Great pump terrible head

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

This pump is really great! It is very smooth and the wood grips are very comfortable to hold but they totally ruin it with the thread-on head. Not only is the head a pain to get on and off but something about mine also keeps the gauge from registering any pressure until you actually pump some air through it. Then if you try to use the bleed off valve it will let out a tiny amount of air and then stop working. Finally sometimes when you pull it off it will take your valve core with it. The head does come with a sort of tool built into to allow you to re-insert the core but then you have to re-pump up the tire starting at zero pressure. If you buy this pump plan on swaping out the head for something better.

Mine works flawlessly, and has for many years. I have had numerous pumps over the years, and this Lezyne is by far my favorite. Is it possible that you may be mistaking the intended function of the pressure-release valve on the head, Jesse? Mine is an older model, but I believe the function is the same--it is intended to release the pressure from the hose while NOT bleeding off pressure from the tire. It makes it easy to screw the head on and off the valve, and it would also explain why your gauge shows no pressure until you start pumping and the pressure in the hose equals the pressure in the tire. It may not be the design you would prefer, but it works well as intended.
