement tools reduces the dead spots and wonky readings that occasionally result when a handheld device is communicating on a sub-meter scale with a positioning satellite some 12,550 miles removed from your terrestrial hammerfest. By cleaning up the data, the Super GPS provides more accuracy. In a sport where centimeters often make the difference, that clean data matters. Providing a visual of GPS accuracy, Lezyne adds a new data field to the new Super GPS Special Edition that adds signal strength and remaining battery life.

The Super GPS Special Edition's construction is just as clean as its data. With a glossy, easy-to-read screen and signature meticulousness in machining the structural bits, this computer adds a touch of classy modern design to the cockpit. At 40.1 x 31.7mm, the screen is slightly larger than the previous Super GPS, making it that much easier to read at a glance or navigate data displays but still keeping it small enough that it doesn't overwhelm your bar space. The screen is also backlit for clear readability in varying light conditions, and the unit's four-button operation is intuitive and user-friendly for quick navigation on-the-go. The Super GPS Special Edition is available in a limited run colors red and blue.

Great data collection. Terrible map.

PROs - great with data collection
-battery can last over 400 miles of ride,
-can display 5 screens of data and up to 8 data fields per screen,
-has many data fields available for display,
    -both bluetooth and ant+ capable,
    -can collect power/heart rate/cadence/speed data ...,
-built-in clock, temperature, barometer, accelerometer sensors
    -can connect with Strava

CONs - very limited map functionality and no plan to improve
-Can't share map with other SuperGPS users. Every user is expected to create their own map
-Can't export a map created with (map function). It's land locked.
-Can't modify a map that was imported from Strava, Google, RideWithGPS, etc. Basically you will have to redraw it in Lezyne
-Can't even copy a map created with Lezyne to enhance into a new map. Again, you will have to redraw from scratch
-Limited to 23 waypoints only. YOu won't be able to create a complex map (like a century map) with more than 23 waypoints.
-Lezyne is not looking to improve. Their sales/support basically told me to use some OTHER apps to do all this. They did not even offer which app I will need to use to be compatible with Lezyne SuperGPS head unit turn-by-turn function
-Very crude map display on the head unit. You will need a smartphone to broadly see where you are

Thanks for this, I was excited about this product (the map on the fly seemed great). With the incompatiblity of the map functions, I cannot justify buying this.....hang on,I'm a cyclist, yeah I think I better find out for myself.
